Well, it’s that time of year again… the Grammy nominations are in. Or out. Whatever.
Instead of your typical press conference, the Recording Academy announced the nominees at a music shindig last night, which aired on CBS. Among the performers were Mariah Carey, John Mayer and Foo Fighters. But enough about that.
Multiple nominees in the Gospel Category include Mary Mary (3), Kirk Franklin (2), and CeCe Winans (2). Click here to see the full list of nominees in gospel. Takes up too much space on my page.
I’ll blog about my actual predictions for winners later, but I must say, at first glance, that name recognition goes a long way in the Grammys, especially in the gospel categories… and, not that they don’t deserve to win this time around anyway, but anything Winans, Gaither or Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir-ish is generally ahead immediately out the starting gate. But, we shall see…
The 51st annual Grammy Awards telecast will be broadcast live on February 9, 2009.
Whatd’ya think???

Has Kirk Franklin ever won a Grammy before? I think the Grammy winners should represent as many facets of gospel music as possible. I kind of don't want the same people to keep winning. There are so many people who are gifted, that we don't have to keep giving the awards to the same ones. But, this is not necessarily a gospel contest, so how will people know about the different facets of gospel music when only certain people are really popular enough to be known outside of our smaller circle?
Kirk has won 5 Grammys-- Best Song ("Imagine Me"), Best Contemporary Soul/R&B Gospel Album (Hero, The Nu Nation Project, whatcha Lookin' 4) and Best Gospel Choir (God's Property). I hear you about the repeat winners. I think they all great artists, putting out great music, but it would be nice to know that a new artist has an equal chance of winning.
You forgot that Jason Champion received his first ever Grammy nomination for his gospel debut ;-)
HAHAHA!!! Indeed, I did, Chloe. Please forgive me. I'll do a post about it IMMEDIATELY. Check back in 10 minutes.
