Is It Just Me: L. Spenser Smith & Testament

Is it just me, or was L. Spenser Smith & Testament’s album, Statement, severely underrated and frustratingly overlooked?

Listen to one of my faves, “Surgery”:

FIRST! Gotta be honest on this one. Truly hope I don't break the house rules. The song "Surgery" was so hot to me----easily one of my favorite songs of the past 20 years in Gospel---that it drove me to the store with great urgency to purchase the CD....only to find out the full version of the song wasn't even on the album. In its place was a less-than-2-minute-interlude version that didn't even include ANY of the hottest parts of the song. I had to buy the full version on iTunes as a special edition track. An MP3-only version of a song with such great production value and so many subtle nuances??? I was so mad that I gave the CD away and never looked back. So....since that full track was the only one heavily spun on radio, I'm guessing quite a few people may have felt like me. Just a hunch...

Ahhh, you may be right about that. I think my copy came from iTunes, and it did include the full version. That kind of sucks. Whose decision would that have been anyway? But didn't if have some wonderful nuances? It was written flawlessly, though I will say, I do enjoy other tracks on the album.

I thought the CD was pretty good!

Actually, the song "Surgery" was never meant to be a song but an interlude. However, due to mass appeal and consumer request, it was expanded to the full-length version (available on iTunes) months after the cd was originally released.

I know for a fact that not too many people on the West Coast has ever heard of him. The cd wasn't in too many stores unless you special ordered it. But that's a recurring theme on the West Coast anyways. :-(
