On TV: 106 & Park Generation Gospel and Bobby Jones

Did y’all watch 106 & Park Presents: Generation Gospel yesterday?  It was pretty good, again.

Guest artists were Da’ T.R.U.T.H. and Kirk Franklin.  Both gave good performances that the audience REALLY loved, and both gave some great interviews.

Also pretty cool was seeing Cheryl “Salt” James (from Salt-N-Pepa) on the “Guess Who’s Back In Church” segment.  Her testimony was awesome and relevant for the youth, I think.

Still don’t like the concept of that youth choir, but they sounded a bit better this week.  I guess when you do it so much… “gen-er-a-shun gos-puuuuuuuhhhhhlllllll…..”

* * * * *

And, on Bobby Jones Gospel, I can’t really remember anything except that DORINDA CLARK-COLE did some gooooooood singing!  She did “Make Me Real” and “Take Me Back,” and she sang like nobody’s business on both of ‘em.

What did y’all think?

    My Bobby Jones highlight was watching Christopher Lewis tell senior citizens to say "Hey shorty, what it is??? LOL

    I missed it... but I wanted to ask "is there too much of the same thing -- the variety show concept -- in gospel now?" Is it possible to branch off into something else... game show, reality show, drama.. I dunno. Christian anything (tv/e/print media) IS thematic in that it should convey the message of Jesus, reveal life in the Kingdom, discuss its various industries and interests, and/or entertain people in whlesome ways, but... I dunno. Sister Rosario wants more and I do too. Feel me?

    WOW I thought I was the only one that felt that the youth generation choir has GOT TA GO!!! AWAY! Way AWAY! That poor harmony was working on my nerve for the first show and I only caught about 25 mins of this second show. As always Kirk has such an infectious spirit that he basiclly stole the spotlight from the two newbies. But let's remember that this show is for the youth (in response to Byron) I watch because I like it but I mainly watch so that I can get my kids intrigued to watch. Where I live there is scarce a trace of christian programming on so I am like a fiend when I see something new that is christian/gospel based being developed. Yeah I feel there is so much more that can be done too. It's funny though I have a friend who lives about 15 miles from me and they have access to numerous gospel channels through their cable provider. My choice for gospel is BET. How sad is that! Who can I protest to! Ooops I digress... anywho I look forward to see how they are going to play this show out. With the lack of good gospel videos out now i hope they don't run into a shortage of videos and be forced to pull out the L.B.V. (that's low budget videos) from unknowns. (sorry hope I don't sound too mean)

    LOL @luda. @Byron: I feel you. We need more diversity. I think Gospel Music Channel does a great job, but still a ways to go. @Highly Favored: You're HILARIOUS for that comment! I agree about the LBVs. LOL

    I love generation gospel but its missing something. Idk what it is but its missing something. The choir need2 go unless they start doin something. Like battles like they said earlier. Plus it needs more promotion.

    I think that they need to do a better job of showing ALL of gospel....last I checked, gospel didn't start off with this "21st Century" music. It's good that they're showing it to draw the unsaved and what not, but it wouldn't hurt for them to incorporate some good Sunday morning music or praise and worship videos.

    wait a minute ... generation gospel actually has a segment called "guess who's back in church?" really? that's like ... um invasive?

    @Fiddle: I agree. I think the choir needs to perform at each show. Something fresh or fun. But their purpose CANNOT simply be to take us out to commercial break and bring us back in with the SAME SONG. I'm done with that. @Brenden: I hear you, but they're trying to draw a crowd of youth that may not be into Sunday morning music. Though, I think they'd be surprised-- a lot of youth LOVE some good praise and worship! @Chloe: Yes, they do. It's rather encouraging, actually. Last time they showed that segment, they featured Lil' Mo and how she has returned. See? :mrgreen:

    I need a DVR so I can record this show :(...

    LOL. Wait, what's intrusive is the segment with Jermaine Sellers about what people coming into church have on. And I mean, literally, as they're walking into church, they are being asked why they made the choice they did. Also, what ever happened to the results of the first and only choir competition? I'm just saying, I need a little follow-through. Other than that, I enjoy the show. You're right, Kirk Franklin did steal the show and the choir needs to go. Jor el is a natural and Angel is warming up, I think. And, that's all for now. Work beckons....

    EJ: Yeah, I get that and I don't have a problem with that. But what happens after they draw the youth in? Are they just going to keep them in that box in terms of music? That sorta isolates people from the true personality of gospel...that's just how I feel. And I agree, I think they would be surprised at how many youth enjoy praise and worship, even traditional music.
