ChitChat: Damita Haddon

At the 106 & Gospel taping, I got to hang out with Damita Haddon.  She’s absolutely HILARIOUS and incredibly down-to-earth.

As we were talking in her dressing room, her background singers came in… one of ‘em is a childhood friend that I used to sing with in the Soul Children of Chicago over 13 years ago!  SMALL world!  Shout-out to Toni Stephens.  Great to see ya! :-)

Damita did a great interview (for the record, who you see on TV is who she is behind closed doors, which is great to see) and she did a great performance of her single, “No Looking Back,” from her recent solo album of the same name.  I encourage you ALL to check out that album cuz it is reeeeaaaally good and ridiculously underappreciated in the industry.  In particular, check out the title track, check out “Pray,” check out “I Won’t Complain” (you’ve never heard it so mellow and so right).

Actually, watch her video for “No Looking Back” here:

What do y’all think???

MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR shout-out to Jojo Pada of Ignition PR for, among other things, inviting me to kick it with y’all.  We had a gooooooood time, as always!

@nissi: First, I have to say that you cracked me UP with the phrase "carrying emotional baggage in shoes that are too tight." HAAAAAAAAAAAA! Second, I hear you and I think you gave some constructive criticism that was not intended to tear down. I soooo appreciate that on this site! I think a lot of folks take issue with some of the stuff that Damita wears-- like they do with other artists. I, personally, didn't pay attention to her apparel and I liked the execution of the video. I like the black-and-white feel, I liked that she's walking down an endless road. I think that videos in gospel are... a developing craft. There hasn't always been a budget for 'em, there haven't been a lot of 'em... people are still kinda learning. This video isn't my favorite in gospel (one of my faves is probably "You" from 21:03), but I think she gets an 'A' for the effort and I don't mind watchin' it. What do other folks think???

I think Nissi need to ease up off my spiritual mother!!!!!!!!!!!! Why are you focusing on her outfit anyway! There is nothing wrong with what she has on! I love my spiritual mom like I love my biological mom so excuse me for taking offense. But this is what Pastor Damita felt in her heart to do so who are you to judge. And at least she's not half naked like Beyonce,Rhianna, etc. She is a beautiful black woman with curves. She can't help that Nissi! So if you don't have anything nice to say....I love my spiritual mother and I appreciate her and I don't care what anyone says about her!

I absolutely love this song, I had the chance to see her perform it live, which was amazing! I loooove how she's walking through the whole video and how she literally doesn't look back lol, that's nice! At the same time, I just wish there was more focus on the concept between the song and video. But that happens often, where the videos are at times (particularly in gospel music) a little off balance from the song. And like EJ said above, there isn't always a budget (a good one) for some artists. The clothes personally didn't stick out to me much, I took a glance at them. BUT...some people DO pay attention to that, I mean that's the whole purpose of a music video: to give a VISUAL perception of the song. Some folks actually look for everything in a video to relate to each other, which in many ways it should. And I believe that's the point Nissi was making. Because the song talks about being free (moving on, letting go, etc.) some might have automatically looked for Damita walking down that road, maybe in a free flowing sundress, hair blowing in the wind, just a bit more carefree. And there's really nothing wrong with anyone looking for those things. It's not judging or attacking Damita's music, ministry, personality or what was laid in her heart to do, it's just the normal expectation that someone would have for a video (especially when you really love the song), not to tear Damita down in anyway. I think it's a good video for what she put together, and I do believe that she intended for it to be just that...good :) God Bless!
