It was a re-run.
But it was still as good as the first time I saw it! It featured performances from Fantasia, Melonie Daniels and Isaiah D. Thomas.
I already posted a clip a coupla months ago of Melonie’s awesome performance, and Isaiah D. Thomas did his thing well. But I wanna chat about Fantasia. MAN, OH MAN.
She AND her mama sang “He’s Done Enough” like it was going out of style. I mean, they brought it FOR REAL. Then, she came back at the end of the show to sing “Total Praise”– phenomenal.
After the credits rolled, she continued in the same vein of worship, talking to the audience about her recent vocal surgery and how she has a voice to sing despite the doctors’ predictions. She cried and sang some more, thanking God for who He is. Great stuff!
I think Fantasia’s a bit of an anomaly in the music industry. After Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, and maybe Whitney Houston, she’s probably the biggest-named artist who puts out “secular” albums, but can also be found doing tons of gospel stuff on the regular. Not only is she accepted in both markets, she’s believable in both genres.
I’m aware that I could be startin’ something, but I wanna know what y’all think about her. Holla!

I think Fantasia is genuine when she sings gospel. I wonder if she's more accepted in gospel because she was a part of American Idol. George Huff and Mandisa didn't seem to have trouble making the transition either. I don't know how Fantasia comes back and forth from one industry to the other, though. Maybe it's because with American Idol, we see an artist first as themselves, not the developed artist that is usually presented to us. So for that reason, maybe they have more options than artists who do it the old-fashioned way. I don't know. Any other ideas?
I'm wondering if Fantasia will go strictly gospel like Kelly Price and Coko has. Both of their cd projects are awesome!
I wish she would. It seems like her heart is in gospel. Did u see her on that Bobby Jones Gospel program? She sang like crazy.
Yes sir I did! I caught the end of the first song she did with her mom, but I saw her do her thang on "Total Praise"!
I know that I'm late posting on this topic, but I thoroughly enjoyed this episode of Bobby Jones (well, perhaps because I was on there doing background with Melonie Daniels-LOL). Anywho, Fantasia is amazing, and that tv taping was off the chain. It was even better to experience her in person. I would love for her to do a gospel project, but to be honest, the girl can sing anything, so I would support her no matter what (as long as her music doesn't get too ridiculous-LOL).
@Maritha: Never too late to post! :-) Welcome. You're right-- Fantasia can do anything and I'ma be happy, but I wish she'd just come on over to gospel where the folks really appreciate her. I think the support of her mainstream fans is starting to wane a bit.
