Word Has It: Jennifer Hudson To Record Gospel Album

Word has it that Jennifer Hudson is preparing to record a gospel album.  Several folks are citing MediaTakeOut.com as the source of this info– apparently someone at her label, J Records, has leaked that she’ll start recording this Spring.

Well, well, well… Can’t say I’m surprised.  I dunno if it’s a wise business move for her, cuz she’s at the top of her game in R&B and I don’t know if all of her fans will be feelin’ Jesus like that.

BUT, if she’s sincerely doing it to talk about Jesus (which I believe she very well may be, especially in light of the things she’s been going through lately), then whoo hoo!  Score one for the Kingdom!  That’s mega exposure and a powerful testimony.

Dont think its a good move... a Gospel album is the sign of a failed R&B career... This is too soon for her... Prediction... Mary Mary, Yolanda and Kierra will appear on the album... Oh Fantasia and George Huff also...

I agree. Jennifer hasnt really made her mark in R&B to start experimenting with her loves just yet. She should stay focused and crank out a HIT. But IF she just HAAAAS to do a gospel record, why does she have to have all those guests? 1. She needs to pay homage to ONE veteran... Tramaine would be nice since they're both sick sopranos. 2. If she's going to have a newer guest artist, she should dig deeper into the world of gospel than Mary Mary or KiKi. That's original! I know those are top-selling gospel acts, but depending on who produces the records, Mary Mary and KiKi fans are going to be buying it ANYWAY... Lastly... it needs to actually BE a gospel record. Not one of those Dave Hollister/Kelly Price/Smokey Robinson fake-me-out's. I didnt mean to cut up, I just don't want to waste ANOTHER dollar in this hour.

She has been sounding so amazing lately, that I would really be excited to hear her gospel album. I say let's do it!

I''m sittin here reading all the comments and I wasnt going to respond; I've been trying to lay low for a minute, but I personally feel that after the great ordeal that she just had to endure, maybe recording a gospel album could be just the thing she needs to do to help with the healing process; this could be her spiritul therapy. We dont know the mind of Christ and why He allows things to be. He could very well be using this to bring her closer to HIM if she isnt already. Only He knows where she stands with Him, not us! So I say go for it!

I hear all that's been said and tend to agree. And just to reiterate my initial point: if she's really doing this for Christ, then I say "Good Job" cuz I wanna hear it! But, like a few others said, if this a BUSINESS decision (because several R&B artists make the BUSINESS decision to leave R&B and sing Gospel), it's seems too early for that move in her music career. As an aside, I wanna note something else: she is a singer by vocation. If she's not paying attention to her career, than she's got one up on me, cuz I ALWAYS try to see areas for professional growth and improvement-- in whatever I do, I'm trying to do it for the glory of God. Further, God never called us AWAY from our careers. Paul, in the midst of an evangelical outreach in the Book of Acts, returned to being a tent-maker (Acts 18) cuz the reality of our situation is that we gotta work. And work isn't always full-time ministry-- sometimes, work is being a doctor, lawyer, teacher... And Christians are called to find ways to BE ministers in the MIDST of "secular" occupations. For some reason, Christians feel that "music" is the ONE occupation that can never be secular, though there is not Biblical support for it. In any event, YAY JENNIFER! Do your thang, secular or gospel, cuz you know I'ma support it either way. *gettin' my $9.99 ready for iTunes* What do y'all think?

OK. J Hud HAS been in rare vocal form lately, so the notion of a project in our arena is interesting to me. What scares me is the thought of an album that is not authentic or consistent creatively with where Gospel is at the moment. Anyone remember Ruben Studdard's foray into Gospel after his first album? Insiders know that Clive Davis and his team reached out to SONY BMG'S in-house Gospel experts (aka Verity) for advice about the project and then blatantly ignored every piece of that advice. The result was a disappointing project. The production wasn't reflective of what was gonna on in Gospel at the time and they broke the cardinal rule: DO NOT do a classic, well-loved cover (re-recording of a song) if you can't take it to another level. So, if Miss Jennifer is moved by her recent experiences to bring her faith to her audience, that’s great. Just take a moment to make a REAL Gospel project rather than a mainstream interpretation of Gospel. Just my thoughts...
