Kim Burrell hasn’t released a commercial album since March of 2001. In my opinion, ’nuff said! Still, for those of you who need MORE reason to purchase this album, here’s my review.
Her new project, No Ways Tired, is actually a bunch of covers of classic songs. If other artists tried it, I’d prolly hit the snooze button and get back to it later. BUT, Kim Burrell can sing a phone bill and make a brutha wanna pay it on time, so I’m not mad!
In my opinion, THIS is where Kim Burrell really shines. She is an incredible vocalist, she’s bananas on the keys… but I think that she’s also a phenomenal ARRANGER. And, to that end, she’s absolutely showin’ off on this project.
If you recall, I went to her Christmas concert in New York back in December (click here to read my recap) and I talked about her phenomenal arrangements of Christmas classics. Then, when I interviewed background vocalist Jerard Woods, he talked about how they just gathered around her piano and she came up with these amazing arrangements (click here for that interview) for her Live In Concert album.
No Ways Tired opens with an authentically jazzy prelude in which she scats to the instrumental break of Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke,” before moving effortlessly into “Happy,” the type of excitingly complex track that you’d expect from her. The title track is next and you hear her put a jazz/funk spin to a very traditional tune.
The stylistic influences continue to shift throughout the album, from the mellow ”I Surrender All,” which sounds like it was recorded at one of those really tiny jazz clubs in New York, to the guitar-driven “Jesus,” a simple enough song over which her vocals dance beautifully. At all times, though, the project is quintessentially “Kim Burrell.”
Now, is it THE Kim Burrell album we were all waiting for? Maybe not. I think everyone was expecting a studio album similar to Everlasting Life, where every singer– in gospel and beyond– would play it “over and over again,” memorizing every note. I don’t think that’s this album. But let’s be real, too: that album was probably one of the greatest albums in contemporary gospel music in the past twenty years.
That said, if you refer to the albums that you own as a “music collection,” I think No Ways Tired is a great addition to it. In my estimation, Kim Burrell is one of the most prolific musicians of our time and any music lover would be remiss in not copping what she puts out. Her creativity, tone, agility and ability are both unparalleled and inspiring, whether she’s singing a hymn, a jazzy joint or the churchiest drive out there.
In short: don’t play yourself cuz everyone will have this album and will have expected you to know what we mean when we say “use your happy!”
It’s available TOMORROW. Who’s gettin’ it???

I won't be getting this one...what happened to the other recording that was suppose to come out. She did a couple of singles from on TBN and they were incredible. Well I don't know what is going on and I do love KBurrell but again I am a little sad that this is the cd that will come out. I will wait....
I will be getting this one...Kim Burrell is one the greatest gospel singer on the planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will support Kim B. But I hope its better than some of her last projects. She is an awesome singer/musician, but for some reason, its' hard for me to follow her writing style...???? On the other hand, she can take a hymn or classic song and KILL it!! This will be interesting. I was told the reason she was without a contract for so long was that her previous CD's did not sell as anticipated. I wish her well (as I go buy the CD..lol)
I'm on it! I have to add this to my collection of gospel music. Her voice is smooth. She always does a really good job. She has one video on Youtube where she sings about coming to church on time and being so full of the spirit that she help others. It was like she was singing a prayer....absolutely beautiful. Again, thanks for the news. I have already added Israel Houghton to my ipod. I live in a rural area and I'm usually late getting stuff, but the site is helping me keep up:):)
I'm buying it cause it's Kim!! I had the priviledge of sitting in the studio in Kansas during one of the mixing session of "Everlasting Life" and I've been in love with her ministry ever since. I don't care what she sings...it rules...so i'm supportin as usual!
EJ, my friend...uummmmm I just don't know....don't get me wrong Kim is great and all but her albums and songs kinda disappoint....I would rather hear her sing other peoples songs...imma have to pray about this one...but she one of the baddest singers to ever live!! Well next to Karen that is lol
Lawd help @ this copy/paste job of an album cover....
Well I just purchashed my copy of the Cd.I can honestly say that this cd is no "everlasting life" but a person would be crazy to pass it up. I mean Kim has put her style on the classics and I cant argue. Although I will say it seems like she took a layed back approach in the run and scatt department within some of the tracks. There are not as many loops and acrobatic leaps in as well. Im not complaining but I am simoly happy that something is released. I think this cd is just for the moment since she has done other recordings. I do question the quality of the cd case and pictures. All in all its a good buy. I found my finger glued to the rewind button lol saying "did she just do that"? I have to hear it again lol. Its a nice cd.
No way tired, uh........I am not impressed with this album or the songs, especially for Kim to be gone for seven years without an album. She didn't stay in the studio long enough. I think I may wait.
kim better hold a fake mic on the album cover like she at home in the mirror pretending to be the praise leader at her church
I don't know who was behind the artistic design of the cd cover, but that person needs to be fired. It is very unappealing. Having said that, the clips I heard on Amazon from this cd sounded very nice. I'm planning on purchasing the cd. This is a surprising release, as I wasn't expecting an album of "covers", but, nevertheless, Kim Burrell is capable of spicing up the songs with flavorful rearrangements.
@kurtis: u just killed me. And LOL @ "fired" from mightymouth!
HAAAA!! These comments are hilarious. Holding a fake mic.. YIKES, and FIRED, I agree.
dead at dese comments!!! I have NOT seen a CD cover like that since going thru my dads album collection. Myrna Summers (1970's) is photoed with some clouds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they coulda done betta than that!!
and they used their cell phone to take da picture!!! smh!!! sad....
LOL @ Bill!!! Cell phone?!!! LOL
man, yall wildin' lol. Kim is great! I plan on getting it just because it's her. I'm a fan, a supporter...I heard the Christmas concert on Sirius satelite radio and recorded it..it was cool "be praised because it's Christmas"-my fav! lol but yeah, I'm adding 'No Ways Tired' to the collection...
ToryTerron let me get a copy of that Christmas thing man. Hit me up lol and yeah i got kim's cd and its off the hook with new runs and new song endings.
I echo deon, ToryTerron can we get that christmas jump off, i've heard of it, but never experienced it...
I gotz it! Love it!!
@ToryTerron: Welcome! How you gonna come on here TEASIN' folks... you sent me STRAIGHT back to December with that lyric! Duuuddde...
it got it today. just glad to have something from The Lady!!!
I am already ready for the next cd from Kim lol! I am glad about "No Ways Tired" but there needs to be a bonus cd or something. It's nice but it's not going to hold me. Im praying for another release soon lol. Where is "Have Faith In Me" or "That's What He's Done For Me"?Even tho this is a throw back it could have included more material. I would love to see her go back and do a part 2 to "Everlasting Life" that would be awesome.
ok, loyal Kim fans will obviously go out and cop this because quite frankly its KIM. I love me some Kim but Kim you gone have to "Try me again" I love Happy and the other remakes but something is just missing for me. This is definetly not a "taking a long trip somewhere and wanna jam to something" type of CD nevertheless this can hold some fans over until the next project. IMO I could just hear a compilation CD of all of Kim's guest appearances on other albums on 1 CD instead of this one. She murders song in person and on other ppl's songs but some of the material on her own albums is lacking. Ya'll dont kill me...its just my opinion!
I wish I wouldn't have purchased this album. I can understand this type of production coming from a Local Praise & Worship/Gospel group or what have you. Very mediocre production. Is she scared to sign with people like Verity or EMI Gospel? Well, whatever the case I think this album is worth half what I paid for it which is $4.50. I would just expect this from some local artist's debut album.
Let's not get into the "production" or "label" issues as we don't know the particulars. Too many varibles to consider. Production is important, however, great songs sung by great singers, played by great musicians is the basis of any great album. Furthermore, I have heard PLENTY of "indie" albums that blow off some of the "top dogs". I digress....What I heard did not grab me enough to compel someone into making a purchase on this one. The sub par album cover was only a prelude to what I was going to hear. In addition, after such a long wait I expected much more. I needed more. Maybe I was naive....It's a good (not great) addition to any die-hard KB fans but for gospel music enthusiasts such as myself, it's not one you MUST have.
LOL, Maybe I should have purchased Donnie McClurkin's instead. But then again the reviews....
I listened to the snippets on amazon and to be honest I wasn't impressed for this to be the awaited album. I am very torn because of my loyalty to Kim but my disapointment in the material sung. I think i will wait for someone else to purchase and listen to it in it's entirety to decide. $14.99 is a lot more valuable than just to throw away on another cd to collect dust nowadays. i need something to keep in the car at all times and this just doesn't seem like the one.
random, but I really loove the track Kim does with her sister Kathy.
This Cd is Amazing. Outstanding Job by Kim.. I bought 17 copies , This is a very inspirational Cd, and Kim's talent just shines so well on this cd. I just fell out and didnt wake back up until two days ago.. Im still just knocked out by the amzement of this album. This is a legend there is noone like Kim.., and there will never be a blessing like her. For those that said they are not going to buy it, that is yall lost. Kim burrell sing because of the lord gift. Negativity on brings yall blessing's down. God bless Kim and I hope she has so much success. She has my support to the fullest. You'll be a fool not to get this album
@Mike..we LOVE Kim..just not impressed with this production. Are you a record company executive or something?
Well, we all know about the cover which is horrable. I have been a kim burrell fan for a long time but to me this is the worst album I have ever heard from her. The Kim Burell live album was not good do to the band doing to much now this one sound rushed and the music sound elevator with a jazz element nothing new at all. Who know she might be hurting for money to put something like this out. Once a loved fan but now I will never buy another Kim Burrell Album do to this rushed recording. I'm waiting on the next best thing which is not kim. P.S. and to mike you have to be someone with the label to buy and try to sell and pump this cd up to us. Please be honest and tell the truth about this. You know she is better than this she has sold her self out on this cd and it hurts.
Im Not a executive but a new ARtist that will be dropping in the gospel Eye soon. Growing up listening to the brilliant Kim and getting trained by the brilliant clark sisters. Music has involved in the wrong direction and people has overlooked great talent for crap. I'm just tired of the best singers (in my opinion) and musicians not getting credit where it is due. Not many people can say i wrote the whole Cd, and all of the harmonies. Kim Burrell is a legend . Im sorry to not agree with yall but this album is true genius work. Maybe it is not as inspirational as her other's but this album shows her abilities, and shows her love for teh lordthat is what it is all about. Not her hair not her look but her gift that she is sharing with us and giving praises to the lord for what he has done for us. People has really gotten out of what the true gospel is supposed to be about. When you bring up how a person looks on her album cover that is ashame. (It is a [EDITED BY EJ FOR POTTYMOUTHEDNESS] shame when you buy albums because of the album covers) Im just laughing because I can go on all day. This has just really gotten to me because i have seen great singers fail because they weren't the norm.
Mike calm down I agree with Bill this is a nice cd but the production is way below par. Kim is still outstanding regardless and I have some favorites on it as well. I still don't think this cd will hold that long. And Mike if you gonna be in the gospel eye whatever that means you should mind your langauge. Im not your father but when you come out singing music people gonna be watching you. God bless.
The best advice I can give to you is to be ready for all types of criticism. You are NOT going to be able to rebut every opinion....NOR SHOULD YOU. Don't ever "come out of character" when you do offer whatever response. When we did 7th episode (ricky dillard) some liked it and some didn't. It comes with the territory. People expect more from Kim and as an artist you HAVE to deliver every time. She is not an INDIE artist but an ICON and quite honestly, her albums should at least reflect it. Just my humble opinion...again.
Alright now! Let's keep the site free of inappropriate language. We have all been blessed with better vocabulary for expressing our opinions about what the artists create. I agree that sometimes people do make negative comments about artists (knowing that they can not do half of what these talented individuals project if given a microphone); but this site is designed for all to give their thoughts. Let's just keep it clean! Profane babblings is not right. Let your speech be with grace. *Now back to the subject, personally I am honored to hear Kim Burrell. In fact I am glad SOMEBODY is still praising the lord in this economic mess with states steadily approving gay marriages. I am glad somebody is holding on and "NO WAYS TIRED!" If you still have a problem with this cover or album....consider the fact that some countries do not have freedom to worship as they are pleased. Yeah, I had to go there. Think about that everytime you go to purchase a gospel cd or download music. WE ARE BLESSED AND FREE.
Mike you are so right. Im sorry I cannot agree with these other peoples. Kim burrell is so annointed, and this album No ways Tired shows just that. Everybody can say that you are wrong to say "[EDITED BY EJ FOR POTTYMOUTHEDNESS]". But I see that you had great reason because I have noticed that people have just gotten away from what the true gospel is supposed to be about.
The dispute is not about ministry. It's about the album songs/production. No one knocking her intention nor her ability. Let's not make this a "holy" war as "ministry" was never a point of interest of any opinion. That's the reason to sing in the first place. Please don't try to be deep on something this harmless...geeeezz! The original subject was a review of the album...period. I'm almost positive the record label could care less about ministry if she only sold 1000 units and had no hits in the project. Let's not forget it is a business. They don't spend thousands of dollars for her to minister. If people don't like it they won't buy it and if people don't buy it the label doesn't get paid. If the label don't get paid then Kim doesn't get paid....oh and the cover of an album is VERY important. It's called marketing.
Kim burrell's album is one of the best albums Ive heard out . True musicians get what we are saying but "critics" never know what they are talking about. No ways tired gives me every annoiting I need. Touches me in a lot of places, I had to jump a few times when I heard these songs. I don't jump for many artist but i jumped for this album. It might not be what the common folk expected but it is what true musicians needed. We needed to know that there is still hope for the music industry. Real vocals, true talent. I just want to say that i am ashame to even be going back in foward with this. This Cd is outstanding to me thanks Mike for your comments Im glad to see someone that is on the same page as me. Not blinded by the love of Kim. Just amazed by the experience of hearing this album
Well...I'm gonna have to agree with Mike, Katydids, and Dr. Hill. I know everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but I"m actually surprised by the amount of negative reviews here. I guess a lot of people are turned off by an album of "remakes." I understand the desire for more fresh, original material, but I'm sure she will put out records to satisfy those cravings in the future. For now, I happen to enjoy her presentation of classic congregational hymns. I happen to come from a church where hymn singing is a staple of every worship service. Unfortunately, the predictable, dry arrangements in church usually lull me into a coma. So I appreciate Kim's fresh interpretations of classics that even Grandma can appreciate. Her few original tracks and interpretation of the jazz standard, Someone to Watch Over Me, are enjoyable as well. Although I have a "million" cd's, this record will definitely have it's place in my listening cycle.
All I was saying in my many posts to this particular topic was that I liked the cd and how she jazzyed up the hyms however, I still feel the music sounded a bit cheap and the production could have been better. But overall I can't complain because something is better than nothing and she is still ministering through music. I'm not being negative because I will support Kim for lyfe. I was just expecting "Everlasting Life" quality. She could have still did this project but on that level I just mentioned and the Cd would have been better than what it is. I still love her and I listen to this cd daily.
Cussing on the blog.....EJ, sounds like someone needs of a timeout. Derrick Hearne.. what's up! Everybody, Derrick is a bad bass player! @Mike, the cover of your CD is very important. If it looks cheap, some people will not even take a chance to listening. If your cover is cheap, then people will assume that you were cheap in making the cd, and that the music is cheap. If you are calling yourself an artist, then this is stuff that you need to know. Packaging is extremely important. When you send your music to radio, you are up again a ton of other artist who are trying to get there stuff played. If your packaging isnt good, people wont take you as seriously. You can talk ministry and the true gospel all you want, but if your project does not sale, your record label will drop you, end of story. At the end of the day, you need to realize that every has opinions. Just because people arent feeling the cd as much as you, that's no reason to start talking crazy. Just say, "oh well, I disagree", and keep it moving. Kim Burrell did that project independent. I guarantee you that if Sony, or Zomba had did that project, they never would have allowed that picture. If you have some great music, you are going to package it in such a way that says this is a great project. I wish you well in your music endeavors, but I would advise you to learn more about the business side of things so that your project will be as successful as it can be. There are great singers, and choirs everywhere, but many of them fail because they fail to put the money into the project to make it sound and look as good as it can possibly be. @Dr.Hill You say we are getting away from what the true gospel is supposed to be about, but yet you support that kind of language on a "gospel blog"? No need to respond, just sounds contradicting. Whether we like the Kim project or not, we should be able to express our opinions in a more mature manner. @EJ I think its time for you to remind us of the rules again, lol. @Everyone If you wanna cuss in your blogs, mediatakeout & tmz are accepting new members. As for me and my house, we will blog at gospelpundit! Let's not corrupt this great website. I'm out!!!
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! What the world?! I do a bit of travelin' for a MINUTE and y'all lose your minds. Thanks to some of y'all for holdin' it down on the profanity issue. I have edited the offending comments and would like to take this time to remind everyone of the HOUSE RULES, one of which says: · Be clean. I can’t monitor your conversations elsewhere, and even the holiest of rollers I’ve met let one or two slip from time to time. But on gospelpundit.com, you’ve gotta reign in any profanity and/or obscenity. Re-read your comments before you post ‘em. As a reminder, folks who can't follow the rules (even if you think you're justified in breakin' them) will be banned from the site. Having said that: @Mike, @Dr. Hill, and @Derrick Hearne: WELCOME TO THE SITE! Thanks for coming and stick around. My view: Kim Burrell is undoubtedly an unparalleled vocalist and musician. There is no one like her in the MUSIC business, period. And that is probably why people are a bit perplexed by this album. I listened to it often and I appreciate it because I think it's great music. But I also don't knock people who say "I expected more from her." And that's a fair expectation. It's been 8 years since her last album, NUMEROUS singles ("Have Faith In Me" and "That's What He's Done") were featured on television and radio... people kinda expected that when she said "this song is on my upcoming album," that it would kinda... be on the upcoming album. Again, no love lost by me or GospelPundit.com cuz she's phenomenal. But I do understand why some people are disappointed.
Well, to everyone out there who has heard this album I know that you all are very disappointed. So am I. I agree with Love this should have set the mark but its not even the race. How can we get all of our church folk that have left to go into the R&B like { Underdogs, Brian Mcknight, The Conerboys, Usher, almost everyone in the ATL and etc} world back. After hearing this from Kim I am so saddened so many people look up to here and to even hear this album which not even anointed at all and I mean at all. It sound like she made up at least two song on the spot which have no meaning no anointing, I feel that her & her producer did not agree musically, its just seem so wrong . The next subject in hand is that I agree with Luda this is a business first the picture means everything. The record label is acting like they just want to make money. It is really time for a Joshua generation to stand like the Mary Mary the Ian Vons, and the (B.R.U.T.H.A. Revelation is a great song by the way which is on You Tube which is not the R&b group) And every new artist that comes out let this album teach us a lesson. Let do better than this, keep coming with greatness because the word of god will not fall below a sub par category and will never fall. Last but not least I don't want Kim to ride off her name which is shame to say at the least. I just wanted the album to come from a place where she felt it( which i guess was no where). Once again no more riding off on the name who cares. People want great music....
So.... I reaaally like Kim's duet with her sister, "Yes to His Will." Kathy sounds a bit like Blanche McAllister-Dykes. How can we get our hands on the Christmas concert?
Mike Easter sunday went very well. All of my youth individuals had a copy of Kim's new cd. When you see young faces worshipping and giving praises to god with any gospel cd that is a great thing. Our easter program had many performances with songs from Kim's new album. I surrendor... all you can see was tears and joy and the congregation eyes. Young people singing to the lord. Some of yall may not like the album but I know when someone like Kim have a lot of impact on not just grown folk but the youth then she must be doing something right. In this day of age you wont see much of that. I love the Cd and the cover. The cover looks like she is at peace and singing "giving praises to her lord" no matter what we think.
Mike email me I have some material I would like to try to get out. I am a director of a youth choir and write a lot and sing and play. Im no kim but I have many skills.
Tom, First of all I don't know how you got that many Cd's to pass out so soon the album came out on April 7 and it was delayed in shipping and church was Sunday so it seems very fishy that you are trying to butter this album up so much. When did the band rehearse to the music? When did the rehearsal with the youth and the band take place? Did you do an emergency rehearsal? When did the cd's get to you & that many when they didn't get to no one else that fast? I ask my children if they like the music and they said no but I put Mary Mary in and they love it. Far as the youth I know for a fact that they don't like it unless they want to go to sleep. She a great singer but with bad production and ok and I mean Ok lyrics makes it worst. Are you Kim Burrell trying help your sales or you part of the record company. If we are Christians please be honest and not let someone with some usual story move you to buy this and scare you with holy than tho garble.I promise you the album is ok. This album is missing a very essential element and that is the anointing. The only song that is worth listening to is the one with her and her sister.
Wow. Devon you know nothing about me . You only know my first name and what I wrote on the blogg. Second At God's World of Music Pre ordering the Cd is a big thing NOW OF DAY.. Makes you get it first hand. 3rd I don't know how you do what you do at your church. But As a director I promote great singing. I don't force my beliefs of who is good on anyone. 4th my youth group is very musically inclined, and all of them no how to memorize, write, sing, and read music. So it wouldn't be hard to pick up a song in a few days. Just like reading a piece of music, that is how I know you know nothing about music. 5th I don't have to promote anyone Cd . You got the big picture all messed up. Great singers promote their own work. Don't accuse me of anything when you know nothing about me. You can go on and on about that crap you saying but the Cd to me was excellent and I do agree with mike. You take it how you want to I don't care. You can tell "truemusicians from critics" (that is very true ). And i really hope one day people will realize qaulity music
@Tom I didn't mean to offend you and yes I am a hard critic and musician it just seem so that your comments where so inflated. On second notice Kim can sing I take nothing away from her gift but when it comes down to this album it ok. So can we agree to disagree and leave it here. You say stuff like your youth group knows how to Read music, Write, and Sing but once again I was not just speaking of talent I was speaking of the the absent presents of the anointing on this album. Hopefully if she comes out with another album they will be from a deeper place and will be felt for all to here. ( Didn't Mean To Offend)
Tom I'm currently working with pajam. I'm on and off because of the boot camp. But reading these messages really amuse me pure entertainment lol. But I want to hear your voice pda is looking for new artist, and if you any good i can get you an audition. Email me at IntroducingMikeDerez@pajam.com
WOW!!!! If this 1 cd brought this much drama, Kim must be doing something right somewhere. Im just sayin! At the end of the day, whether we like her cd or not, she will continue doing what she does best. Gotta love Kim!
@Ray: right?! Folks, I've been reading your comments (as always) and I'm debating whether I need to close the comments on this post cuz y'all been actin' funny. For real... we must, as Christians, at ALL times edify one another. There is a way to be honest and share our own opinions without tearing down one another. I'm not seeing that in some of these comments, which is unfortunate. Three things I wanna point out: 1. Some folks will adore this CD, others will hate it, and a bunch of folks will fall somewhere between. The beautiful thing: no one is WRONG. Y'all are spending a lot of energy debating over whether this is a good album, but THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG ANSWER to that question-- there cannot be, any more than debating over whether your mama's cooking is good. Just cuz YOU like it doesn't mean I will. And just cuz I hate it doesn't mean you can't still eat it at Christmas and what not. ;-) 2. Let's try not to say that an album lacks anointing. Cuz if you didn't feel any, but someone else definitely did, then SOMEBODY'S frontin'. And it might be you. Until the Holy Ghost gives us an "Anoint-O-Meter," we're probably not gonna be able to say definitively that an album is, or is not, "anointed." So, let's avoid that altogether. 3. Try to re-read your comments before you post 'em. Consider whether you'd be at all offended if someone said them to YOU. If so, edit what you've written. Bottom line is this, I think: Kim Burrell is an awesome vessel used by God for His purposes-- we've seen that time and time again. She's also a musician who enjoys the ART of making music. She made a record of music that blesses her and that she believed would bless others. And it does. Let's try not to knock that. At the same time, if someone says they weren't feelin' this particular project, that's fair too. So, let's try not to knock them, either. Now, y'all hug and make up or NO ONE is gettin' ice cream later...
Amen EJ say it say it!!!!!!! Put ur foot down on that devil n stomp his head there's no room for him here.
Ok Lord Jesus...you answered my prayers, and a Kim Burrell album has been released with songs from the heart, and a message that I really needed....Now, my other prayer...PLEASE let LAURYN HILL come out with something....she can record a caugh in the mic, and I'd buy it...LOL....But I'm so Happy that Kim Burrell has finally released something...at first I was questioning whether I was going to like it or not...but when I found myself humming some of the songs, I knew the songs were growing on me...so as of now I'm LOVING IT!...I've played it everyday while at work....
@ Love "Once a loved fan but now I will never buy another Kim Burrell Album do to this rushed recording." That sounds kinda harsh if you are really supposed to be a Kim fan. Now I'll admit, I'm not the biggest Kim fan and I was never checking for the cd....especially with all the horrible reviews coming out about it now. But if my favorite singer ever came out with a below par album, I'm not gonna completely quit them for the rest of their career! rotfl. Every album can't be a 5 star hit.
Are you people kidding me? Do you buy an album for the cover now? The project is phenomenal! She financed this out of her own pocket. Who cares what the cover looks like. How many albums have I purchased that had all the right covers and the content and vocals sucked!?
@Kevin: LOL. Welcome! I agree with u. When it comes to Kim, she kinda could have put a tree on the cover and I'd buy it.
We don't buy cd's for the cover but the "appearance" of the album is very important. There are albums with great artwork that sounded paltry at best but there were more times where the artwork was horrible and people won't even pick it up let alone purchase. Think of it this way, would you eat a burnt looking steak with a raw looking baked potato regardless of who prepared it?
uhhhh...r we done yet?! nEXT! lolol
I love Kim she is awesome some of you are right the cover of the album looks fake but She is The best and for those of you who don't know... No Ways tired is a song out of the hymn book.... So Kim just smacked some of you in the face with that its a Cd with alot of songs out of the Hymn book.....I like the Cd its Laid back and Calm....But I Think she could have done better though!!!!
I am surprised at how many people are hating on Kim's cd! Considering she's not signed to a major record label and probably didn't have an extraordinary budget, I think she did an excellent job. On her worst day she would probably still release a better album than 99% of the world's population. I really would suggests everybody listen to the cd again and listen to the arrangements. Anybody who can tie "If you're happy and you know it" and the "put a smile on your face" jingle in one song is alright with me!
Finally read all of these comments and..."Happy" is still one of the hottest songs of 2009 to me. Gotta say this, though: Big thanks to EJ for creating an environment where people who feel this passionately about Gospel----THE GREATEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD----care share their opinions. I love it!
God bless you, Sydney-- thanks for seeing my heart on that.
Whoa Whoa Whoa, 1st off, Kim Burrell was NOT trained by the Clark Sisters (read this somewhere within the comments). Second, this CD is great, Kim Burrell may have remade some older songs, but she put a great spin on them, especially "My Faith Looks Up To Thee" with a great jazz spin to it...DO NOT sleep on this album. Kim Burrell is up there right next to the Clarks, Paces, Winans, etc (Y'all know who the rest are) P.S. I agree with the cover, could have been a little better, but hey, you win some, you lose some!
Hey I just wanted to mention to everyone if you didn't know that Kim Burrell will be releasing another cd before the year is out. I wonder what the next cd will have? This information can be verified in a recent interview she did on King Talk Radio on youtube.com.
Wow! It was interesting reading all of the comments. I love this CD. Kim is sooooo gifted. I love the first run on My Faith looks up to Thee". The "Thou" runs all the way down an octave to "lamb" and then she resumes with "of Calvary" like she didn't just skip an octave! It was impossible for me to do from the starting key. Y'all shoulda heard me trying, though. LOL! This CD stays in my car player 90% of the time, until my husband makes me put in Smokie or John P. Kee's "Yes, Lord" CD. Yeah, we take it waaaaaaay back sometimes. :-)
OK folks, I HAD to come back and post this. I must admit that I had my reservations about this cd at first, but I went and picked it up yesterday and I am definitely feeling it!!! I would have gotten it anyway just bcuz its KIM, but im just saying... So for all you "punders" that were like me..GO HEAD AND GET IT and let it MARINADE!! lololol @author08 I thought I was the only one who still had "Yes, Lord"?! lol
Kim is not just one of the greatest gospel singers...but one of the greatest singers period...Beyonce is a Kim Burrell fan. The tone and pitch of this singer is phenomenal yet she does not sing to be famous which is why you don't find her CDs always pleasing the masses. This is integrity at its best.

Okay... maybe it's because I am a musician rooted in jazz/gospel. I bought this recording and I am still in love with the gifts of this woman. Her music is like ear candy! Kim Burell has an advanced ear to be able to sing these arragements like she does. I often feel that some folk can be shallow when it comes to a sense of musicicality, but you have to listen beyond... The musicianship, the arranging, on this recording along with Kim's vocal ability is nothing less than stellar and rare in todays amateurish musical market! The song called "Happy!", her takes on "I Surrender All" and "No Ways Tired"... the arrangements are absolutely awesome and don't sound easy to sing over either! "Just As I Am " is mellow in it's tropicality. And when she starts scattin on that Stevie stuff in "Prelude"... All I can say is God is good to allow us to have music like this to listen to and I hope it NEVER goes away! It make me feel proud and I know a whole bunch of other musicians who feel the same, not to mention that we get a positive message. My only complaint about her digital releases is that the musicians/producers/writers on her recordings as 'baad' as they are, just don't get enough mention. I have often found myself attemption to locate names. I want to know who they are, what they look like and what they are doing and not to mention them may be counting them out of lots of potential employment...
