Who saw it???
The show opened with Kierra Sheard singing “Invisible” which, to me, was the PERFECT song for the Dove Awards. I wish she had sung a little bit more of it, but the part that she DID sing, she sang her behind off!
She then introduced Mary Mary, who sang “Get Up.” We knew that, cuz it’s what they were nominated for, but I was disappointed cuz I wanted them to re-introduce Kierra to do a little of “God In Me”. Instead, it just kinda ended. The Marys’ performance wasn’t their best, but there was nothing necessarily wrong with it either… it just kinda WAS. But, no prob. Glad y’all could open the dern thing!
Jonathan Nelson performed as part of the “New Artist of the Year” medley. I was glad to see him on the show cuz I think he’s really good. The background folk were crowded around two mics and their sound wasn’t stellar, but the song is still a fave of mine.
The musical finale featured Edwin Hawkins, Donnie McClurkin, Mandisa and Melinda Watts singing “Oh Happy Day,” trading turns RIPPING the mic to shreds. Edwin was classic, Donnie soared as usual, Mandisa reminded everyone why we liked her to begin with, and Melinda began the process of staking her claim as a new artist to watch. Good job, y’all!
The only gospel artist to win on-air was Mary Mary for Urban Recorded Song of the Year for “Get Up.” Some awards were given during the pre-show, though, so visit http://www.doveawards.com/ a full list of winners.
Gospel Music Channel is gonna air encore performances throughout this weekend, so make sure you catch it. It’s great to note the differences between the Stellars and the Doves… which begs the question:
Which did you enjoy watching more: The Doves or The Stellars? And why? Consider the performances, the artists, your familiarity with one over the other, the production quality, the money invested in each show… And for those of you who didn’t watch, but could have, why did choose NOT to? Shout-out to my dude, Evin, for the nudge to ask y’all about this topic.
Talk to me!

Now why in the world was Kierra not allowed to sing the full duration of her song? I believe every other performer sung their selections in full. Kierra is a 2-time Dove award winner and she should've been given courtesy to do that. On top of that, she introduced Mary Mary mid-performance and they don't even come out with "God In Me"? Mess. As far as Stellars or Doves - definitely the Stellars! Lots of unfamiliar faces at the Dove Awards for me. One thing I do appreciate about the Dove Awards is the harder competition. At the Stellars, you can easily predict who will win because it's always the same people winning the same awards. Blah.
I beg to differ with Keisha on the predictability of the winners with the Doves. For a long time and even now, the Doves have time and time again disregarded to place artists in the proper categories. And several artists continue to be repeat award winners (dominate so-to- speak) for example Steven C. Chapman, Natalie Grant and KJ52(for Rap/Hip hop...?) to name a few. I think at least some of the artists themselves need to say something, or just opt out of the nominations all together, but that's just my opinion. As for the Stellars I can't say much. I guess I'm just glad they have an alternative way to recognize the real "gospel" artists that often get left out of the Doves. Either way I don't really get a chance to watch these shows. I usually learn about what happened through websites/blogs like this one. So thanks EJ. PEACE!
The Stellars are the best...no question about it.....especially in the new artist category when that man, jump on the drums, fell on the piano, did a split on the floor and acted like a fo0l.....I didn't understand a word he said and I am sure it wasn't the Holy Ghost that got him......He needs to go and read the 66 books again, fast and pray because he aint got it..... The same goes for 21:03....stop jumping around the stage so much so no one can understand a word you are saying....If all you can give me is a beat then I might as well go mainstream...Your songs should have a message, but first let me understand what you are saying
I like the Doves better because you get a mixture of all types of gospel music and it's more relaxed than the Stellars. I too was a little upset about the fact that Kierra didn't perform her entire song but maybe next time. I guess you really have to be in to CCM music to enjoy the Doves. @jameraz , the grammy's also put gospel artist in the wrong catagories as well, but that's the record labels fault more than the producers and Don Jackson(Excutive producer for the Stellarsz) also works with these shows so he could say something as well.
@jameraz: thanks for the comment! glad to be of service. :-) @christina: amen to the "mixture of all types" part. the stellars aren't always the most inclusive... and when they were, the announcer kept callin' the woman "Martha MiNOOOOOZi" instead of MuNIZzi. aarrrggh! @Wanda: you can't understand what 21:03 is saying? i can always understand their message and their words... it's a blessin' to me. no???

However, if you would listen to their CD, you would find that their lyrics are beautiful and powerful. I find it interesting that people can be negative about an artists' work and want to place them in a box. But when you listen to works like that of Thomas A. Dorsey, I'm sure you consider it traditional. Well, when he first burst on the scene, he was not traditional at all. My point is, give it a chance. If you don't like it, fine. I for one, do not care for gospel hip hop, but if it reaches a generation of Christians, I would gladly support it. I'm just saying listen to the lyrics before you judge. Be blessed!
I have to say neither one of the shows really strikes my attention but I would have to lean more towards the Dove Awards because they showcase all sides of gospel. The only thing I dislike is the fact that the same artist win the same year and I feel that they should really rethink giving the same artist the same award every year. Now w/ the stellars this year was a huge dissapointment the whole show I was like who is that, never heard of them. But then it also seem they use the same formula w/ the same people every year its like you already know the line-up before they announce it I feel they should switch it up......Stellars got me really upset this year anyway cuz Trin-i-tee 5:7 didnt get nominated for their album "T57" which was grammy, dove, bet nominated but not the Stellars.....something wasnt right there and not only that they havent performed on the stellars since their first album....me and Don Jackson need to talk they need to give the quartets a rest cuz they have Lee Williams up there every year
