Slept On: Joann Rosario (now Condrey) – "Joyous Salvation"

[Editor's Note:  Most of you know her as Joann Rosario, but I'm using her new name, as she recently wed Atlanta-based gospel DJ (and host of BET's Lift Every Voice) Cory "Coco Brother" Condrey.]

I’d actually like to do a post on each one of Joann Condrey’s albums, because I think the industry and consumers have kinda Slept On all of her stuff to date.  But, for now, I’ll stick with the most recent.

Her latest album, Joyous Salvation, was a great collection of some incredible music, featuring background vocals from some of the greatest in the industry (i.e., Darwin Hobbs, Blanche McAllisterJerard and Jovaun Woods, LeAnne Palmore) and masterful production from giants like Aaron Lindsey, Fred Jerkins and Donald Lawrence.  This year, the project garnered her a Stellar Award nod for Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year.

For your listening pleasure, here’s a snippet of one of my favorite tracks from Joann Condrey’s Joyous Salvation– “You Are Holy,” written/produced by Aaron Lindsey, with some bgvocal production by Donald Lawrence (you can hear it!).  Following it is a YouTube video (but it’s just audio) of another hit from that album–”Restore To Me.”

Who else has it?  You love it?  Who Slept On it?  Why?  Talk to me!

Sorry..I slept real hard on this one. I didnt even buy it. I listened to some of it at the local bookstore here a couple of years ago and to be honest wasnt that impressed. I do have her previous works though but this one didnt quite win me over. I like her 1st project the best. This one is probably one of those projects where I'll have to let it marinade on me.

This is a very good CD!!! I truly love Beautiful Son, Beyond, More Than Anything, There Is A City! Basically the entire CD! Recently, I have been playing There Is A City every day. I am certain that if my CD player could talk in the car, it would say 'GIVE IT A REST!!!" The words to the songs really minsisters to one's heart! I do believe that if any one buys this CD they will be satisfied!

@Ray...I agree with you on this one man. I didn't sleep on this album. I was wide awake when I heard the mediocrity of this cd. I'm a big Joann Rosario fan, but I couldn't bring myself to buying this album after I listened to it on Rhapsody. Most of the songs were uninteresting to me, and the length of the album (10 songs) didn't exactly help. I know she has dealt with problems with her vocal cords in the past, and I'm not quite sure she has gotten over that. Her voice didn't sound the same as it did on her first 2 albums. I agree that she has been "slept on" as an artist, but I prefer her first 2 cd's (More, More, More, and Now More than ever...Worship) over "Joyous Salvation...just my opinion.

@Ray and @mightymouth: Ewwwww!!! It IS a good album, I promise. Her voice has definitely changed, but it's for the better... she is able to hit the same notes, but from a better, less vocally-abusive place. I see I'ma have to make y'all believers...

@EJ LOL make me a believer then chief cuz my faith is a lil weak wit dis here one!

@EJ To be fair, I will go back and listen to it one more time. My musical taste does tend to change from time to time, so maybe it will grow on me now...lol.

I love Joann...This cd was a blessing to me. There were some skipable tracks, but it was still a very good cd!

Joann Condrey does have a nice voice, this last production sounded much like the others but, sad to say much of the music was not of the same caliber. I think she did better when she was doing background. I saw her at Always Sisters a couple of years ago. The performance was poor and the kids didn't seem to get it. It happens to the best
