Slept On: Marvin Winans – Alone But Not Alone

New series. I had a chat with a good friend the other day about an album that we thought was severely overlooked by folks– Marvin Winans’ Alone But Not Alone.  And that convo was the impetus for this new series on GospelPundit.comSlept On.

It’s gonna feature artists and albums that were underrated or overlooked by consumers and the gospel industry.  Hopefully, we can talk about good music ministries that should’ve gotten more attention than they received.  If you’ve got some ideas for folks that should be featured, email me at ej@gospelpundit.com.

In the meantime, back to Marvin Winans.  It was his loooooooooong-awaited debut solo album, he was singing like nobody’s business AND it featured some great guest artists– Carvin Winans, Deshondra Rideout, the late Ron Winans, Kim Burrell with Take 6 on bgv’s… Tommy Sims writing on it and what not… what more could you WANT?!

Listen here to one of my faves, “I Still Believe.”  The lyrics, bgvs, the VAMP…

Anybody have it and LOVE it like I do?  Anybody decided to pass on it and care to explain why?  Anybody wanna tell me why folks Slept On it?!

Talk to me!

Man! Thanks for talking about this album. This was one of the most slept on albums. I love the production, the writing and the great singing. The band/music is off the chain. I love the album. Marvin came back with a bang on this one. "Try" with Kim Burrell is just classic. I wish the industry would of received this better. Maybe PureSprings could of did better on the marketing side. Sometimes 3 months just won't cut it.

This cd is great. It stays in rotation. The writing was deep and full of substance. There was no 20 verse and 45 min vamps on this cd. He gave his testimony, but still kept it very musical. Tommy sims production is always great because he is creative, tasteful, and compliments the artist instead of out doing the artist. EJ you know good music. Keep it up.

In the words of Deitrick Haddon, "That's why i love 'it' like i do iiiii, i love 'it' like i do iiiiii...." ('it' should be HIM but changed just for this note) lolol This cd wuz mos def slept on BIG TIME! It had that serious ole skool Winans feel to it. And the duet with Kim wuz a perfect match both vocally and stylistically. For those who dont have it, THIS IS A MUST HAVE STRAIGHT UP!!!!

Yes sir! EJ, we spoke on this issue a while back! This was so slept on! It would be nice if his label would do another puch of this project! Everything about this project was so on point! I loved every single track. The track that messes me up everytime is "Sinners Prayers"! Tommy Sims wrote a great song, & Marvin sung his tail off!

I only found out about the CD 'cause Pastor Winans preached at our church b4 the release. I saw no advertising for it (???) Anyway, one of the best albums of 2007/2008. Faves: I Still Believe, I'm Over it Now and Sinner's Prayer.

This album was soo good! It was real and honest. There were few gospel cliches, breakthroughs and blessing with favor on this CD lol, so that's why it was slept on :-) Favs. I Still Believe, Just Don't Wanna Know, I Shall Never

This CD is the bomb!!! It is classic Winans and I love it! I did not hear anything about it on the radio. I happened to see it in the music store and bought it without a 2nd thought. I'm glad I got mine. Play it allllll the time. The lyrics are powerful and Marvin's vocals are 2nd to none! The man is gospel music. I can personally relate to "I Still Believe". Every song it awesome with a story to tell.

@all: yeah, I hate that the promo wasn't as strong as it could've been. A lot of people who LOVE the Winans fam would've bought it, but prolly didn't even know about it until well after its release. Makes me wanna start a Street Team... lol

You have to remember that his project was a studio project, and not as "churchy" as some people may have liked. I think there are people who prefer to hear him in a live recording, more "churchy" vibe. Either way, he's still the man.

Yes Yes Yes and A to the MEN. I slept on this project - and now I am wide awake. I can not stop playing it - I thought it was because I love Marvin so very very deeply (lol), but that is not it. This project is anointed. From track 1 to 12. Wonderful... the best kept secret I have even discovered.

LOL @ cyndi. Welcome! i'm glad you woke up! it really is an amazing project.

this project was vintage, vintage, vintage. Loved Try (I never figured out how spiders CAN'T scale across the wall, though) Just don't wanna know, sinner's prayer and I still believe. This man can write and sing y'all. Love him.

re: luvgoodsangin "Try" I think the" itsy bitsy spider" song was my least favorite :) but you gotta luv Pastor Winans for the genius that he is ...

WoW!!! I absolutely love this album. It is so inspirational in times of feeling down, uncertainty, illness, and in assuring you of God's promise. I absolutely love the duet with Deshondra Rideout, the girl's voice is beautiful as well as the duet with Ron Winan, such an inspiration. If you do not have this album, I definitely recommend you get it. Not only is Marvin Winans a renowned singer, but he is a wonderful pastor. You will be blessed!

I picked this album up and have been listening to it all week! I have a long commute to and from work and this music has been such a blessing. The lyrics and music have really moved me. And there's nothing like some great worship and reflection to pass the time on the expressway!

Marvin Winans is a genius! I bought the cd as soon as it came out. I have been a long time fan of his and the family. This cd is special, because Marvin pours out his innermost feelings in the songs. It was like he's been wanting to get it out for sooooo long. Now....the time has come for him to release! He displayed a side of Marvin Winans that he hardly shares with his listening audience. With that being said, he did not disappoint us with his annointed/melodic/sexy voice; and the music is top quality as always. The last track is my one of my favs; "Peace and Love". It has a funky tempo with a "Marvin Gaye sound". U ROCK MARV!!!!
