Ya Heard?: Clark Sisters Remake Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground"

Y’all heard the Clark Sisters’ version of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” yet?  They recorded it with Robert Randolph as part of the Oh Happy Day: An All-Star Music Celebration album, released by Vector Records/EMI Gospel last week.  The project also features the Soul Children of Chicago (shout-out), Mavis Staples, Al Green and Heather Headley, as well as mainstream artists like Jon Bon Jovi, Michael McDonald, Joss Stone and Queen Latifah.

Honestly, at first, I thought “here comes a trainwreck,” but it’s really not bad AT ALL!  Dorinda seemed a bit more reserved until the end, but each of the ladies held it down throughout.  I think they really put their signature “Clark Sisters sound,” with the harmonies and acrobatics, on a classic song.

Listen:

PLUS, I’m glad to see them branching out and doing more stuff in different arenas, getting some of the recognition that they deserve from the mainstream.

Now, lemme know what YOU think!

dem gurls can SANGG!!! lol..they could rock 'Mary had a little lamb' as far as I'm concerned!!! Sang Clark Sisters!!! Personally they sound like they always sound!! The Clark Sisters have received compliments from secular/mainstream artists as being their inspiration!! I'm GLAD they have remained true to themselves and their sound!!! They don't have to branch out and do anything but what they have been doing. They are 'The Clark Sisters!!!' lol

A couple things I want to add... first, folks should know that this album is available only at Wal Mart. Second, the real gem on this record is Jonny Lang & the West Angeles COGIC Choir's cover of John P Kee's "I Believe". Fire. They did it live on Leno last night... in case you missed it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWksMOFVLbg If you aren't hip to Jonny Lang already, get his Turn Around album and let it bless you!

Great song! Those sisters are just blessed and I am just in awe of their talent!!! Side note: This reminds me of the blog you did recently about the pastor that sang secular songs in the pulpit but changed the lyrics. I know so many had feelings contrary to the belief that gospel can be found in many types of lyrics. I just wonder if people think this is the same?...Just a thought

@Tamarra: YOU have hit the nail on the HEAD! Before I even posted it, I thought "I bet folks won't even see this as the same thing as those love songs." But, there's not much of a difference, in my opinion... Anyone wanna weigh-in? ESPECIALLY if you had a problem with the love songs video... what's the difference?

Yo that's was on point!!! good job clark sisters and thank you Grant for the link I'm feelin the Jonny Lang version as well

Yea, I was just wondering why is it that gospel artists tend to take secular songs and turn them around as if they cant come up with their own?. Not hating by no means, but I am curious. Please correct me if Im wrong, but I have never heard of secular artists taking a gospel song and flippin it to fit their genre.

^Maaaany secular artists took gospel songs and influences to create secular records and vice versa. It's been happening since forever. Read the lyrics to "Higher Ground" - this is not a love song. It's a relevant message to the state of the world (which we as 'humans' all live in) and religion ("God is gonna show you higher ground. He's the only friend you have around.") Not all songs made by secular artists promote the devil. I didn't partake in the previous discussion on this (couldn't find the blog post). But this is not the same to me, the Clark Sisters have made a few songs relevant to the world such as "Pray 4 The Usa" and "World".

Dont like it. Only Stevie singing his song is great.

@Keisha Oh ok kul. I'm not up on secular music a whole lot. I never really listen to it, but I was curious about that. Thanks.
