As you’ve gotta know by now, Y’Anna Crawley was crowned Sunday Best on BET last night! Whooo hooooooooooooo!!! If you recall, I called that one (despite my oft-proclaimed love of Jessica’s artistry). Congrats to you, Y’Anna! BIG things are in store.
I guess this is my last recap until next season. You ready? Let’s go get ‘em.
The show opened with Kirk talking about the car they’d win, but I was just anxious to see some good singin’. Right after the first commercial break, Donald Lawrence & Co. took to the stage with their hit single, “Back II Eden.” LOVED IT. First, they sounded and looked great (of course). But by the time Floyd Wilkinson took the mic for the vamp, I nearly lost it. That dude sounded like a trillion bucks and he brought his game, for real. I want a D. Lawrence tour– who do I have to talk to???
As if THAT wasn’t enough, Y’Anna and Jessica followed with a performance of New Edition’s classic R&B song, “Can You Stand The Rain.” WHAT?! At first, I was like “who would’ve thought to do this,” but as my boy, Al, reminded me: The Murrills just re-made it on their debut album, Family Prayer. In any event, Y’Anna and Jessica sang it like they owned it– great job.
Next came individual performances from Y’Anna (“Encourage Yourself”) and Jessica (“I Surrender All”). Both performances were great, of course. Y’Anna was noticeably hoarse, but she’s a pro– she pulled through and still gave a great performance. Jessica gave her all, as usual, and had BeBe and Erica crying so tough that they couldn’t gather the words to comment on it.
The “concert” continued with BeBe & CeCe Winans reuniting on stage with new music for the first time in yeeeeaaaars (note: I say “new music,” cuz they reunited to perform “Hold Up The Light” with Melinda Doolittle on American Idol in 2007). The performed their single, “Close To You,” from their forthcoming, highly anticipated reunion album.
It was GREAT to see them together again. They sounded amazing (both have age-less, classic voices that I can listen to day-in, day-out). Someone on Twitter (follow me!) said that they didn’t really play off of each other that well this time, but I think they just haven’t done it in a while… it’ll be SOOOO on point by the time they start their Reunion Tour!
Finally, Kirk announced that Y’Anna won the competition.
And I wrote that as anticlimactically as it occurred on the show, which brings me to an important note…
A lot of people expressed EXTREME disappointment over the fact that the entire season was taped in less than two weeks, including the finale (two versions of it were taped, one with each finalist winning, and our votes determined which version would air). People said “but, it should be live like American Idol,” or “it takes away some of the excitement.” And I said “well, let’s just wait and see… it should still be emotional for the ladies.”
When the announcement was made, both Jessica and Y’Anna looked as casual as if they were being selected for softball teams. No tears, no shaking, no arms waving in praise… I needed SOMEbody to fall out!
Hear me clearly: I do not fault THEM for that. I think they gave as much of a “real” expression as they could, considering that one had to conjur up excitement and the other had to fabricate disappointment, then flip it and re-record it again… but that’s the magic of television for ya!
Y’Anna closed the show out with her upcoming single, “I Promise,” produced by Buster & Shavoni (ain’t heard from y’all in a minute!). From Twitter to text messages, I think we AAAALLLL screamed out “this is like a BRANDY track!” And it soooooooo coulda been– but Yannie’s got this one… and I’m glad to hear it.
What did you all think of the finale?!

Congratulations Y'anna! Man - EJ, you just said about everything I was going to say. I felt a disconnect at the end of the show. I was even mad to the point like, well if Y'anna is going to act like that then she didn't deserve to win, but I understand now that there were two tapings and I'm sure it's hard to imitate a true "I WON" feeling so the two tapings explains it. I wanted my girl Y'anna, to tear up that "Encourage Yourself" (that's my song), so when I heard her voice leaving her I was like AW MAN! And yes - a Brandy track definately on that last song. I needed for someone to fall out too, I didn't get no tears or nothing - I felt empty. Was there even any confetti-I'm just saying.
Hopefully from the ratings, BET will invest alittle more time in Sunday Best and give us the live experience. I am not going to lie, I wanted Jessica to win but she will still get a album deal and I WILL BUY IT. I thought the new track for Y'anna was very nice, it did sound like a Brandy or Monica though. I believe it's a good bridge song for the music industry. Last, D. Lawrence was AWESOME.
@EJ 'selected for softball teams' LOLLLLLLLLLL are you kidding me? Hilarious! Yeah, the finale did flat-line big time. Ok, some minor points: * I liked Yanni's new single, I could hear Brandi like portions, but I thought she made it her own.... *Was Y'anna lip-syncing the first verse of that song? *Was it me or was BeBe's crying a PR move? (this was taped two days after his legal issues) He seemed sincere, but I am just suspect of TV. *DLaw's singers LOOKED and sounded FABULOUS!!!! Let's really get back on top of the world, BET! * CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN is a cold-blooded song. They both sounded great, but I thought it was a slug/songfest at the end, though. *Jessica looked fabulous (as always). I didn't care for Yanni's dress; seemed to be a disparity between the two. Congrats to both ladies for your accomplishments!!!
Yeah, it stinks that they taped 2 different endings. Donald Lawrence and Co. were fantastic, that Floyd Wilkerson aint no joke. The last song was definitely Brandy sounding vocally, but Im sure that probably exactly how the girl sang it when they gave her the demo. This is why its so important who you have produce a song, because although the song was cool, it didnt sound like the style she has portrayed on the show. I also heard Brandy riffs on Can you stand the rain. Its like ok, you've never song like that the whole competition, now all of sudden you sound like Brandy? Hopefully the producers dont try to change their style, but give them material that is tailor made for them.
@ebonisun: The confetti was digital, on the screen in the background. Ewwwww! @tyrone: You're right... album deals for both, I'm sure. And I'm coppin' them ASAP. @luvgoodsangin: I'm just sayin... SOFTBALL! lol @luda: I agree... didn't sound like what we've heard Y'Anna do on the show, but she used to sing in a go-go band, to0-- I think the SHOW didn't hear the real Y'Anna. I think the Brandy-like song is right up her alley, stylistically. We'll see...
Congratulations to Y’anna! Every time she enters that zone of her’s I see and hear a next generation Aretha Franklin. Y'anna, please take care of your voice. I don't know how the shows were organized, but the hoarseness in your voice was pretty obvious the past few weeks, which seemed odd since you appear to have significant experience under your belt in the church and with the band(s). You definitely have the capability to enter the elite levels of the industry. Hopefully you'll stay close to people like the Mary Mary and the Winans who can really help in the guidance department. God Bless! Ron
You know what? The whole "Brandy" feel with Y'anna's song is universal!! As soon as I heard the song, I was like "OMG, Brandy would absolutely have loved this song for her latest record" but I do believe Y'anna did a beautiful job with the material she was given. I do fear that they are going to push her into a more contemporary sound for this first record. But that's just how they do with the industry. But I know that she will shine through. The most touching part about the finale was Jessica's redition of "I Surrender All." I really felt her ministry with her delivery. I can't wait to see where Jessica goes from here because I see great things in her future. Even though she didn't win this competition, there will be doors opening for her left and right, this girl is the truth!!! Bebe and Cece, sounding the same as when they first began!!! Lovely song! and D'Lawrence and the Co. meant business!!!!! Great show... WOULD LOVE IF THEY RELEASE THIS SEASON ON DVD!!!! You know just putting it out there lol
I think season 2 of Sunday Best was horrible, the show was rushed, last year was the bomb! with Crystal Aikens, no tears when the announcement was made concerning the winner. No graffitti, no tears, nothing sincere, no Thanking God, the clothes was horrible, the tattoos all over the body. I think Jessica Reedy should have won! On season 1 it was sincere, annointed, the power of the Lord was at every show! I think they need to do better in season 3 Now I enjoyed the single that is going to be released, I must say she did tear the song up!!!
I think them taping the whole season in 2 weeks and taping 2 endings has alot to do with the judges and host. Mary Mary, Kirk, and Bebe are artists themselves! Mary Mary has currently been on tour, and I'm sure Kirk and Bebe are doin their thang too. So they probably don't have time to do live shows every week for a couple of months. Unlike American Idol, where the show is their bread and butter. So unless we want some "unknowns" judging and hosting next year, it's probably gonna stay that way. Personally, I don't really mind. I just want some good SANGIN!! :)
I understand what you are saying, but, if you compare season 1 to season 2 THIS WAS ALL A JOKE! now I agree, I just want good SANGING TOO! LOLLLLLL, GOD BLESS!
I did NOT care for that song Y'Anna sang at the end. It just seemed so forced. But then I also don't like Brandy's music either. I would love to see a live recording out of Y'Anna for her first album. BeBe & CeCe was anti-climatic for me too, that was also my first time hearing the song. It sounds sooo dated. Not feeling it. I wish these ladies would have covered up a bit. Y'Anna had no biz wearing that dress knowing that she is tatted up and big as all get out. Erica needed to cover up, as usual. Isn't she married? Why is she trying to appeal to the lust of other men then.
@Keisha, I feel you regarding the contestants, but do the contestants have any say so over their wardrobe while they are on the show?
Wow, I thought this was a contest for a Gospel show. Where did all the sanctimonious judgmental behavior drop in from? It's one thing to express one's like or dislike (opinion) regarding a musical style, song, unless you're recognized as someone with the credentials and experience to engage in peer review. It's also one thing to express your dislike for stuff in the show, which may represent unresolved issues in your own life. IMHO it’s altogether different and inappropriate to use your own baggage to assume something about these sisters’ relationships and/or their life stories (re: tattoos and clothing). I for one would rather pray that both of them have the substance and temerity to walk with God in order to survive the brutality intrinsic to the music industry.
Very Very, disappointed that Yanna Crawley won.. Yes I am a Jessica Reedy supporter but if anyone found theirself and accepted the lord even more and gave a heart filled testiomy it was Jessica. I think she is way more spirtual than Yanna.. Yanna Crawley is a Club girl who won the title Sunday Best but does not represent. She need to learn to minister and stop all that Yelling!!!! Staight CLUB.. When asked a question she don't even know what to say her answers are like a high school studen. example when ask what she was doning last year about this time her comment were " I probaly was at home, depressed, with my head down what kind of testiomy was that. You are a LIE girl you know you were at a club somewhere hangign out with your girls. Jessica gave the best testiomy and was sure of herself and knew where she were. Jessica is younger but speak more mature than Yanna. Bad choice with Yanna and Bad choice that Jessica didn't win.. She shows more of the Sunday best type that Yanna, Especilly when you talk of growing in the Lord!
Praise the Lord! you hit the nail on the head! To God be the Glory! and not one time did she say anything about God!
Two words: Sunday's Mess! Good points: Donald & Co. killed. Looked nice, sounded great! Great presentation! BeBe & CeCe did a good job as well. Good to see Buster & Shavoni. Hope they bring some of their magic back to the industry. They killed the game in the late 90's - early 2000's. Mediocre: The two finalist selections were okay. I've heard them better. Maybe they were just vocally tired since they did all this in two weeks. Bad points: From the beginning when the finale show started you can tell who the winner was going to be. When Kirk sent them to the car, who was in the driver's seat? Then the speech that Kirk gave Jessica after her performance, was a speech you would give to the loser. So I wasn't surprised of the outcome. We all kinda knew from the beginning who was going to win this. "Can't you stand the rain" had some good points with vocal acrobatics from each, but it went down the toilet towards the end with a lot of screamin' and I really couldn't understand the message of the song. It just reminded me of the R&B version. Kirk and the marching band! Why? What was the point? You did that at the Stellars a few years ago....STOP! THE MAIN BAD POINT: Because it was pre-tapped, I couldn't feel a thing. You know how you watch American Idol or some other reality show with a build-up of excitement. Didn't feel none of that here. And the two contestants didn't either. The conclusion was weak. You can tell everyone was waiting on the director to say "Cut, let's do the next take." The new single was nice. Reminded me of the song Fantasia did when she won. Tired of seeing those fake choirs in the background. Overall, BET, Fo Yo Soul and whoever else need to take heed to the messengers (your viewers) and re-group, re-focus and re-vamp next season. Think I'm done.
Also, Yanna had tattoos all over her body. UGLY!! not taking care of the lords temple. Also her dress looked liked she was out on a saturday afternoon getting reay for a Bar-b-Que. Please help her with her dressing. Jessica very pretty and classy. Always dressed as if she was on her way to church.. better yet she presented herself well for her to be a youn girl. HOLD YOUR HEAD UP JESSICA, I LOT OF PEOPLE OUT HER LOVE YOU AND YOU DID A GREAT JOB AND SHOULD HAVE WON!! BEBE AND MARY MARY KNOW THAT HAS WELL.. if they didn't she should have just looked at Yanna appreance.
Congratulations Yannie. I thought all the shows in which you sang and made the folks feel your message were incredible!! For those of you that enjoy the judgemental aspects of life, may you cast the first stone. Everyone has done things in their lives that one “may” regret ever doing!!!. However, “it is what it is” go Yannie! I am so proud of you. Jessica, I am proud of you too! P.S. I know there is something in everyone’s closet that is not admired by all. Think about it!!! To God Be the Glory — Ladies, you both will continue to serve the Lord no matter what your critics may think or say… God Bless
Jessica will not have to worry about anything, Maybe they will sign both just like last year. the runner up CD came out before the winner, and I did notice how Y'anna had that look on her face to say you already know I won. Jessica will still be crying today, knowing all that she's been thru and she still have Joy! She is the true meaning of the sond Tramine Hawkins sings" "Never lost my Praise"
To Sunday Best please go back to Season 1 style for season 3. And please please look for the singer who's growing spitiual and not for show because that's all you picked with Yanna.. Suday best you should have voted Yanna Off and kept Latrice And Jessica. They were more sincere than what you have now. Yanna is cooky and tries to be sassy and out sing but it's not about you when you are singing for the lord you must be humbel. Yanna baby it's not abou you.. It's about the lord and you have to learn how to minister. I'm sorry I just didn't see anythig spiritual about this girl and I shocked that BeBe and Mary Mary who are suppose to be spirtual couldn't see this. This is a straight up weekend party chick who looked up and won. I can say one thing if she is not who she says she is and if she is not living the life style she's singing about GOD will reveal her. That's one man you can't fool are play with.
to Linda yes, we all have things in our closet but the differnce is when you choose to get up before man HAVE YOU BUSINESS IN LINE WITH THE LORD.. THIS IS A CLUB GIRL AND YOU KNOW IT!!!. First you work on your heart second you learn to speak the word and live it third change your appereance (clothing) and show that God lives in you.
JESSICA REEDY I CAN"T WAIT TO SEE YOU ON STAGE AND BUY YOUR CD... THANK YOU FOR THAT BEAUTIFUL VOICE.
you know what , my favorite was Latice Crawford of course but, unfortunately she was eliminated!! but, i'm happy for the my girl Yannie because just like everyone else, she had a story behind her praise!! but what really dissapoints me is that everyones paying attention to her tatoo but, i didn't really see anything wrong with it however on another note, i'm happy she won and first!!
We are not saying that there was anything wrong with her voice, her voice was not unique, just like they said in Season 1 to Sherry Addison, they do not see her out of the Church, well Yannie voice is a voice that you would hear on Sunday at Church, but! she does not have the annointing, and BE Be and Mary Mary saw that, that is why they were crying because they knew that the right person did not win! To those who recorded the show last night, go back and check out the expression on the Judges faces and Kirk, was not happy for her like they were with Crystal Aikens, you see how they reacted when Crystal came back and sang, all the judges were on their feet and so was Kirk, and Crystal sang herself happy, the annointing was on the girl singing her own song! and Yannie did not have that! When Jessica sang "I surrender all" she was happy. Well anyway I wish them both the best!
A RECAP OF WHAT I WROTE LAST NIGHT: Tgbtg May 10th, 2009 on 7:35 pm It is7:24pm EST, and I have just finished watching Y’anna sing at my church - First Baptist Church of Glenarden (Online). She was beyond awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She sang three songs: The Mary Mary song she sang on Sunday Best. “Grandma’s Hands” “It Ain’t Over” by Maurette Clark Brown What a wondeful performance, ministering, and annointing. I was so moved. What we have seen on Sunday Best was just a taste. As for Sunday Best, of course I will watch it tonight. But, after seeing Y’anna let loose . . . . . . She is the definitely the winner for me whether she is crowned the ewinner or not. I still say the final two competitors should have been her and Latice! After seein Y’anna tonight, there is no doubt she can bring it . . . . .No matter what she is singing. Gotta go now, Hezekiah Walker is about to perform!!!! http://www.FBCGlenarden.org WHAT I HAVE TO SAY TODAY: I enjoyed the show overall, but thought it was anticlimatic. Where was the true suspense and expression of joy? I am Happy with Y'Anna being the winner, but I have a feeling that this is the beginning of a new kind of life for Jessica. A life of purpose and praise for God. Congrats to Jessica!!! I was not feeling " Can You Stand the Rain". Coupled with the nightclub type dresses, the visible tatoos, and such, all I could think about was back-in-the-day with New Edition! I didn't think it was the best way to open the show. I have really enjoyed Kirk Franklin as host, but even he seemed a little "off" at the beginning. Donald Lawrence and Be Be and Ce Ce were great!!!!!!! So what that Y'Anna has been out there. Haven't we all, in some way or fashion??? I heard her testimony last night (online broadcast at my church. I am still mad at myself for not attending in person!) and I can relate. Basically, not listening to God and reaching a point where all I have is God and finally realizing I can do nothing and be nothing without him! I can ensure you that Jessica has probably been up in the club as well (and at the after party as well since she has a child at 20 years old). Who are we to judge either Y'Anna or Jesica? Next year, I would like to see a live finale. Also, perhaps different judges such as Fred Hammond, Kim Burell, Detrick Haddon, Shirley Ceaser, etc. Finally, I have to say that I enjoyed the entire season (I didn't have cable last year!). It was treat to see good gospel singing in a competion format. Thanks BET!
come on now people are are resorting to Talking about yanni's tattoos???? Now y'all know that is a shame... I to am a Jessica Reedy fan, bu i am VERY happy for Yanni beacsue i know it wa a long time comin and she totally deserves it. I just want to see God's will forfilled. Many blessings and prosperity unto her. Cant wait for the cd to drop. In my opinon the top 3 ladies (even Zeb as well) have all made it and all have a bright furture ahead of them! Can't wait to see what the furture holds for them all.
Hmmm, I doubt that the contestants have TIME to go out and pick out their own clothes for these shows. I would imagine the wardrobe is provided for them. So that goes back to the producers and how they want each contestant to be displayed. I think 'church people' have an uncanny knack for being more judgemental than the Lord himself. It never ceases to amaze me. Who can see inside a person's heart or their spirit to really know how they feel? (unless you have the gift of discernment) Let's lay low and just be happy for them both!
First of all, people are funny. Second of all, Y'anna was the people's choice. Let's not blame her for winning a prize. If people really didn't like her, they wouldn't have voted for her.
Please get over yourself! She looked tacky and a mess and there was no need for all the skin display. That has nothing to do with anybody's personal life or baggage!!!!!!!!!!!! Ron, your whole response made no sense!! I presume you are a cousin or family member that must be posting? Then got the nerve to be talking about sanctimonious judging when I don't believe you know ANYBODY on here privately outside of the commentary you read that's posted on this site each day. How funny. I didn't judge Y'Anna's personal life or her decision to get the tattoos. I believe that I am the same person that told somebody else not to judge her being a single mom of 2 kids....which is a whole 'nother topic. I also believe the Bible touches on the subject of lust and immodesty. So if you are going to have a problem with mine or other related comments, you need to take it up with God and His Word! Otherwise, spare us all of the extra diatribe. I just said they should've been covered up. It doesn't matter if it was her choice or that of a wardrobe stylists. A good stylist knows what would be befitting for a person's body shape and they didn't get it right last night. What's done is done.
AAAAAAAANNNNDDDD I think now is a good time to remind everyone of the GospelPundit.com HOUSE RULES, which can be viewed by clicking here: http://localhost/gospelpundit/house-rules. No one has gone overboard yet, but just a reminder... I've got my editing keyboard and I ain't afraid to use it! LOL Love y'all. Keep the edifying discourse coming... leave the extra-ness out. I wonder which label(s) will be signing these gals... Thoughts?
I am elated that Yanna Monique Crawley won. You're right Janice, people are so funny. And suspicious!!! To whoever asked "why she got in the driver's seat?"... uh... that's where I would go too.... but Yanna does have an aggressive personality. DUH! I hope there's a way for them to do a "live" finale or to at least see their "live" reactions to winning... like them sitting in a lounge with family and friends or something. But that would require them to explain their production schedule... dunno. I would have liked to see a good buck, a tear, a scream, a fall-to-the-knees... Regarding their attire, they were required to bring their own clothes. I think they all looked nice.
Tsk…Tsk! Interesting how the most sensitive of us are the first to jump all over others like rocks and glass houses. Point taken regarding my previous comment making no sense. Apologies for not being clearer and I’ll try to put future comments into the first person. My point was that too many of us tend to project our own issues onto others by calling them out particularly via assumptions regarding others lifestyle choices. Most of the time I believe it’s a defensive response attempting to fortify our own lack of faith. My understanding of these phenomena result from my having been there, thus I can usually recognize the pattern rather effortlessly. BTW, I am far from being a blood relative or friend of any of the competitors nor do I know these blessed women; just someone who was attracted to BET (after a very long boycott) after being moved by a YouTube video of Y’Anna Crawley singing “Grandma's Hands” Subsequently and by accident I stumbled across this blog and found EJ’s analysis quite interesting and decided to stay awhile. Almost immediately I was taken back by some of the personal biting comments reminiscent of envious or jealous behavior. Thus, I decided to weigh in with a few words intended as others have so eloquently written to remind us of our own frailties that too many times get in the way and seemed to distract us from helping lift these gifted ladies. As others have commented, the final winner was determined by those of us in the listening and viewing audience who choice to weigh in with our vote, meaning nothing more than the majority liked Y’Anna Crawley. It says nothing about how or what we (I) felt about Jessica Reedy other than since they were the two finalists the three judges must have felt they were the best two candidates. The rest is speculation, though interesting conversation (i.e. BeBe’s tears – remember he recently lost his father). I judge TaeKwonDo tournaments and though trained to deal with parents and those who don’t compete I continue to be amazed at how many of us project our selves and our issues onto the ambitions and hard work of others. Regarding the ‘sanctimonious judging’ reference, my comment was made in the light of reading a number of comments devoid of any certification of personal knowledge of either of these sisters’ life story or faith. In my life I attempt with many stumbles to use my interpretation of the Bible to strengthen my faith by building others up instead of tearing them down. What's most interesting is as my own faith is strengthened the less need I have to diminish or call out others. I believe one can very effectively critique and influence without resorting to personal and irrelevant attacks. As I have always emphasized to my children – You are always entitled to your opinion as long as you preface it with such, though the second you represent something as fact, you must substantively certify it. Back to the primary context of this blog. I wish to thank BET for “Sunday Best.” It via YouTube has attracted me, one who was turned off of BET programming years ago, back for at least a look-see. As I have mentioned in a previous post, many prayers to both Y’Anna and Jessica as they embark on journeys in an industry with a history of chewing folks up and spitting them out without a care in the world other than revenue and profit. Strength, confidence and trust in God are prerequisites for this journey! God Bless! Ron
Thanks EJ
All man, are the comments on here REAL? Can we be happy that someone has received a blessing? I am happy. Plus, we should be happy that both will be spreading the Gospel and touching someone heart. Be bless!
@EJ LOLLLLLLLLL AAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNDDDDD. Whew. okay. That's funny @Ron you are thorough and I love it. In terms of BeBe's tears, Sunday Best wrapped taping in March and Pop Winans died in April. I'm just saying....it certainly shows a 'kinder, gentler' side of Benjamin Jerome Winans.
@Byron--i did know about the contestants bringing all their outfits for the earlier shows, but didn't the top5 get makeovers and get new clothes? Curious?
@luvgoodsangin - thanks for the correction. Hopefully it didn't nullify my point.
GOSPEL SHOWCASE 2009, COLUMBUS GA MAY 16, 2009
I'm loving these comments, folks! If it's anyone's first time on the site, WELCOME!
@EJ--Gotta tell you THANKS for giving my boy Floyd some props!!!! I'm not sure about the tour but I can surely tell you where you can hear him in person. The word 'talent' does not even begin to describe the gifts God has given him. I am so glad you clarified how the taping went, but....I needed somebody to go into the ugly cry. I wanted to see a Fantasia-like American Idol moment where somebody goes into a shout. Live show or not just for the chance to have someone call my name out as the winner. I would have torn that stage up. They would've had to wait for me to calm down to remind me it was just a practice taping. Oh well!
@Tamarra--RIGHT! I am with you on that!
Gonna keep it as short as possible: D Lawrence Killed. CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN??? Some disagreed with it because some used to “sin” while the original version was played, yet I really understood the meaning and how it could be a gospel song. Y'anna Crawley Although she was noticeably hoarse this girl still came out and was like “This is me take this”! “Remember the little engine that could…” Bebe said nothing about her vocals, he just said, “You are gorgeous,” I died I was like spirit of lust come out!!! Just playing y’all! Some of the messages I received read “Fye Fye Fye luv ha,” “How you say I can contact her,” “She ok, but my girl Jessica gonna take it,” in the words of Ryan Seacrest, Y’Anna, America voted, and you are safe!!!! Jessica Ready She sounded ok, but I felt nothing. I was hosting a watch party and we were all bored...even the Jessica fans. I think in Bebe's case the domestic charges made him cry. The words that were sang not so much as who sang them or how they were delivered. The Promise Those words will send you in for real. No lie, I’m at work right now and I’m on the verge! I’m going to buy it and she will go far. Advice on the Show Teach Tina the correct way to bury someone. Thank God MaryMary is a singing group and not a mortuary, this woman said, “You murdered our song. You ‘kilt’ it, put it in the grave, shut the casket, put it in the ground.” Maybe she just needs to go to a funeral or something but I have never known anyone to put someone in the grave, shut the casket, and then put them in the ground. I’m just saying. Do not allow the Judges to tell the competitors “You are my Sunday Best,” that is discouraging and kind of a slap in the face to the others competing. HAVE A LIVE FINALE!!! We (the home viewers) would like to see the reaction of the winners. That does wonders for us.
1 more thing: Gwen STOP IT!!!! People are talking about tattoos and things of that nature, I have two tattoos, and I know I am a child of God! Y'Anna owned it from the beginning. I loved Latice, Dontavius, Audrey Lewis, and Kalind, but they couldn't touch Y'Anna. Jessica only made it this far because she has a contemporary sound that MaryMary liked. If you truly followed the show, you would know that Bebe told Y'Anna "You are my kind of singer," "In my opinion, you are Sunday Best." They are called facts...pay attention to them!!! Thanks!
Whew lots of comments! I agree with the comments made about the show... The judging of others y'all can keep it. I am so disappointed to see some of these hurtful comments. None of us have a heaven or hell to put them in so we just need to stop. @ej Thanks for reminding us of policy @ron just thank u The finale was not like season 1 no tears no Real emotion. Just ehhhh. Mediocre
say what you want and try to make Yanna look good but she looked a HOT MESS!..And Yea jessica had a baby at 20 just like a lot more but at least she didn't have 2 and still single(Yannie). But all in all the she yelled to much and if you felt something then good, but if someone is yelling at you you can't help but to fell something. We all need to learn how to be ministed to and that's what Jessica Did. For all of you who likes all the yelling and falling out which is ENTERTAINMENT you a just getting a spiritual high that is temporal, learn how to be ministed to with something that will last.
Sure you right! Tie!
I have one thing to say.... PROOFREAD!
I'm kinda interested in what was Kirk & the judges reaction to the win. Something tells me that Tina sounded off behind-the-scenes because we know she was a Jessica fan clearly. I have yet to see one congratulatory message from them via Twitter/Myspace/Youtube Vlog and they use all 3 outlets regularly.
@Mason-----are you singin in the Gospel Showcase? @highly favored---I am with you ALL DAY @luv2lissen--too funny!
@Keish---interesting. Does anyone have any insight into the MaryMary Concert at the Birchmere in VA last month? I hear d they called Y'anna onto the stage with them, but before she got going good they took the mic back from her and said 'this is our show'. Any validity to that? Anyone?
@Tie 1. The name of the show, oh by the way on the Black Entertainment Television network, is "Sunday Best," not "Sunday Dress." I think the dress issue has been previously addressed on this board. 2. I for one would like to understand what your point about having 2 babies and being single is and how it relates to this or any singing competition? 3. Hmmm, would you include Aretha Franklin in that same as you say "yelling" category. How would you describe what the Baptist preacher is doing at the end of his/her sermon? Getting to the point I'm really interested in what your definition of "ministering" is. Curious in Christ, Ron
@luv2lissen. i'm about to lay out because of your domestic charge comment. LORD!!! I had thought the same thing.... but I don't believe those charges for one minute. It's been said a friend of his passed away and the hymn was the friend's favorite song. Ahhh. So good to know that there are other cerebral crazies in the world.
I love it how there are so many psychiatrists, social psychologists and behavior analysts on gospelpundit! Whoever it was that said Mary Mary and BeBe were crying because they knew the right person hadn't been chosen... A-MAZING "insight." Whoever said BeBe was crying because of his domestic charges... A-MESS-ING. You psychological health professionals have PEERED into Yanna and Jessica's pasts, SCRUTINIZED their life choices, READ into tattoo's, GAZED into attire choices, and OGLED into their spiritual lives and INSPECTED their anointings!!! A-MUSING. And after all that.... Congrats, Y'anna!!!!
Not this time but there will be a former entry from Sunday's best on Saturday 5/16/09 in Columbus Civic Center performing in all his glory!!! Thanks!
I'm just amazed at "the people". Like i said before i'm happy for all the contstants and wish them much success. @certain people i think we should be careful and mindful of what we say and how we say it becasue past contestants and prolly even jessica nad yani may read these comments. And i disagree with the statment that Jessica's perforamce was bland and "unspirt filled". I think she and the whole performance were very anointed. I was on facebook the other day and a few professional gospel artist and singers were expressing there frustration (via status updates) about how people in the kingdom tear each other down and are sooo quick to put there mouths on people, on sites such as youtube and other forums and places you can comment. I'm just sayin.
Some of the comments that were posted were downright distasteful. America chose the winner. ..Yanna Crawley. Lets get over it! How about praying that God will strengthn Yanna in this journey. Stop the bashing and haterade folks. Which one of us have never sinned in our lives?
WOW! @ Byron you are so on point!. Let me say this. There is a way to say ANYTHING. But sometimes if you have no idea what in the world you are talking about, it's better to say NOTHING. May I remind you, TIE, that when Paul was on his WAY to persecute more Christians is the time the Lord stopped him in his tracks because he had a purpose to use him? I said that to say this: We were all once filthy, unholy, and sinful. God chose (reminder, HE CHOSE) to put his HOLY spirit in us and save us by dying WHILE WE WERE YET SINNERS... (meaning that's who we actually were by nature) So if Y'anna or Jessica or anyone else is not as highly spiritual and mature as you think they should be, how do you know that this is not part of their "Damascus" experience? God used cursing Peter, persecuting Paul, and even lying ME to minister to his people. If you will be honest, there were some gray areas still left when you got saved. There are still things we deal with and giving them all to God is still a process. When you get done with that process, you certainly won't be commenting on Gospel Pundit 'cuz you'll 'hopefully' be in glory! Stop being judgmental, and please don't think I am only talking to you, though you were the most negatively vocal on this post. The gifts and the calling of God is WITHOUT repentance, that's just a reminder, doesn't mean they haven't actually repented. God can CHOOSE and USE whom he will. Interestingly, it's usually those whom we least expect, and I love that about HIM! BODY OF CHRIST, STAND UP!
After all is said and done, Y'anna Crawley is Sunday Best whether you like it or not! Yes, she has two children and is single, so what?! Whether you have 1 or 10 it doesn't say how many times fornication was committed. People get so caught up in diagnosing the problem, that we seem to look over trying to find a solution. No wonder so many people run away from the church, it beacause of "church folks" with their little judgemental selves and carnal minds! Grow up and mature in Christ! If we check some of the persecutor's backgrounds as it relates to premarital sex, I wonder how many would be a "Mary" so because you didn't caught does not give you the right to point at someone else. He that is without sin cast the first stone. I'm waiting, and I better not see a rock fly!
This competition proves that you have to have a traditional gospel voice to win ‘Sunday Best’. It a shame, if you has a different style that folks are quick to judge (she need be sing in the club or that's not gospel). Gospel is the teaching of Jesus Christ, nothing more nothing less. Last I heard, Gandma Hands was a blues song and blues came from gospel music along with R&B, Jazz and Rocking Roll. I’m glad, at least, we got to see a little more of Jessica and Latice and we will see more of them in the future along with Dontavies and Zeb. However; Y’anna you did your thing, you have a wonderful gift, congrats. Keep praising God.
honestly, i really think that we should not be on here criticizing either one of them, Y'Anna or Jessica. I believe that both ladies have great voices and i really don't think that anyone should be on here talking about their flaws. None of us are perfect and we all have problems and issues. This competition could have been an open door to help both Y'Anna and Jessica with some of their problems and establish a relationship with God that neither of them might not have had before. Nobody should be casting stones, for we aren't in a position to judge anybody. This is just my opinion.
@ r.ford that is not true. Last season Shari Addison was very traditional and she did not win. This competition proved that you have to be the best to be Sunday Best!
How can someone's voice be traditional. That makes absolutely no sense at all. A person'd voice is their voice. If you remember Shari Addison sang a range of songs, including "Living My Life Like It's Golden" By WHO??? My GIRL Jill Scott!!! Come on ya'll. We gotta stop putting genres on people's voices. Her style was definitely versatile. I will say that we as black people need to step out of what we call "sanging" and know that there is a bigger music world out there than the sounds we create. Food for thought. G
@luv2lissen - I agree w/ you. Last season, Tina told Shari that she couldn't see her outside the church (they even ran that clip back in season 2 auditions when one of the older ladies auditioned). I know b/c I was a fan of Shari's and they saw Chrystal as a more versatile singer. Also, Chrystal could sound churchy and not sound churchy. Both of them are the bomb in my book though, so you can't say that the winner had to sound traditional gospel, b/c that wasn't what Crystal was in Season 1. According to r.ford's theory, Shari would have won. @EJ-to answer your question, I can see them both being w/ Verity simply b/c Shari and Crystal was signed with them(right?). Might be different though w/ all the hype. I can't wait for some CD's to drop though from Y'anna and Jessica and Latice and......you get my point -lol.
Gospel music like most genres is an evolving art form. This controversy has been around since the beginning and as long as we continue to be uncomfortable in our own skins will remain with us. Rather than summarizing, I recommend IMHO an excellent essay on this topic written by Karima Hayes in 1992 for Ebony Magazine, entitled "The gospel controversy; are the new songs too jazzy and too worldly?" ( http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1077/is_n5_v47/ai_11840206/ ) The same concepts and issues apply to dialogue on this board regarding voice and singing style(s). Peace, Ron
@Mason---ummm, are you permitted to tell us who this 'former entry' is?
I want all of us to start proofreading for spelling and gramatical errors, and please just for me get the contestants name right!
@luv2lissen---yes!!!!! Latice Crawford, Jessica Reedy, and Y'anni Crawley. C'mon people! LOL
@luv2lissen I hear you, though I'm assume this is a non-professional blog where comments are accepted from anyone with something to say. Of course there are certain constraints to "keep it real" and to act as a disincentive to behaviors that scare people away. According to Toni Morrison, it takes her about 4 hours to compose one professional quality essay paragraph. I for one and I suspect many others don't have the time to iterate through all the Expository Writing 101 learned draft-edit cycles required for high quality written dialogue. The language I've seen expressed on the board is relatively easy to decompose even with the typos. I suspect other than encouraging those with access to a spelling checker to use it (as you appropriately have), anything more rigorous may act as a disincentive for people to say what they have to say. Peace, Ron
yeah, let's just check our work before posting?
LOL Y'all just WANNA disagree now. Are we talking about grammar and spellin', or are we talking about my fun, made-with-love recap? BACK TO THE SUBJECT-- we're all agreed that we're glad for Y'Anna and proud of Jessica... both ladies will do well, by God's sovereign calling and grace, and we will pray for them in their ministry endeavors, right? Anything else???
@Ron, you're an English master, huh? You're AT LEAST a rhetorician or a linguist!!! That little paragraph you wrote just gave me the most unusual joy. Thanks.
@EJ. Excuse me for liking that LOL. Your re-cap has been great. And I'm TRULY enjoying the "Confession" post. Keep it up, Mr. GP. Great work~!
@luv2lissen , @gwill and @ebonisun Listen, what I'm saying is not a theory or synopsis, it's my opinion. By traditional gospel, I mean, you can go in most black churches and found a Y'anna Crawley or Crystal Akins; however, you can't going into a black church and find a Jessica, Latice or Dontavies, gospel music hasn't seen the likes of them yet. I believe Crystal and Shari are BOTH traditional. I like both singer, I also like Y'anna I believe she is going to do well in gospel music and I will be buying her CD. However; my point is that the America people will vote for a traditional gospel voice 9 out of 10 times.
Congrats Yanna its your time..... !!!!!!! Now moving forward........ Let's see a Male win next year!!! YAAAAY!!!!! :)
I know I'm late on these comments, but I echo the sentiments about being disappointed in the overall finale. I am a HUGE Sunday Best fan - couldn't wait for Season 2! I was so excited last year to have a primetime Gospel singing contest where you could hear such wonderful talent and feel such powerful anointing! This year was a very different experience, and I was soooo disappointed in the finale. The taped endings don't work, and the contestants and the viewers deserve the full course! I must say, I really appreciated Jessica's purity and sincerity in every presentation. Every time she stepped on stage, she made me a believer! She will go far, and I wish Y'Anna a happy and successful career. BET, live finale please for Season 3! And no "single from the first album for the winner"....uuugggh!
@Shilon: welcome welcome welcome and please come back often often often. you're never "late" at GospelPundit.com. that's the beauty of it! :-) i didn't have cable last year (hmph!), so i only saw the first season via web clips. but i've heard a lot of people comparing this season to last season and being really disappointed. you didn't like y'anna's single, though??? oh, and @r. ford: i agree with you. a lot of people on the internet-- here and elsewhere-- knocked Jessica for not having a more "traditional" voice... they said that "Sunday" Best means churchy. i disagreed, but i definitely agree that the viewers' perception was that the voice should translate well to a traditional Sunday morning worship service.
Thanks for the welcome EJ...really appreciate it. That comment wasn't about the single itself - I thought the single was fine. I'm talking about how they did it. It lacked all of the sincerity and authenticity that I loved about Season 1. And when Kirk announced that she was going to do a single from her first album, it just caught me off guard. I felt like I had been watching and anticipating the whole season, and that I had been duped. I mean, I can still see Crystal Aiken when they announced her as the winner, tears streaming down, sooo thankful and humbled, and all of that. So I'm not slamming Y'Anna's single...I'm sorry if it came off like that...just want them to go back to the way they did it last year. It was so powerful and is a part of what I love about the Sunday Best experience.
@Shilon: nah, it didn't seem like you were slamming it at all. Just thought maybe it wasn't your stylistic cup-of-tea cuz not everybody liked it. I def. hear u about the differences in the seasons.
I was disappointed with the anti-climatic finale as others especially after realizing the entire season was compressed into two weeks, although it's understandable that acquisition of judging and hosting commitments for longer and live engagements would be extremely difficult to acquire. It helps explain the stress of exhaustion, hoarseness, the judge’s rollercoaster emotions and lack of that spontaneous spirit or “holy ghost” in the house. That said it appears as an outsider a highly probable net win-win in the BET publicity department, the advertisers, the finalists, host, guest artists and judges were they propose and schedule a live finale as many have suggested and let the chips fall where they may. It would be quite illuminating to know what "Sunday Best" proposal and economic analysis was pitched to the BET executives? Is BET blowing advertising revenue, increased viewership and an opportunity to reinforce its rebranding efforts to reach broader segments of a diverse black community by not scheduling a live finale? I didn't understand the "car" prize - what was that about or did that fly entirely over and past my head? Was this some sort of "bling" symbol appealing to one of a number of stereotypes or nothing more than the result of limited choices to acquire advertising revenue to pay for the program? Finally, since the audience decides the winner, which trashes whatever criteria the judges used to determine the finalists, I suggest beginning next season in a live finale to formally offer both finalists recording contracts to maintain the credibility of peer review. Simultaneously to acknowledge the public vote award the winner a personal cash prize and an additional award towards an effort of his/her choosing within the symbolic sphere of “Sunday Best.” Just my 2cents. Ron BTW - (a) @Byron - not English master, rhetorician, nor linguist, but rather a technologist who enjoys watching and assisting when possible others to achieve their childhood dreams. (b) Correction from previous my comment - "According to Toni Morrison, it takes her about 4 hours to compose one professional quality essay page," not paragraph. Apologies for the typo.
Hey EJ and all something has been bothering me, and on the way to work this morning, I decided I would discuss it here. I was thinking I cheated Jessica Reedy. I was gonna say "we" but decided to say "I" because I voted for Y'anna. I really like her style, her voice, her heart and all that, so I am not at all taking anything away from her or her victory. Please here that... but I keep getting flashes of some of Jessica's story and how she was so sincere and grateful. Her performances of God Has Smiled On Me, I Won't Complain and I Surrender All, really told her story. She grew into a woman, and she even said she now knows her purpose and knows she has a responsibility to live with integrity. She also said when she leaves there she was going to through herself so far in to the Word of God and find out more about Him. WOW. I wasn't necessarily expecting that answer. I thought she was going to say, she was going to find herself, or get more in tough with the gift God has given her. But everything she said connected with the Worship Leader in me. So now I feel like I clicked the wrong button, not because Y'Anna's not good, but because Y'Anna's growth didn't necessarily take form right in front of our eyes. I think she is a professional, and that's needed and important. But something that came from Jessica's heart reached mine. What a great thing it is to find your purpose which is wrapped most times, inside your gifting. I am so happy that she found hers. I pray she can go back to school if that's her desire and be what she has always dreamt to be. Jessica, don't be afraid that you have lost time. Here is the promise of our God to you: Joel 2:23-27 Be glad, O people of Zion, rejoice in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains in righteousness. [e] He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. 24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats will overflow with new wine and oil. 25 "I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten— the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm [f]— my great army that I sent among you. 26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you; never again will my people be shamed. 27 Then you will know that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed. Blessings! Anybody else feel the same way? Holla... G
bunch of drama majors on here I see. LOLOLOL much love fam!
Some of the bloggers on here aren't playing. I need a praying church! LOL. I am so glad that GOD has the final word! Congrats Y'Anna! You voice is awesome! God has truly blessed you a special gift. I love how you present a song. The gospel industry is blessed with another unique powerful singer. Can't wait for you CD release! Small request......."Grandma's Hand's" please! :-) Jessica, you are a blessing! I recognized your gift from the beginning! Your passion for CHRIST shines thru! A blogger from another site called you the "Quite Storm" I can't say it any better then that! That low register you have is the truth! The way you breath brand new life to traditional songs. Small request for your CD......."God Has Smiled On Me", "Just As I Am" or.......any song from the show! LOL @EJ - I needed SOMEbody to fall out! I can't stop laughing! Also, Jessica Greene's interview is teriffic! @gwill - Say that! BET - the pre-recorded finally just ain't natural!!!!!!!!! Be Blessed!
@Mea: thanks for your support and welcome to the site!
What do you think about an alternative proportional voting system for the finale that equally factors in voter preferences of those who strongly support both finalists by increasing the numerical range from 2 to for example 5? In such a system each voter receives 5 points to distribute any way they see fit (0-5, 1-4, 2-3, 3-2, 4-1, 5-0) between the two finalists. The winner is still the finalist who receives the most points. Each voter is still forced to specify their primary choice while simultaneously reflecting their preference for the other contestant. The contestant whom voters strongly supported would still win and the system gains integrity from voter’s belief that their true feelings were registered. LOL Ron
Just want to say CHURCH FOLK, always looking down on someone. That's why alot of people don't attend church today. Church Folk, people that go to church every sunday, don't miss a sunday. Think they're holier than thou, Church Folk, so judgemental. But it takes more than just filling in a seat. Who are we to judge. Congrats Yanna!!!!!! I wasn't even voting for her but still she did a wonderful job. Wasn't my pick but I still liked her as well. I thought the finals should have been Latese or Yanna. But God bless the all. It wasn't about what they had on, If you had your heart in the right place then you wouldn't have taken notice of everything else, but the words that were being ministered.

I had no idea the show is recorded in 2 weeks. I wondered about that. No wonder so many were so hoarse! Now Im mad @ the judges for saying "when performing there will be tiems when you're hoarse & u've just got to pull through". NOT WHEN YOU HAVE TO SING EVERY DAY FOR 2 weeks ! MaryMary ,Bebe, & Kirk all know that when they schedule their on tours they dont overschedule themselves so that there voices dont get shot. This was a great disservice to all the contestants. That said I really thought that Jessica was gonna win bc I feel she gotta better comments. Plus she has that nice baritone (bottom is what Kirk called it) Im glad Yanna won.
FIRST OF ALL I THINK BOTH SUNDAY BEST CONTESTANTS JESSICA REEDY AND Y'ANNA CRAWLEY DID GREAT.....BUT I THINK JESSICA REEDY SHOULD HAVE WON TITLE S"UNDAY BEST" JUST BECAUSE I HEARD PEOPLE LIKE HER(Y'ANNA CRAWLEY) ALREADY AND JESSICA WAS VERY UNIQUE WITH HER'Z AND HER BOTTOMZ WERE RIDICULOUS......I WAZ VERY UP SET..BUT IT IZ WAT IT IZ..I THINK Y'ANNA WAS VERY ORIGINAL AND PLAIN.. DONT GET ME WRONG SHE CAN BLOW BUT THERE'S OTHER I HAVE HEARD WITH THE SAME SOUND...AND I KNOW SOME OF YALL OUT THERE WANTED JESSICA TO WIN THE MOST JUST BECAUSE SHE WAS DIFFERENT AND UNIQUE!!! THANKS Y'ANNA FOR YOUR PERFORMANCE BUT PERSONALLY I THINK U JESSICA SHOULD HAVE ONE BECAUSE I THINK YOUR SUNDAYZ BEST!!!!!! GO MZ.REEDY!!!!! LOVE YA, KASMIR JONES
God timing is not our timing. Things work according to His will. Also remember that two men may join the body of Christ at the same time but each walk at a different pace. I think 2nd is BEST as according Gods word: 1. Animal sacrafice to have sins forgiven(Old Testament) & Blood of Christ that washes sins away, for those that believe in Him, never to be remembered (Old Testament). 2. Esau & Jacob. The second son recieved his father's blessings. Pray my strength in the Lord, Quran
I totally agree, church people are always judging! Okay, she's been in the clubs and has tattoos! We all have been through something in our lives and if you haven't, then something is wrong with you. So what if Y'anna didn't say anything about God when she was asked what she was doing this time last year! The girl was still praising His name through song! She is anointed and it is truly a blessing that she won! Can't wait 'til her album comes out!
Come on everybody.....you can say what you want to...how you want to say. ..and how you get others to agree...but Ms. Crawley won..this young lady can sing...she is annoited. Ms. Crawley does not have a coach to train her to do what she does. I am not being mean on any won..but Jessica she has to be trained to sing higher pitch songs...come on now...anybody can sing songs in a lower key and in a jazzy display. She was just not ready for the scene..and tell me this why...did they gave her all the not so excited songs to sing...if the tables was switched and Jessica had to sing Encourage Yourself or some of the other songs Latrice and Y'anna had to sing Jessica would have made a mess of it...so be careful,,,just b/c you can sing I'm still here in the shower like jessica...please stop drinking the HATER-AID! GOD BLESS AND RECOGNIZE

@Weezzy7, This is a classy debut. Feinstein's is a very nice, intimate room and not cheap!
Although I live in the UK, I got to see Melinda Doolittle live in Nashville almost exactly two years ago. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I just wish I could make it to Feinstein's this next week, but sadly that is just not possible. If you can get to New York don't miss the opportunity.
I thought both ladies were great but I still think Jessica Reed should have won
I think Jessica Reed was good. She had her own style and she made the songs feel very unique.I do music, and she can make it in Gospel or R&B.
i am from the D.C. area and have always been a fan of Yanni's...the crazy thing is that the people that are making comments are god fearing people...LOL...are you serious!!! you'll don't have nothing better to do but critize her...i wish i was a fly on the wall too see some of the corrupt things you'll do and say
