I don’t even RECOGNIZE this top 5 anymore. I’ve been so used to seeing Mary Mary at #1 and Donnie McClurkin, Israel Houghton and WOW Gospel bouncing around at #3, #4 or #5. The #2 slot has seemed consistently changing, depending on whose album just came out (i.e., Kerry Douglas, Coko, Da’ T.R.U.T.H.), but things are different now.
Mary Mary remain on top this week, but Earnest Pugh’s new project, Rain On Us, debuted at the #2 slot. I was bit surprised by that cuz I didn’t see as much promo for it as some of the other new albums, but congrats to ya, doc! He’s a singin’ somebody (and a pretty nice guy, too).
Lee Williams & The Spiritual QC’s newest project, Fall On Me, debuted at the #3 spot. Of all quartets, I think they’re prolly my favorite, but I REALLY wasn’t checkin’ for them this time around… kinda didn’t know an album was even coming out.
Israel’s The Power Of One takes #4 and the compilation album from Kerry Douglas rounds out the top 5.
So, two debuts in the top 5. Hopefully, they’ll remain up there next week (y’all know how I feel about albums that debut in the top 5, then drop to less than #25 by week 2… turn to your neighbor and say “megachurch”).
Do you all have any/all of these albums? Whatd’ya think of ‘em???

EJ, I am very surprise of the #2 status because I made the attempt to purchase Earnest Pugh cd last week and this week, none of the main music stores had the cd in stock, not because of overwhelming sales either. I had to purchase the cd online for delivery. Now I must say from what I've heard, the cd sounds really nice. Who is Kerry Douglas?
well since you've said it before EJ, Earnest DOES attend a mega church so maybe that is the reason for the #2 slot. Maybe they did a major push for his congregation to buy up product. We'll see how it does next week. Just a thought... he's a friend so i'm happy for him either way.
unrelated to the topic, cause I don't have any of these CD's. Just wanted to say thanks for all the info you share - and the pundit player is great. Keep up the good work EJ, we're listening.
Does it matter who bought the CD, it can be his church home, his neighborhood or the Kids nin the Club, A Sale is a Sale! Who wouldn't be Smart and Push their CD in there Church especially if they attend a Church like Ebenezer, with 8,000+ Members!!! I just want to take this time to Congratulate Earnest Pugh for his #2 Debut, I could care less who bought the CD and from where! He Deserves This...Thanks!
Agreed James. Just to clarify, EJ mentioned in a previous post (discussing another artist) how some artists who attend mega churches get big boost in first week sales. So I was just bringing that back to his attention since he said he was surprised due to lack of promotion. That's all... no hate here. I agree, a sale is a sale. I think its great that churches support their own. Something is wrong if they dont. But I was just stating a possibility for the great entry week for Pugh. That's all.
I have not purchased Earnest Pugh's cd, but I really like the title track, "Rain On Us". I do plan to purchase the Kerry Douglas Gospel Mix cd which is a compilation cd that features James Fortune, Niyoki , Bryan Courtney Wilson and others. Douglas is the publisher of the Gospel Truth Magazine.
Why would anyone be surpised about someone who sings for God? Earnest Pugh has a highly annointed voice and as James Murphy stated "He deserves this" !!!!! Earnest Pugh has been doing a great work in the Kingdom, musically, for a long time. These are accolades that are well deserved and overdue. To God be the glory! Congrats Earnest the Cd is amazing. I will definitely promote this wherever I go!!!
I guess the Goodness and Good News is "Shocking" to Some...I guess there are still a few who Still BOX JESUS IN as if he is not Limitless!
As a DC gospel music lover and Earnest Pugh fan I too can say that it's Pugh's time! Stop hating, folk. EJ is incorrect with his comment about seeing less promotions on the Earnest Pugh CD. I have received more Eblasts promoting Pugh's release than CoKo, Sheri Jones Moffet or Melinda Watts. In addition, he is the ONLY one of the July released albums that has been on the Billboard Radio Chart. Do your research. To this day Sheri or Coko is received the radio or Television exposure the Pugh is receiving so its fitting and proper for him to be in the #2 slot. In addition, he is video "Rain On Us" is on BET, The Word Network, and 4 formats with Gospel Music Channel. It seem to me that EJ is giving the female artist more love than our homie..but even with this lack of love from gospelpundit he is YET killin everyweekend. The more you talk the higher he will go. DC Gospel Lover!
@Lamar Taylor: thanks for visiting and for your comments. It's clear that you're a supporter of Earnest Pugh's ministry, as am I. Just to clarify-- I have featured Earnest Pugh several times on this site and have, at all times, expressed appreciation for his ministry and his gift. http://localhost/gospelpundit/tag/earnest-pugh/
This is hilarious. Clearly, people hear only what they WANT to hear. aint nobody hatin on this blog. But its understandable. People get defensive when you talking about their friends. hopefully they extend the same grace to every other artist out there.
Did I miss something? WOW, I agree with Jonny, ppl can twist some stuff up. My Earnest Pugh cd finally arrived from my online purchase. It's a good cd, now I am ready for Sheri JM cd.....
