Im witcha on that EJ!! This was an awesome group of singers!! One of my favorite songs by them is "Yes"....I dont think they recieved their just due..Whatever happend to them?
I'll Trust You was one of my favs. Some of their best writers, F. Darnell Davis and Tanabe Gaitlin are still making hits. F. Darnell Davis has his own group, The Remnant. They don't sound like Excelsior, they have another distinct sound. Tanabe can be found on his church choir's cd, Father Charles Hayes & Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer right in Chicago.
Isn't Excelsior was still together? After "Soul Interpretations," they released "The Promise" (around 2005) independently and "In His Hands" on Alliant in 2006. So, I assumed that they were just on a normal break of about 1-3 years between recordings.
I know that Darnell Davis has formed The Remnant. But, Excelsior released "In His Hands" after Darnell Davis left the group. And even though other writers and producers in the group took over for that album, they still sound just as good.
By the way, the two post-Verity discs are definitely worth checking out. I think they would be worthy additions to your collection; they're classic Excelsior. (I just about wore out "In His Hands" after it was released!)
One more thing, "The Promise" disc is really good, too. To me, the disc is worth buying just to get the song "Awesome."
I had to shout when I first heard them sing it (and almost every other time too)! It's a very powerful song. Was listening to it on the crowded subway one day... Almost had to leap and praise Him right then, even though there was no space... Was like fire shut up in my bones!
I live in Minnesota---and know Bobby Joe Champion who founded and leads the group. They are still performing and Bobby Joe (who is also an attorney) is now a
Minnesota State representative!
Nope EJ -- you are not alone. I absolutely LOVED Excelsior. I still pop in their stuff periodically. I believe I listened to "Soul Interpretations" almost non-stop for an entire summer after I got it.
I know for a fact Excelsior is still around as I am a member... Matter of fact we just had a gig last night... Continue looking for our music, check us out on Facebook and Myspace, oh and if you don't have the latest album ,"In His Hands"... GET it!
