I don’t think the gospel community acknowledges and appreciates Táta Vega like it could. Not because the industry is being rude… just cuz everyone doesn’t know about the musical treasure that she is.
The entire WORLD knows her voice– she’s the singing voice of Shug Avery in the classic film The Color Purple (remember her singing ”Speak Lord” and “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)”?!).
But before she did THAT, she was a well-known lead vocalist with Andraé Crouch. She’s got a whimsical performance style and a voice like none other… the only similar contemporary vocalist that comes to mind is Ledisi, in that they both use their entire EXISTENCE to interpret a song, a line, a note… and give you what’s there.
She’s released several solo projects and has provided background vocals for everyone from Michael Jackson and Chaka Khan to Madonna and Stevie Wonder. You MIGHT have also heard her lead vocals recently on Kirk Whalum’s Gospel According To Jazz Chapter II (“El Todopoderoso”) or Andraé Crouch’s Mighty Wind album (“I Was Glad”).
I couldn’t decide between two videos I wanted to post, so you’re gettin’ both of ‘em.
The first is Táta Vega singing with Andraé Crouch on the classic song “Right Now”:
The second video features Táta singing “Until Jesus Comes”:
Sooooooooo… whatd’ya think?!

Thanks EJ for opening up that treasure box. I have seen TaTa performed live with Andre and she is a powerhouse with a unique voice. The sister is incredible and I wish she was recognized more for her contribution to the music industry. One thing about Andre, he always surrounded himself with fabulous voices and I would add Howard Smith to the list. By the way, where is Howard Smith? Detective EJ, please get on this!
Ummm. Yeah. You hit it on the head. Tata Vega is so underrated and under-appreciated. I think we forget that once upon a time people were cast in singing parts because they could actually sing (and not be carried by a voice over artist). We glance over the talent not realizing that it's just a slice of that artist's true gift. Background vocalist are also easily forgotten, especially if they sing behind a giant in the industry. I never considered comparing Tata Vega to Ledisi--but yeah, I see that. Her voice is almost one that is made for not only the ears, but the eyes. She is a performer. I enjoyed watching her in these vids. Thanks for the lesson.
Sing it Tata!!!
I love Tata Vega
So did she just do the ROBOT on "Right Now"? And was that a finger-machine-gun she just pointed at the audience on the mid-vamp-special? LOL!!! Talent and insanity seem to be inseperable!!!!
Man EJ, you did us right with this one...I've always loved Tata Vega's vocal ability.."Right Now" was the song to listen for on Sunday morning's growing up! And let's not forget her sending us inn on "Oh It Is Jesus" CLASSIC!!!
