Kim Burrell’s tribute to Whitney Houston, which aired last night during the BET Honors program, was simply incredible.
She looked incredible, sounded great and had the entire audience mesmerized. It was really a great, classic moment. Almost as classic was Whitney’s MAJOR responses to the performance. LOL I love it!
In case you missed it, or even if you immediately played it back on DVR several times, go’n ahead and treat yourself:

She looked amazing and sounded even that much more amazing! I was in awe the WHOLE time
i enjoyed the performance...i was glad to see whitney so happy given the fact that the media always seems to catch her in the "not so good" moments. i wasn't fond of the dress, but not for the reasons discussed in the other thread (*rolls eyes*). once she gets used to this new frame, her clothing choices will improve (i hope).
I REALLLLLLYY enjoyed Kim Burrell last night. Judging from Whitney's response, Kim really encouraged her. I'm struggling with something though, towards the end of the song when Kim got loose. I just knew she was gonna interject Jesus in there some kind of way. I know she did her job. I'm not suggesting she didn't. I just felt like she was on the brink of something - I just wish gospel artist really stick to our job/calling. I mean even when Whitney gave remarks she said "Hallelujah" which said to me. I'm more than happy - I gotta praise Him. I love Kim B. She did a wonderful job. Overall, I believe she ministered in that setting. People were really touched. Kim keep on allowing the Lord to use you before ALL the world. The saints are covering you and supporting you in prayer - as secular doors open up for your ministry gift. I know when the camera's & lights are off - you really have the opportunity to go deeper.
@ PJ Jones, Amen!! given the amount of hatred lately by some and condeming her to hell by some posters, this is what she was called to do--ministering to others in the secukar world. She rocked it on last night and she looked great. God had a purpose for Kim, she showed those people and critics that you can get up and lose that weight and empower women to do the same, and that was her purpose for losing that weight. I salute her and I also join her in prayer too that God will open doors as with Mary Mary as they were taking part in the "We are the world" re make that God will open doors in other venues to share his gospel, in spite of opposition of Christians who do not understand that we are to share the gospel in places, even places people church folk do not approve of. I still love Kim and happy that she is sharing her gift to the world.
Kim did an excellent job last night!! I dont blame Whitney for her actions; I would have probably acted in a similiar matter had Kim Burrell sang to me!!
@Ray...It would be worse for me...lol
@Relationship Over Religion-- YOU are someone funny. I just needed to tell you that. LOL
Good singers who can roll out runs are a dime a dozen but great song stylists are very few. Kim is numbered among the few. I put her in the class of legendary stylists such as Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson and Carmen McCrae, just to name a few.
Kim tore it down. Period. Best performance of the night. Whitney's initally reaction was PRICELESS! Even Puffy was trippin by the end, lol. @ pjones - According to the Word of God, God is love. And Kim sang, "Love is the miracle that sets us free!" Yes, He is, Kim. Yes, He is! @ RoR - A diamonds role as a girls best friend has been replaced by Spanx, LOL! The style of the evening gown was nice and appropriate. All women should be mindful of when and how we choose to wear certain clothes...not just Kim. The clothes usually aren't bad...it's the way we choose to wear them and where we choose to wear them that is questionable.
@ v4c - you're absolutely correct. Yes, He is. I'm so glad that message is being shared. I hope the church get that message too!
Ms. Kim, I loved, loved, loved your tribute to Whitney. You were beautiful and as real as real could be. Your love , loyalty, sweetness, passion for the friendship, and fearlessness to be real was sooo impacting. I salute you. The love you shared freely, makes me want to tell my friends know how much I love really them too. It would be nice to see more artist, in the future, make the connection with the people they pay tribute to as you did. You were amazing. God bless you Ms. Kim. P lease be encouraged in whatever God has for you to do. Just as God can use gospel music to draw people to Him, he can use secular music too.
It was okay. Jennifer Hudson gave an incredible reading of "I Will Always Love You" afterwards. I'm not usually a fan of hers but she killed it too.
Jo Whitney's response to your tribute was stellar. There's no question that she loves you very, very much. The friendship that the two of you share is genuine, beautiful, and eternal. God bless you both.
I truly enjoyed Kim's performance!! And Whitney did as well. I really thought Whitney was going to get on stage with Kim. LOL (side note: J Hud has some major pipes!!
Kindly agree with several comments with regard to Kim's presence and performance, Whitney's genuinely jubilant celebration of Kim, and JHud's performance. The mainstream/secular society are getting a taste of what few of gospel music listeners already knew: the anointed fierceness of Kim Burrell. I will continue to pray and say that I hope Kim preserves her Lord-given gift and anointing and that she allows them to be used ONLY for good and not for evil. Peace.
i loved Kim's performance, but i wanted Whitney to SAT DOWN!!!
Kim's performance and look were incredible!!! She gave me chills...as you look on the faces of those in the audience they felt the same way! Even though she sang a secular song, she ministered to Whitney and showed her the love of God by letting her know she was there for her and how proud she was of her....believe it or not, that's true ministry!
@Ryan Chung lol I hear ya!
Oh my! Kim Burrell was absolutely incredible. She IS a true woman of God! She is a fierce woman of God! She rendered a message through her voice on the BET Honors. Church people probably were somewhat critical BUT kingdom citizens were amazed and delighted to see the trueness of God refected in her tribute to Whitney. If you ever had any doubt about the love of God through friendship, it is my prayer that you were encouraged by that reflection last night. God is calling the kingdom citizens out of the beautiful cathedral halls into the mainstream culture to carry His Word. The light is an illuminated reflection that serves it rightful purpose when it is shared in a dark place. Kim Burrell is that chosen vessel who will render the photographed broken and bruised "Freedom" in a real relationship with God!
What is secular? LOL Whitney Houstons job is a SINGER... she doesnt sing about Sex Drugs or any of that stuff. Church people kill me throwing around the word secular.
As usual, Kim did NOT disappoint! What a class act! What was even more impressive to me was that she did not try to turn the song into a Gospel tune, riddling it with "Thank ya Jesus" and "Bless His name"! That would have been tragic! If the Christian community is ever going to walk in our birthright of leadership on every platform, we must learn how to truly be all things to ALL people, that we may win some. I suspect more than a few people watching are now in possession of a Kim Burrell CD or two! BRILLIANT!
Hmmm, Bruce: so noted. You're correct that definitions are certainly useful to have an informed conversation. Let's explore the definition of "secular": (adjective) 1 a : of or relating to the worldly or temporal b : not overtly or specifically religious c : not ecclesiastical or clerical http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/secular Notice I didn't use a bible dictionary, either. ;-) So the larger point: anything, ANYTHING that does not DIRECTLY edify, exhort, give honor/worship to the Lord Jesus Christ and the untainted gospel of Jesus Christ would be considered SECULAR. Hope that definition brings you back to life from the church folk that keep killing you per the usage of the word.
I loved Kim's version of the song and Whitney's reaction to it. I believe Kim will minister to many people in the "secular" world with her new project, I would shy away or turn off traditional gospel for years until I heard Kirk and then The Clark Sisters by mistake and needless to say I have "come in from the world" but Kim will definatley bless those who are not in the "church".
Everybody knows that Kim Burrell can sing anything at anytime and anywhere better than most other artists in both genres. She is a unique and exceptionally talented lady (No Question). It is just that I admired the fact that she did dress with sophistication and reserved those skills for presentations of heavenly substance. Lately, with new subject in her lyrics, her wardrobe is starting to resemble the guest artist in a local nightclub. I am just not interested in that. As far as a response from the audience, people always recognize a gift because it brings money. I admire artist who sing about Jesus Christ and salvation in him. It is also what gave her a distinguished category and trait from others. As a celebrity, you face criticism in any industry. People have a right to express their thoughts on the matter. People will discuss your presentation whether they feel that it is good or evil to them. What matters most is what God thinks of you and how much time you spend pleasing God.
@ Tam Tam...thanks for the CLEAR definition what secular is. I did not watch it. Did Kim Burrell sing "You Can Change" or "Calvary"....or..... I am sorry, this was not a tribute to Jesus, this was a tribute to Whitney Houston.
@ EVERYBODY....I Corinthians starting in verse 31.....So whether you eat or drink or WHATEVER you do,do it ALL for THE GLORY OF GOD( I interject, not for the glory of Whitney Houston, Kim Burrell, or the crowd). Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks, OR THE CHURCH OF GOD.....even as I try to please everybody in everyway. FOR I AM NOT SEEKING MY OWN GOOD but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example,AS I FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF CHRIST.
O.M.GEEEEEEEEEE. @mikethemessenger-- don't let us EVER catch you being honored for ANYTHING you've done in work, church, life, ANYWHERE. EVAH! LOL It's okay to have a tribute performance. It doesn't steal God's glory to pay tribute to someone. And I don't think God needs a recitation of a certain number of "Hallelujahs" and "Ee-bo-shas" in order for Him to be glorified in that setting. It's a heart issue and since we don't know it, we may wanna tread lightly in determining who is and isn't legit. In the end, you'll have simply made your case known and then... you'll be back on this blog to do it all again tomorrow. Like... I hope you're gettin' paid for all of this work you're putting in. Geeez. *stank face* LOL
@EJ.... Jesus MUST increase we MUST decrease. Build up treasures in Heaven, not on this Earth. We are in the world, not of the world. If we REALLY believe and follow Jesus, we WILL be persecuted by the world and it's people, because Jesus was persecuted first.
@mikethemessenger-- blahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. <--- my level of interest in everything you're saying. Like I said, don't let us find you gettin' honored or appreciated by anyone. EVERRRRRRRRRR! LOL
@ EJ....I am not saying anything. All of this is in The Holy Bible:)
JESUS @mike TOOOOO DEEP..PICTURE IT.. your in biology class and your teacher says "you cant live without the SUN" your response wud be "you sure cant live without the SON"
No more video =(
Kim toreeeeeeeeeee that up. She clowned on a whole lotta folks with the performance!
@mdixon....Both of those answers are correct:)
To one fellow christian to another: All of you that sit in judgement of what Kim is doing (all you holier that thou's), its because of you more people of the world DON'T come to church to receive Christ. Get over yourselves, ans sweep around your own front door. I know in my heart God was pleased with what Kim did on last night, and any other night for that matter. She wass a woman of God singing for HIM in tribute to Ms. Houston. GOD is love! She sang, "Love's a miracle that sets us free, and I believe that we are freed." ENOUGH SAID.
The world does not come to church because they want to do their "own thing"....no submitting to Jesus or His teachings....well, then again maybe they are coming to church:)
FYI folks-- I re-posted the video from another source... watch it before it's taken down again! LOL
lol@ mike yur funny
Thank You Jesus for Kim Burrell that was awesome. I would love her to remake more songs. That was great. That was the best performance that night. It was very original as only Kim could do it. But to be honest I was thinking that she would make it jazzyier much like she did the remake of "is my living in vain". No one would have expected her to do that. But all in all. Kim is the best!
I always wonder how old certain flok are, the more myopic their views are on this blog! LOLOL!!! Sometimes, even though we are quoting the "Holy Bible", we are still wrong, simply because we have taken said Scriptures out of context. I do recall seeing a passage about giving HONOR to whom honor is due. I'm not a big Whitney fan, but I agree her career certainly warrants honoring. To rant about how people don't want to come to church because they're doing their own thing makes you appear both out of touch and inexperienced. Now, there is nothing wrong with being twelve, but perhaps one's perspective may change as one gets older, no?
When they took a side shot of her i said " Look at the Butt on that" She will wow men on any stage.
I enjoyed her!!!!
kIM and Whitney are friends. Whitney has never left the church. Even in her speech, she praised God and gave him the glory. I've had the pleasure of seeing her in concerts several times and she ALWAYS praises God, speaks of her love for him and sings a gospel song whether it is here in the US or Germany or Poland. Often times, her fans in foreign land doesn't get it but she still does it. We never know who is ministering to who on the downlow because friends don't run to the press when other friends are going through stuff. Kim's performance and Whitney's reactins TOUCHED me and moved me to tears. We should never be *appropriate* when praising God. Everyone reacts in their own way and who is to say Whitney's reacting wasn't the spirit of God moving in her body as one of her favorite artists serenaded her. Just to let you know, Kim was a complete suprise. Whitney knew Jennifer was going to sing but they kept Kim a surprise from her hence her reactions. Loved it!
Here is what is interesting about all of this for me. I like Kim Burrell and believes she has one of the finest instruments around. However, what I find odd is how the "church/gospel community" is embracing Kim's tribute to Whitney Houston, yet when Yolanda Adams did a tribute to Chaka Khan at the BET Awards a few years ago, she was going to hell. She endured much public backlash from the religious community. Here Kim Burrell has ANNOUNCED that she is making a secular project and some measures of the church world is standing up celebrating it and even predicting how she will "minister" to the world. Such a double standard...let's all strive for consistency in what we do as we push to live for and honor Christ in both word and deed.
@JB, The church folks were upset at the song, "Sweet Thang" and thought Yolanda looked very uncomfortable singing the song. As I can recall, Chaka asked Yolanda to sing that song in her honor. Yolanda did it, changed some of the lyrics and did a nice job.
Kim did what she was invited to the BET Honors to do. She took a song, revamped it, made it a tribute to someone else. She wasn't called to come and have church and have sinners run to the altar. She did a phenomenal job and showcased her talents well. She's a singer's singer. She came to pay homage to Whitney and she did just that in excellence. She changed the song to make it personal to her relationship with Whitney. I liked that a lot.
@ LH - I understand what Kim did and don't have an issue with it. Yolanda did the same thing and was bashed for it. Why wasn't she embraced in the same manner in which you all are embracing Kim? That's more of the point I'm trying to make.
Kim all i can say is STUPID! She has done it again...FLAWLESS VICTORY......UNSTOPPABLE!!!! WHITNEY WAS JUST BLOWN AWAY!
ALL the music we love to place in our little genres belong to GOD. Being that most of us are the offspring of those slaves who 'stole away' in the night and prayed and sang their way out of the fields, the corruptible and incorruptible seed is all His and HE WILL bring it all under submission, in due season. EVERYone will be called upon for their rightful service and KIM and YOLANDA are just going where they're called upon. HOW WILL THEY HEAR without a preacher.., a singer, a saxophonist, an organist, a backing vocalist... STAND in your truth wherever you're planted.
The bible tells us that the devil(Lucifer) was a musician ( Ezekiel 28:11-19 (KJV)), so its obvious he has influence over it today. Music stirs emotions so one has to find out the root of the influence behind it. Is it the devil or God? God may put things in order in the final analysis but there is and should be a distiniction between the holy and profane. I think we underestimate the power of music and its messages.
Daggon it, Paul N...I actually, whole-heartedly agree with you. Ha! How bout that!? However, I think some of us forget sometimes that Christ used many methods to make his points...parables, thought provoking questions, etc. He didn't always over-populate the conversations with Hebrew text, "my Daddy said" quotes, or "follow me or go to hell" threats. He was a gentlemen...smooth even. You can make such a difference in your witness by simply applying the word, living out the word, or explaining it in a way anyone can understand and receive. You have to know your audience. Christ showed us that but I think some of us choose not to receive that wisdom. Therefore, in some cases, we miss the move of God...
@ JB, this reminds me of the Stellar award controversy two decades ago when Vickie Winans was doing a number which involved dance and then the same church going gospel community who stay at the four walls of the church unfairly criticized her. This is nothing new, because folk was critical of the Hawkins family, Andrae Crouch and Kirk Franklin because the traditional church folk want gospel music in their "church world" instead of sharing the gospel in venues outside the church. @DiLeMo--there are several scriptures in the bible regarding honor, and yes as Christians we are to honor. But one stood out is in 1 Peter 2:17 and it says that Christians are to honor all people.
Good Lord! You know what? Sometimes I think some of you "christians" spend too much time with your heads in the Bible and butts in the clothing stores, hat makers and shoe shops and not enough time with your real innate feelings of love for one human being from another, even if what you see them doing IN YOUR OPINION or INTERPRETATION of the WORD may not fall under what we like to call "living right" and it's actually quite sickening. You are so quick to judge someone else. SHUT UP already and yeah, I wrote that. I was raised up in church, loved it but the whole scene became on big joke to me after a while. I love God, he keeps me and continues to show mercies to me everyday that leave me amazed, grateful and loving him more but you hypocrites make a sister wanna stay home and praise God in my own space. I support Kim in her choices because that's HER JOURNEY to take as well as Whitney, Yolanda and whomever else you all choose to light into. Who better for the world to see be perfectly imperfect and then for the world to watch God pick them up and bring them back around. Ain't nobody wrestling no lion's in lion's dens these days, we gotta be on some REAL stuff to reach people. I dare anyone of you to open you "closets" for the world to see. These women are public figures and they are going to make bad choices sometimes, fall down sometimes and maybe even worse but i see them still giving praise and we are supposed to come with love and a gentle hand not beat them over the head and criticize them. "Secular", uuuggghhnn, that word.... all I know is, that if a few so called GOSPEL ARTISTS hadn't made some records that got played on non- gospel radio stations and such, alot of souls would not have been saved and I know that for a fact. Get off their backs, they've got enough ridin' them. Pray for them, encourage, be NICE about it too, hard work Mr or Ms Christian? You should be ashamed, throwing scripture around like you've got it all under control. We've all got growing and more learning to do, trust that God has THAT under control for us all. Watch that, it could all come back and bite you through your choir robes..... and some of us, even on here are gonna BURN! All in love. I'll pray for you and you pray for me.
Kim forget the hater you did your job I can't stop watching how you song that song. you sung from the heart. keep doing what you doing
@ Gottasayit71....The meaning of hypocrite is being something that a person is not. I lived in the world for many years and people knew who I was.....drunk,party person, did not care about anybody but myself. I had to be the center of attention. Everything focused on ME, what I could use people for.....money,sex,alcohol,etc. I was a hypocrite in the world, being someone that Jesus intended me not to be. BUT GOD....chose me,changed me and cleansed me. Jesus, by providing Holy Ghost direction, keeps me (and many others) from not being a hypocrite in the church. ALL scripture is for edification, reproof and rebuke. Jesus CHASTISES the ones He loves. His sheep hear His voice. His scriptures cut like a two edged sword. If His Word did not, It would not be bothering some people so much. I agree with you, Miss Burrell is making HER own choices. Jesus says, we must be IN the world, but NOT of the world. Jesus MUST increase we MUST decrease. I would rather be in church with a few hypocrites than in the world with ALL hypocrites. Music does not save anybody. The agitation, prompting, and drawing of the Holy Ghost does. Jesus uses His Word to agitate the soil (spirit)and till the soil (more agitation of the spirit). His Word gets planted, waterered, and ONLY Jesus gets the increase. Jesus says, If you really love Me, you will KEEP My commands.
@ Gayle. I am not a Bible scholar, and anyone who knows Bible history please correct me, but the scripture you bring up, I Peter 2:17 refers to honoring the people who rule over you...Kings (Presidents), and Masters (bosses)...not all people. Proper respect to all people (don't look down on the poor, widow, orphan, downtrodden). Love the brotherhood of believers, FEAR GOD, honor the king.
i just wanna say that the entire first paragraph of Gottasayit71's comment just took me OUT. i am DYING!!! *falls outta chair laughing* i couldn't have said it better.
In all thy getting, get understanding. Thank you, mikethemessenger for the clarification regarding "honor" in this context.
Gayle, a better scripture reference would be Romans 12. :-)
@v4c Romans 12 starting in verse 1: Therefore I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer YOUR bodies as living sacrifices, HOLY AND PLEASING TO GOD, this is YOUR spiritual act of worship. DO NOT CONFORM ANY LONGER to the pattern of THIS WORLD, but be TRANSFORMED by the renewal of YOUR mind. Then YOU will be able to TEST and APPROVE what GOD's WILL is...His good, pleasing and PERFECT will. Yes, definitely a great scripture. Thanks.
MtM: The whole chapter is equally blessed and fitting. And how one conforms or not is subjective. However, I was hoping that Gayle would especially see verse 10. :-) And thank you!
@ Mikethemessenger- I hear you on some of the things you are saying, but uhm.... The meaning of the word "hypocrite" is actually: 1.(n.) One who plays a part; especially, one who, for the purpose of winning approbation of favor, puts on a fair outside seeming; one who feigns to be other and better than he is; a false pretender to virtue or piety; one who simulates virtue or piety. So it's not " being something that a person is not.." it's actually in short "fronting". Number 2: You say that "... Jesus CHASTISES the ones He loves. His sheep hear His voice. His scriptures cut like a two edged sword. If His Word did not, It would not be bothering some people so much." And you are right but it's JESUS that does the chastising, not some of us who think we've got the right to and it's cool if we disagree. I'm not on here to argue at all, we are here to express our points of views and hopefully we'll all walk away knowing better. I don't mind God's word getting in on me but the worst thing is when an ill-willed person with a Bible in their hand comes for you in all of their grandeur... maybe where you come from you've not seen or experienced it but I'm only talking from my experiences and I'm kinda turned off. Sorry, I just am. I'm happy though, in that, I know God for myself. I love me and I love you as I should love everyone with God's love. I feel good living this way and trusting that God's got it. Up front, I was a teenage mom. My mom tried to keep us kids out of the streets, God bless her and had us all up in church almost 6 days a week. I only remember doing my homework on the pews. I appreciate her love and conviction to keep us safe but by the time I got a little freedom, I had no idea of how seductive the streets actually were, even though Momand Dad tried to warn and prepare us. So, my little naive tail was pregnant at 16. What I thought was love was (excuse me while I laugh...) NOT in no way, shape or form and I immediately retreated to the safety of my parents arms and my church family's love. But, good Lord, some of those church folk actually made me feel so bad. After a morning service one sunday, a few of the missionaries and deaconesses summoned me over to their table where they were eating and quietly scolded me. Those mean old biddies probably thought they were doing the right thing too! Their faces were twisted with disgust but the thing that got me was that they were all in the corner trying to get at me on the low. They didn't step to my mom, they caught me when I was alone. I was 16 and already feeling pressure and confusion and all of that. The pain in my heart came from not even what they said to me, but the sneaky way they were getting it done. Everyone and every church does not have women like this and even I know now that those women probably felt like crap later (especially after my mom found out) but what I'm trying to say in essence is this MTM... The word is direct. YOU know what it is. All I'm saying is, let's cut the crude, unnecessary hurting and tearing down of each other in the name of God's word, you feel me? One more thing: I quote you as saying "...Music does not save anybody. The agitation, prompting, and drawing of the Holy Ghost does. ". Maybe so, but I tell you one thing.... I bet that there's alot of people out there who hadn't set foot in a church but when they heard "Jesus Is Love" for the first time on an R&B radio station, they were shook to the core and moved to learn more about this "Jesus". I'm a special one, just like you and everyone else that's trying to do better with their lives and follow God. And that's good for you if you'd rather be in church with a few hypocrites than out in the world with all of them... maybe you skipped over the part I wrote when I say I'd rather praise him in my own space. Just because I don't go to church does not mean that I'm not surrounded by God fearing, loving people or that I'm any less than you in my coviction and love for God. maybe I'm missing something and maybe I'm not. From the looks of things though and the way my life is going and has gone to this point. The ups and downs, the losses, the blessings, the unfathomable love that God expresses to me each and everyday ... I'm doing quite alright. I'm not quick to judge. It just does not sit well in my spirit... I just suggest that we all take heed to that.... Emphasis on "ALL".
Romans 12 verse 10 is only to honor people who are part of the "one body"...the church of the One and Only True God, Jesus.... as brought up in verse 5...so in Christ, we who are many form one body.
Oh, and God bless you all. Feel free to hit me up. I am open even though I may come across as a little flippy at the mouth, lol... I'm just tired of all of the hate and negativity, especially toward eachother...geeeesssh! Good weekend to you all...and @EaZy- laughter feels good, doesn't it?
Gottasayit71: Being a hypocrite is "frontin'"...as in the definition you gave above, "one who plays a part"....believe me, I was real good at it, before Jesus straightened me out...chastised me real good. I needed it. I am sorry that some of the "church members" got on your case...they did not realize (and I am now guessing, please correct me if I am not on the right path) if you do not have the "real "Holy Ghost" guiding you, you will walk in the flesh, not in the spirit...been there, done that. Sure, people who hear "Jesus Is Love" are shook to the core...that IS Holy Ghost prompting and agitation. The Word Of Jesus IS doing the cutting, ...like a two-edged sword, not me. Not being crude at all, just sharing what Jesus says.
MtM: *sigh* I absolutely will not debate whether or not Whitney Houston is a part of the body...I simply refuse to go there. Aside from the fact that I don't think I should have to, you're free to think what you want. Unbelievable...
@ Gottasayit71.....I forgot to answer the going to church comment. I choose to be in a church building. Jesus never commanded anyone to be in a building, meet every Sunday and Wednesday. Jesus said to not forsake the assembly of believers. This is because in that time frame, the Jews who just converted to following Jesus did not meet with Jesus followers and, after awhile, were pulled back into the world, back to Egypt,so to say, to not following Jesus (i.e. Bob Dylan in this century). But, please, get together with believers , as need be, for edification, reproof, and rebuke (yea, that one is not fun...but, we all need it). If you do not go to a church building, do not forget to take the bread and the grape juice (wine if that how you take it....being an ex-alcholic no way for me:)) in rememberance of Jesus. May the Holy Ghost shine upon you, daily, and guide you, daily.
@ v4c...Again, I am not saying anything. This is what the Word of Jesus says.
Hey, if we can speak out about gospel artists, why did the christian community speak out about Sarah Palin, who let her child have that baby out of wedlock? did someone speak out about that and tell her she was a bad mother because she let her child fool around? not in the Christian community because we tend to jump on the artists because they choose to do and appear on secular venues, yet some are so afraid to speak out about Mark Sanford, who is a Christian and his antics, cheating on his wife. We so quick to judge our artists just because they are in secular venues, yet we don't look into our hearts and we fall short just like those gospel artists. I know people don't want to hear that, but that's the truth. I know this may be off subject, but Kim made a choice and it offended some of you here, however, she I believed was called by the Lord to go places we in the church cannot go. We need to pray for our gospel artists and encourage them, not tearing them down like here of late.
MtM: It's you. You have interpreted the Word in a way the excludes Whitney from the body of Christ. I interpret it in a way that includes her...and obviously, so does Kim Burrell. Let's leave it at that. :-)
@ Gayle.....That was her daughters choice. Later on, her daughter brought up the fact that in this western culture, getting married at that age is looked down upon, even in the church. She burned with passion for a man. But, Paul says, rather than to burn with passion and sin, get married. Mark Sanford's choice, also. Jesus says, Do not commit adultery. If we, as a church body, do not listen and ask for guidance from the Holy Ghost that Jesus gives us to be a comforter and guide, we, in and of ourselves, will mess up,BIGTIME. We, as believers and followers of Jesus, are called to "get out of the four walls, the " us four and no more "philosophy. BUT, it is what we do with the open door that Jesus gives us that counts. Did Kim Burrell REALLY share the Gospel...the Good News of Jesus. Like I mentioned earlier in this blog, why didn't she sing "You Can Change" or "Calvary"...those songs cut like a two-edged sword.
@v43...I did not interpret anything. I just wrote down what the Bible states:)
I dunno WHY in the name of Mary and Martha y'all are carrying on like this. Someone.... quick... what are you hoping to accomplish? Anyone can answer.
Mike, I believe Kim did share the gospel with people. She shared the gospel by being a witness to her faith and let's leave it at that.
@EJ- all of this back and forth, I think, is good for all of us. We should exchange with eachother not in the quest to be 'right' , but in the quest to try to understand better what is going on so that we can walk away and do better. We are human beings and we might get a little 'warm' when expressing ourselves. I think it's healthy. I don't know about you but I've learned something from each of you today and I'm feeling pretty good about that. MTM- I hear you... blessings to you. You know, because of you, I might just take up on one of my good friends' offer to visit her church with her. I must admit that I do miss the fellowship and the blessing of hearing the testimonies and the deliverance of the word....yeah, I miss it.... if i decide to go, I'll reach out and let you know how things went. Congratualtions to you on all of your successes in life, I know it's no easy road, but to hear you tell it you have been through it and survived it and I know God's still working with you just like he is with all of us. Kim Burell blessed my heart and I didn't even think twice about her dress 'til I started reading these posts. And man, listen, I've got a tatoo on my arm that I got when I was a teenager and I know I"m gonna hear about it until the day that they cross my stiff arms over my chest and fix my wig. Oh well, whatever.... I'll just wait and see what God has to say about it if I'm blessed enough to see him when I leave this place.... Goodnight all. May God's mercy, love and tender care protect you and yours. The U.S.A. and the world and especially the elderly and the babies.
EJ...for the same reason you got all OMG on here earlier! LOL! MtM: You're the only human on the planet who does not automatically interpret what they read or what is said, lol. Go figure! You sound so silly sometimes trying to be so deep. I applaud your passion & zeal though...not hating on that at all...
@ gottasayit71 Even though I do not have a tattoo , you aren't gonna hear anything from me about it. Jesus looks on the inside, the heart, not on the outside:) If anybody brings it up, tell them Jesus looks at the heart:). @ V4C...no interpretation to give. I just wrote down the scriptures. Not trying to be deep at all. We should all have passion and zeal for the One we love...Jesus!!!!
Yay! Can we all sing "Cum Ba Yah" now?!
HA! PEACE
@All-- A new house rule is in place that speaks to these quarrelsome debates that seem to instantly pop up and continue forever. In short-- it all ends now. You can check it at http://localhost/gospelpundit/house-rules/ so you won't feel like I didn't tell you. There have already been casualties and, I expect, more shall come. Pray NOT to be in the number. And, thanks for visiting the site... keep comin'. I hope you enjoy! :-)
@EJ....you run this website...you call the shots...monitor what you have to monitor....I can accept that...yes, even me:).
Got you, EJ! Understood. have a great day!
I love Jesus...lol... Hope that helps!
My take on this whole thing: The fussing and fighting is counteractive. Think of this: instead of throwing (and I do mean throwing) scriptures and heightening the definition of elementary words (hypocrite, secular), we can - and should - be sharing the Gospel with those who don't know the pardon of their sin in Christ Jesus. Kim Burrell's immense talent was display in true form during the BET Honors. And what's remarkable is how she clearly merged the gift of song, which is universal, and seamlessly ministered to Whitney Houston. Pay attention to the last minute of the performance - she says in essence, Whitney, you can make; we believe in you, we love you even though you struggle, God loves you and keep believing in yourself. As a member of the Church of God in Christ, I have over the years seen Kim minister to souls inside the church walls the same way. No pun intended here but, let us remember that effective ministry does not preach to the choir, it goes into the hedges and highways of this troubled world and restores the broken. Saints...if there are any of us in here (LOL joking), find the inspiration in this video and share it with someone who may need to be reminded that someone (God) believes in them. EJ, thanks for posting the video, and most of all, for commenting objectively in your summary of the performance.
"Kim Burrell's immense talent was display in true form during the BET Honors. And what's remarkable is how she clearly merged the gift of song, which is universal, and seamlessly ministered to Whitney Houston. " She sure did! Ministered to me too, goodness gracious.
I loved the performance- it brought me to tears! I love Whitney Houston (always have), and I love Kim Burrell. I don't really see a need to over spiritualize or, inversely, to demonize the performance- it was just great entertainment. Think about it this way, if Kim wasn't known as a gospel artist, would that performance be seen as nothing less than world class, tear-jerking, musical genius? I even think Kim was so emotional that she made up some of those words as she went along-priceless! Brothers and sisters-don't make too much of this- let's pray and celebrate for both Whitney and Kim.
KB was off the hook....awesome !!...yeah KB was getting a lot of bashing b/c of this performance...but i smell hate-o-rade in the atmosphere..KB sang an inspirational song. Mary Mary and some other gospel singers sing inspirational songs w/o mentioning Jesus. I find nothing wrong with inspirational songs with a message. To each his own...Kim is about to touch the untouched....Rich people need Christ just like middle class and poor folks need Christ. WE ALL NEED CHRIST...we can't just sit in church sunday after sunday and stare at each other...we gotta get in the streets...get on some other platforms....KB ministers to a lot of secular artists away from the camera. You would be suprised at some of the things these secular artists are going through...They probably won't go to church b/c us church folks are always judging....Judge not and be not judged...KB rocks !! but Jesus Christ is the ROCK !!
KimBurell is one of the best singers ever that lived.I think she at that point ministered to Whitney about that you don't have to go through no more chalenges because i believ in you.I can tell that alot of people were touced thank God he is in control
Wonderful, Kim sang her but off, Beautiful job!!!!!!!!!!!
If you don't like her dress then don't look at her. Idiot!
all of una dey crase....just enjoy what God has given!is that too much to ask?
