ChitChat: When I Don't Feel Like Listening To Gospel…

This morning, I BLASTED the new album from Karen Clark Sheard and Ted Winn’s Balance CD.  Such great projects!  And I was about to go to Kierra’s This Is Me project (an all-time fave), until I realized that I actually didn’t feel like hearing gospel music at that moment.

We’re being real, right?  A big part of my job focuses on listening to, and making commentary on, gospel music.  And I love it.  But uhh… I take breaks.  Often.

It’s not that I don’t wanna hear about God or anything.  I just don’t want to hear the music sometimes– the progressions, the syntax.  Want to experience Him a bit more… implicitly.

Now, I know some of you still are not “allowed” to listen to anything else, but for those of you who have a varied music collection and don’t cover your ears to avoid the radio when you go shopping (hehehehee), do you ever have those moments?

Today, I listened to Radiohead and Maroon 5.  And, other times, I find myself jammin’ to Brandy, Luther Vandross, Faith Evans or Anita Baker.

Just curious– in those moments, who do you listen to?

I like old music of the 60/70s era. I enjoy some contemporary secular artists but the throwback R&B of that era is my kind of listening pleasure.

WHAT?! don't FEEL like listening to gospel? somebody will be throwing around some oil in 5...4...3...lol! seriously - when i get in that mood, i'm listening to Brandy, Jill Scott, Amel Larrieux, Norah Jones, Johnny Legend (i don't know why i can't just call him "John") and Rahsaan Patterson. sometimes when i miss my dad who passed away a few years ago, i'll pull out what he used to blast when i was younger - Earth, Wind & Fire, Bill Withers, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, etc. ironically, we had a big blowout a few weeks ago in Singles Sunday School (don't ask) about whether single people should be listening to this kind of music - specifically Jill Scott. once you get married, it's ok. *blank stare*

yea when i dont feel like listening to gospel i usally try to find postive edifying music i can listen to like some of stevie wonders music and some micheal jacksons music.alot of people people feel like thats being luke warm but the bible says there is a time and place for everything under the sun.so i believe that certain times in your life its ok to listen to secular music.like dates.honeymoons weddings and an anniversy with your spouse.just as long as the content is not teaching anything against the kingdom of God and its righteousness i have no problem with it.buts that hard to find now or days.everything now or days is totally anti kingdom.its crazy. i use phill 4:8 to be my guide.its says and now one final thing fix your thoughts on what is pure and honorable and what is right and lovely and admirable.think on things that are excellent and worthy of praise.if your listening to music that meets the standards listed in the vers above i see no problem in you listeing to it. but if it doesnt then you need to get rid of it.it just not good for your soul or spirit .and will hinder you releationship with the lord. well thats my take peace and God bless

First, the fact that you mentioned and tagged Radiohead in one of your posts makes me smile. I actually DON'T listen to Gospel more than I actually DO these days. Surprise, surprise. :) I am currently loving the albums from Broken Bells, Vampire Weekend, Sade and Robbie Seay Band. Those are staying in rotation a lot for me. They are incredible musically and all inspire me.

LOL @ EaZy's blank stare! You just have to know your triggers and limits...and know them well. It's not the same for everyone... Waaaaaaay too many to list. But Raheem DeVaugh's Love and War Masterpeace is some pure HOTTNESS and that's pretty much all I listen to when I'm ready to listen to something other than gospel music. Yeah, even the the last half, lol. If he doesn't get a grammy for this, I'll be extremely disappointed. I also love Donny Hathaway (the non-depressing stuff, lol), Jonathan Butler, Faith Evans, India.Arie, Ledisi (who I'll be seeing Saturday, HA!), Chrisette Michele, Joe, Rahsaan Patterson, Musiq Soulchild...I could go on and on... I intend to hop on that new Keke Wyatt joint as well. Man that chick can sang!

  • gospoman wrote on March 23, 2010

I know exactly how you feel. I LOVE gospel music... but when I'm in the mood for something else, I'll do Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Anita Baker, etc. You know, good ol' grown folks R&B. Or, I may be in a mood for Hillsongs, or some old school CCM or Praise/Worship music. If I want hip-hop or dance, I'll put on some Toby Mac, or Raze, or Souljahz. Most of the time, when I'm listening to music, all of these styles and more are thrown together and played randomly.

Yes after I get tired of listening to gospel or just need to just chill I will hit the soul & r&b genre under my Zune. Add Maxwell in there also. @v4c, I have not heard Raheem DeVaughn's cd but willing to give anything a try.

I smiled as I read these comments because I listen to a lot of the artists that were listed by everyone. I actually have 2 CD cases, one with Christian music and the other with "secular" music. Don't get me wrong. Nothing can fulfill me like a good song about the love of God. But, there are times when I just wanna hear something different, stylistically. Recently, I bought Maysa "A Woman in Love" (Very good CD) and Monica "Still Standing." I want to buy the Erykah Badu CD when it comes out, but I'm still praying on that one. I'm not too sure about some of her lyrics (beliefs) and weird symbolism on her CD covers. Someone help me out on this one. Give me reassurance that I can buy it "guilt-free." LOL

@mightymouth normally I would be one of the more open minded people when it comes to listening to secular music, but Erykah's last cd scared the mess out of me! She tricked me with honey! Lol! I had to throw that cd away. She's on strict probation with me.

  • EaZy wrote on March 23, 2010

ok - i'm talking back to a lot of folks, look for your name *lol* @mylum - re: Erykah Badu...right? i knew when i saw the cover that i was about to be upset. i don't think i've ever listened to it in it's entirety, but what i've heard from the upcoming project, you may be able to remove her from probationary status. @Mighty Mouth - i'm fighting with myself over Monica. is it worth it? also, see the above statement re: Erykah @Sharell - ANYTHING from the 80's and early 90's instantly puts a smile on my face. those were some of the best years of my life! (i'm only 31, y'all) @Tam Tam - I like Michael Buble too...although i did get a strange look from the dude working the register at Best Buy when I bought it. @v4c - i am usually wearing that same blank stare every Sunday for the entire class. i can't WAIT until this quarter is over. i need to find a different group. those folks are too deep for their own good...and since i'm still happy with your Youthful Praise recommendation, i'll give Raheim a try. *nods* @ everyone else...there was some good stuff listed! although someone said Sade (i don't feel like reading again to find out who). i just can't get into it. she's like musical Lunesta...knocks me out instantly.

I heard snippets and it was quite strange (and creepy...LOL). @EaZy...I'm hesitant to whether a CD is "good" or not because I know people have different tastes. But, I do like it. I haven't bought a Monica album since the 90's, but I bought this one because of the reality show...LOL. In fact, it kind of reminds me of a 90's R & B CD, with mostly ballads and such. @G.Sigler...LOLOL @ *holds head down and walks away*..Yeah, I feel like that about my Amy Winehouse CD's. I hate that she has a filthy mouth. Her music is SO good!!

Doc, I understand where you are coming from completely. I find myself listening to all types of music since I am a huge music fan. I listen to the classics doc...the Coltrains, Luther, Motown, Kirk Whalum, and so many more. It's all about moderation, and what you allow to infultrate your system. If you allow for the music to control your everyday life and replace the very God that is you are supposed to be living for, then you are in the wrong, and you need to recognize that before it becomes to late.

  • Amber wrote on March 24, 2010

Wow. Such interesting comments. I didn't find anyone in the list who didn't go with their "feelings". I know that I will be accused of not having "balance", but everybody seemed relieved and even excited to share that secular inclinations. I spent many years of my life unsaved and now that I'm a believer a lot of what I used to listen to can no longer be. I am taught that whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, or takes off the relish of spiritual things; in short, whatever increases the strength and authority of your body over your mind, that's sin to you even if it seems innocent. Most of the music that I used to listen to (much of what is listed above) has the potential to harden my heart toward God because it presents life options that my flesh actually desires. It also obscures my awareness of the ugliness of sin and the holiness of God. I find that listening to other things also takes the edge off of my hunger for the things of God. I may pull out some classical or jazz or some other Christian styles but some of the stuff listed above would take me out! My choice, move toward Him -- EVERY WAKING MOMENT! I am so in love with Him I just choose not to entertain myself with anything that dishonors Him. Not judging you. This is just me. Maybe as I mature in God, I can look forward to getting strong enough to pull it back out! NOT! It does amaze me that all of the years people tried to "win me to Christ" and now that I'm here I find that there's not a more hypocritical bunch. Only been a believer for a few years but I'm sure glad I'm grounded in Him! Love you Jesus -- full time!

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 24, 2010

Per Amber's comment here: "It does amaze me that all of the years people tried to “win me to Christ” and now that I’m here I find that there’s not a more hypocritical bunch. Only been a believer for a few years but I’m sure glad I’m grounded in Him! Love you Jesus — full time!" This is the beginning of a VERY SLIPPERY SLOPE. Because the question becomes this: when is too much too much? A song? Several songs? Dancing? Dancing partners? Dancing partners turn into horizontal dancing partners? Horizontal dancing partners turn into NAKED dancing partners? And then the dance becomes.... um hmmmm.... So Amber, eventually, your soul was won to Christ. Hallelujah! So would you then go back to those who sowed and watered your soul and inspect their lives to look for imperfections? And if you saw such imperfection, would that then negate your salvation to the point that you would drop your salvation like a bad habit because you felt it was tainted by somebody listening to (insert name here)? Let's explore the definition of hypocrite: "1 : a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion" http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hypocrite Per that definition, it would seem that the posters here are being quite honest and open about their choices of music. They are being TRUTHFUL, and it's the truth that sets us free, right? We are free from the hypocritical judgement of those who are putting on an appearance of piety for the sake of whatever. But I won't go there because as you are (still) a babe in Christ, and as maturity comes, so will wisdom. It has been mentioned upthread about thinking on those things that are just, pure, lovely, etc. So the measure is this: if we are saying/doing/listening to anything that pulls us away from the Lord Jesus Christ, then we should not listen to it at all. We should throw it away. Here's another thing: some of this gospel music out today is even more evil than some secular music because of the biblically INACCURATE messages put forth in them. So what's worse, I ask? Me listening to Michael Buble singing "The Way You Look Tonight" (my first dance song at my upcoming wedding) or that song that says "there's no blessing without a battle" Huh? The devil is a liar! Every blessing doesn't come with a battle. The Lord's sovereignty prevails. I don't have to fight for every battle! ***packs up soapbox*** Sorry for the length of the rant (sorta)

  • EJ wrote on March 24, 2010

@Tam Tam-- you ain't sorry! LOL ... not even a little bit. @Amber-- As you're new in Christ, your position is understandable and probably most beneficial for you. As you grow, however, I believe you'll realize that those who don't abide by your convictions can still be just as in love with Christ "full time" as you are. And you'll probably be less inclined to make such accusations, too. But that revelation will come by the Holy Spirit, over time... we can't force it and I'm not inclined to try. @All-- Out of fear that this thread will become a debate about whether we should be listening to secular music, can we just agree to allow Amber to have her opinion and convictions about the music that she listens to? It doesn't affect any of us, really. No need for useless debating in the Kingdom on this one, folks. Thanks.

  • Odi_A wrote on March 24, 2010

Heller to all, lol. I love this topic. When I first came to know Christ I went through a period where I didn't/couldn't listen to anything but gospel music... It was amazing to find that all the music I used to listen too, and trust I LOVE/d music in general, just didn't do it for me the way it used to. Like EJ said it was beneficial for me at that time. As I grew in Christ, however, I began to enjoy music again, secular and beyond, because I knew who I was, and was more apt to discern via the Holy Spirit what music I felt was not in conflict with my relationship with God. In fact, because I listen to music for the music and all of its intricacies, I at times do listen to songs whose content I may not find to be agreeable, but the musicality of the song I do appreciate and pay attention to. But coming off of my soapbox these are some artists i love to listen to when I'm not listening to gospel. Lalah Hathaway, Tweet, Eric Roberson, Anthony Hamilton, Beyonce, Jill Scott, BILAL!!!, Lauryn Hill, Boney James, LEDISI!!!, Chrisette Michele, Brandy, Raheem Devaughn, Dwele, Adele, India Arie, Tawiah etc. p.s. I stop listening to gospel when it stops having as much of an impact on me, which happens when I listen to it ALL the time, I become desensitized, just being honest. Love yall. Odi

Relationship Over Religion - I'm feeling some kinda way about your oversight! LMBO...cause I clearly bragged about going to see her this coming Saturday! *Take Two* HA! LOL...

  • B Ford wrote on March 24, 2010

Thank you, EJ, because I was SHO' about to say something else. BUT we are not here to debate that.

  • truthteller wrote on March 24, 2010

  • EJ wrote on March 24, 2010

@Lou-- ain't it getting crazy?! but that's how @RelationshipOverReligion is... STAYS kickin' stuff over.

  • v4c wrote on March 24, 2010

Jazmine over Patti!? What's the world coming to???? Jazmine can sing but live, she can be a bit OC at times...cutting off the ends of her words and stuff... Whenever I hear "Love, Need, & Want You" or "If Only You Knew", I've got to stop, declare that it's MY song, and sing aloud dramatically... Those are "I hope nobody's staring in my car right about now" songs, LOL...

  • v4c wrote on March 24, 2010

Mrs.Rkb - *scratching & looking around* I can't do Trey Songz. I know my limits, lol. He'll get me in trouble... I can't even look at him too long... TROUBLE! Can't do him...

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 24, 2010

I'm back... "Giving honor to God, who is the head of my life, to EJ, the angel of Gospelpundit.com, to the associate pastors, deacons, "urshurs", nurses, minstrels, armorbearers, security/bodyguards (for those throwin' mics and glitter LOL!) and those whose name I should call but don't know to call... give yourselves a hand...." I feel like I need to go put on "The Praise and Worship Songs of Richard Smallwood" to get my holiness back.... (giggle).... Never understood the total hype of Ms. Patti LaBelle but when she sings "If You Only Knew", I do understand that. I feel the heart of that song. I may not feel like listening to gospel 24/7 but I always feel like feeling Jesus and WHATEVER I need to do to make sure I feel Jesus, I do that.... I REFUSE to put the Lord in a ("gospel music") box! ;-)

  • truthteller wrote on March 24, 2010

If you only knew???????? What song is that???? Sorry (laughing my head off).

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 24, 2010

Are you jivin' me, truthteller? (humorous side eye)

  • Relationship Over Religion wrote on March 24, 2010

ya'll gonna stop talking about my glitter...it was either that or i was gonna throw tambourines. your choice! :-P i know he was already mentioned, but i like repeating...eric roberson. dude can kill a freestyle song with ease. *sashays on out*

  • truthteller wrote on March 24, 2010

I'm laughing because you said the name of the song is "If you only knew." The correct name of the song is IF ONLY YOU KNEW. Sorry that was kind of funny.

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 24, 2010

@truthteller: Oooooohhhhhhh! LOL!!!!! @Relationship Over Religion: "clinkchingclinkschinsk" the sound of tamborines being tossed throughout the thread.... LOL! PS: one of my nicknames is Tambourine.... I like it because it reminds me that I'm a praiser! :-)

  • MightyMouth wrote on March 24, 2010

I'm surprised no one mentioned PJ Morton. Or maybe they did and I just missed it...

  • v4c wrote on March 24, 2010

Tambourines!? In my face!? LMBO! How rude is that?? I just bragged a bit...DAG! lol... Tam Tam - You have to admit that Patti has done a stellar job preserving her voice though. Age (and life) hasn't made her sound a hot mess like some other folks...

  • EaZy wrote on March 24, 2010

@EJ - i sure can, am i in trouble *trembles* i miss EVERYTHING. if i was at my old job, i would have been able to participate in this madness, lol... yes, Patti has preserved her voice but is anyone else annoyed by that thing she does when she takes long pauses the says the words quickly to catch up with the music? "PS: one of my nicknames is Tambourine…. I like it because it reminds me that I’m a praiser!" *dies, wakes back up then dies again*

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 24, 2010

@ v4c: Oh absolutely! :-) Patti gives us her all of her life and heart when she sings. She couldn't fake it if she tried. She pours her whole heart into her music. And it's real music, not this manufactured mess that's out here today. @EaZy: LOLLLLLLLLL!!!!! Tambourine has been given to me as a term of endearment! Don't hate! LOL!

  • v4c wrote on March 24, 2010

Just noticed that I missed a Lil'Wayne sighting on this list!!! Ugh! I'm praying that my disdain for him doesn't keep me out of heaven. It's that serious. I see his picture or see his name and I start talkin about him and being all evil, lol... smh... Pray for me church, lol...

  • EaZy wrote on March 24, 2010

@v4c - sorry for the delay in responding...everytime i re-read the comments, i find something i missed. Sade? no ma'am. everytime somebody starts talking to me about that cd, i fall all the way out. her, along with Alicia Keys 'Try Sleeping With A blahblahblah" are doublehandedly (i know it's not a word, go with me...) the reason why I haven't watched VH1 Soul in about a month. do they HAVE to play those two videos every hour? also, forgive me for mispelling Raheem's name. i spelled DARYL Coley's name wrong once on this site and boy did i hear it, lol @ Tam Tam - from now own, i wil refer to you as Sis. Tambourine. sidebar - does anyone else get annoyed when folks tie all kind of ribbons and ornaments on the tambourine? just sayin...and i personally prefer the moon shaped ones.

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 24, 2010

From EaZy @ sidebar - does anyone else get annoyed when folks tie all kind of ribbons and ornaments on the tambourine? just sayin…and i personally prefer the moon shaped ones. ***falls out laughing behind the vision of ribbons on the tambourines*** EaZy: I think the ribbons are ok if the tambourines are props for a praise dance otherwise, it's part of the "tryin' to be seen" spirit! BTW: the moon-shaped ones look weird to me... can't get your beat on like you can with the circled ones with the cover on it.... LOLLLLLLLL!!!!! (I'm laughing out loud for real!)

  • jay wrote on March 25, 2010

  • v4c wrote on March 25, 2010

LOL @ Jay! The Five Heartbeats!? Really! It's one of my fav movies actually but...huh? LMBO... EaZy - I've been forced to watch Centric...DirectTV doesn't have VH1 Soul. :-( Centric isn't nearly as good as VH1 Soul...

  • Melly Welly wrote on March 25, 2010

Yessir. I listen to local hip hop and R&B artists (New Orleans has great music), Prince, India Arie, Jill Scott, John Coltrane, Frank Sinatra, several movie Soundtracks, Sade, Alanis Morrissette, Lauryn Hill, PJ Morton, Erykah Badu, Outkast, Kanye. Yeppers, pretty much anything that isn't Country or Opera. LOL. I think sometimes it's good to branch out for a different sound. Gospel artists would do well to explore the artistic elements of other genres.

  • Tami wrote on March 25, 2010

First of all you guys are hilarious!! I can honestly say that I don't purchase anything but gospel. Now having said that, there are quite a few secular artists that I enjoy. I'm an old school 70's, 80's type of person and I'm a lover of jazz. I like the 'singers': India, Lauryn Hill (what in the world happened to her!), Jill Scott, that type of vibe. Erykah scares the bejesus outta me! When me and my husband are together I really don't want to hear 'the old rugged cross' ya know what I'm sayin'! I need to hear something soothing and easy on the ears. I love Jesus with everything within me and having a romantic night and enjoying my husband doesn't take away from my worship and lifestyle...it's called balance!

  • Michael Jenkins wrote on March 26, 2010

There is nothing wrong with listening to other genres besides gospel music. I am a music lover so I love all kinds of music, however it really depends on the content on the songs. If you are listening to something that mocks the word of God or anything like that, than turn it off. I am very careful not to listen to anything that sounds too much like the word, we are not of them so there should be a difference. Gospel music is my favorite type of genre but I love my rock, neo soul and even some pop. On the other hand, I balance it out, and I have bee convicted of a lot of songs because of the particular content. It is very important to listen to the content on the song, but I don`t think it matters as far as your walk with God PROVIDING that it sends a good message or based on Godly principals.

  • keith wrote on March 27, 2010

Thanx 4 keepin honest & real because i love music n general every genre pop rock R&b country... I luv 2 get my praise on w/ gospel music(esp. • Ed wrote on March 29, 2010

ok. i have been reading the posts and most everyone seems to listen to secular... This is a huge battle for me...are we crossing the line? When are we compromising? Shouldn't God be our all in all. If He is my God, my lover and my best friend, everything about me should want to please Him. In every facet of my life. How i dress. How i eat! How i present my self. What i watch and read and hear and listen to!!! Music, movies, tvs, books etc. I think when i say that i love Jesus, my life should be totally open to Him in the sense that everything i do, it should be according to His purpose and Will! His will for my life is far superior and far better. That said i struggle alot with music, especially listening to R&B and soul under the secular umbrella. I am thankful though that "Gospel Music", meaning Christian music has numerous genres so that when i get tired of listening Hillsong and the like, i can listen to Bebe, Cece, basically the Winans family, some Canton Jones, God's Image etc. Get fed up with it i can do rock, old school (CCM) and the new school. Even better, i can travel the world, listen to some christian reggae from the Caribbean Islands and also go to Africa! There is alot there. We have choices. Alot. And i use em all. Under the Christian umbrella, that is choices under the Christian Umbrella that exalts Christ as Lord and Savior and also exalts and encourages t Music he Church. To grow. To hang in there. And to do good. And story telling Than said. Its not always easy. Once in long while, i will stumble and listen to 70's soul. Does anyone else have the same opinion and struggle?

  • v4c wrote on May 19, 2010

I HIGHLY recommend the new Janelle Monae CD! I had to find this post just to tell you guys that, lol. It's THE BUSINESS! Classic even... Ed - I didn't listen to secular music for years after about 2000...I was experiencing my first adult spiritual awakening...really falling in love with God. I started listening again after I learned my limits...what I can and can't listen to...what songs alter my moods, etc.
