In The Lab: Kim Burrell Works On Haiti Project

Remember a few weeks ago when I reported that a bunch of artists were in NYC recording another relief song for Haiti?

Well, vocalist Kim Burrell, the Executive Producer of the track, recently posted a link to some behind-the-scenes footage of their process.  In it, she speaks with several of the participants about the significance of the project, including Tye Tribbett, Michelle Williams, Nikki Ross, Anaysha Figueroa, James Hall, Nancey Jackson, Anwar Robinson and more.

Check it out:

Whatd’ya think???

    1. Love KB. 2. WHY another Haiti relief song? 3. Love KB's music. 4. WHY another Haiti song relief two months after the earthquake? 5. Love (parts of) KB's transformation. 6. WHY yet ANOTHER Haiti relief song when three other songs have already been written, produced, and released? Isn't that like splitting the profits that are supposed to go to Haiti relief? Sigh....

well hallelujah! we needed a gospel version....this is the onli gospel version of a song for haiti i've ever seen. but anyway i'm kinda sidin wit tam tam-why another song and idk about splitting but what are the profits?? i kinda don get it.......

Actually, Kirk Franklin has a Haiti relief song... Question: Though I did donate money, am I selfish and hell bound cause I haven't purchased ANY Haiti relief songs (and I don't plan on doing it)? I sure hope not...LOL

  • dev wrote on March 26, 2010

I mean if it's to help a worthy cause then why not have as many song as it takes to make a difference. True it is two months after the initial quake but they still need help. They are still suffering now and will be for a while so anything we can do to help I so go for it.

  • dev wrote on March 26, 2010

I dont understand what you mean by splitting the profits. All the proceeds I have heard have been donated directly to the Red Cross and other Haitian based charities.

  • NY wrote on March 27, 2010

Doesn't matter about the timing of the song. The only thing that matters is the meaning behind it, and if it's in god's time. This song looks like it going to be hot, the little part at the end kinda got me hype towards the dropping of the song. I'm behind you KB, I'm ready when your ready!

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 27, 2010

What I mean by "splitting the profits" is that the time, effort, and money that went into making the song could have gone directly to earthquake relief. In other words, three relief songs is REDUNDANT. Kirk Franklin did a song. Simon Cowell did a song and now a third one? What can this song do that the other songs haven't already done? I mean, did people tell Kim B. that they would not donate to Haiti relief until she made her own Haiti relief song? A day late and a dollar short (AGAIN).

  • gospelmusicman wrote on March 27, 2010

Ok, first, I commend Kim Burrell for taking on this project. It doesn't matter HOW many songs are out there about the relief effort in Haiti. The effort is not LATE because there are two other songs out there raising money for the same effort. The effort is NOT LATE, you've just gotten TIRED of hearing about Haiti, but their situation is still there. If this song only raises a DIME, it's done more than I've done or most of us out there.....I've prayed but have not even raised a nickel for Haiti. It's a shame that we only care about world situations as long as they are in the public eye, but soon forget the people who are still struggling. There should be a song written every day for those who are still struggling. There should be something done everyday, no matter how much time it takes. Everyone gets "caught up" in the moment when a disaster happens, and then do what most people do: They forget about it. Congrats Kim! Do your thing, and I hope someone else uses their God given talents to do another song, and another song, and another until the job is done. As a matter of fact, just writing this has inspired me to get involved somehow, and I am going to sit down with my wife tonight to brainstorm! You all might want to do the same....

@gospelmusicman: Let's not make leaps or assumptions without being able to accurately justify such points, e.g., my seeming fatigue about hearing about Haiti's relief efforts or what I may or may not have contributed to said relief efforts. I do not question Kim's sincerity about wanting to help. I question the METHOD. I question the timing (too late). I question the logic of anyone who thinks that yet a THIRD song about the matter will increase attention to Haitian relief. I question one's ability to rationalize the notion that a THIRD song by a lesser-known, underappreciated gospel music artist--who just might(?) be using this project as a platform to expose her new image (gasp!)--will generate more attention toward the continued effort of Haiti relief. And I do not like to think this about one of the few gospel music artists that I still respect at this point in time. What's even more shameful is the notion that a song (alone) will raise attention toward such relief efforts. Singing songs brought down the Jericho wall, but food, clothing, and shelter given DIRECTLY to those who need fulfills the mission to help the poor and destitute. Make all the melodies one wants to while on the island passing out blankets, water bottles, and MONEY to rebuild Haiti.

@Tam Tam, again I say, do not focus on what others are doing or not doing, focus on what you can do. If you think you can do IT better than Kim or anyone else, then stop blogging and get down to business. @the comment: using this project as a platform to expose her new image (gasp!)–talking about making assumptions.....this tickles me. Plus, it seems my assumptions were right because you have yet to post what you've done for the relief effort. And since we are battling it out with words, you may be the perfect candidate to team up with to start a Haiti relief effort, I like your vigor....and you seem like someone who loves to fight, lets just put that fighting energy to good use! :) What relief effort do you have in mind?

  • dev wrote on March 28, 2010

    lol.

  • dev wrote on March 28, 2010

Lil' Mo is on this song too.

  • Michael Jenkins wrote on March 28, 2010

Nikki Ross is a amazing vocalist, that woman can sing the house down! This video looks good, I cannot wait to see the video.

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 28, 2010

@gospelmusicmann: Please avoid any attempts to inquire or control my words, behavior, and any demands to know my personal business. I know that trap right well: I say nothing, you assume nothing. I list all of my works, you claim that it's not good enough, too short, too inefficient, too this, not enough that. So no. There's a better spiritual and natural reward that your approval cannot match. Also, what a deflection with your "let's start a Haiti relief effort" to avoid addressing issue at hand. I stand by what I said concerning the redundancy of THREE Haiti relief songs and I would say so REGARDLESS of who did it. Your implication about the Haiti relief songs being a competition further exacerbates the redundancy of THREE Haiti relief songs. In case you were distracted, blog owner EJ introduced the topic with the question "Whatd'ya think???" And ergo, my thoughts.... And this is no verbal sparring of any kind. We'd have to be in the same league for that to occur...fairly.

  • gospelmusicman wrote on March 28, 2010

lol I truly love your spirit.....And I bow out. You won. Ego stroked.

  • Gayle wrote on March 29, 2010

I see the Kim haters are out in full force....Every time she does a project, she is hated upon. Then again, people should ignore the trolls. The trolls want to start fights among God's people instead of agreeing to disagree and leave it at that.

  • dev wrote on March 29, 2010

you doing too much. Fall back.

  • dev wrote on March 29, 2010

    lol @gospelmusicman

sigh....Tam Tam strikes again with more abominable comments with his or her crazy ideology. Doesn't matter if there are 100 songs out there. As long as the word is being heard that we need to help rebuild Haiti. Complaining that this is the 3rd song is nothing but childish. You should be happy people are trying to keep it alive so that others can continue to donate to the relief instead of donating one time and forgetting something ever happened. God-forbid you were over there, would you not want people to donate? It will take years to rebuild Haiti. Every cents counts. Why don't we let you come up with some ideas and I'll donate to whatever you come up with. Cause we all know you can do it since your knocking the idea of a 3rd song being made. smh, we gotta do better I agree @Gayle

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 29, 2010

Wowwwww! LOL! I'm getting way more glaze than I've earned or deserved! Abominable comments? Crazy ideology? Troll? LOLLLLL!!!! Classic! Whewwwwww! I save my (critical race) ideologies for the academic research circuit. Gospel music blogs (and EJ's is one of the more respectable ones and he appears to have enough discernment to spot a troll when he sees one... I'm still here ;-)) are my simple playscapes. It's not that serious to me but I own my opinion and I am much more teachable and open when criticism is constructive and not laced with condescension, e.g., "If you think you can do IT better than Kim or anyone else, then stop blogging and get down to business." We may disagree on those ideologies. But I did not call anybody's ideology crazy, abominable, or troll-like, esp. as unprovoked. It's still all good.... Y'all have truly ticked my fancy today! LOL! Make it a great day, saints! :-)

Why couldnt they just get on Kirk's joint.

  • Christina wrote on March 29, 2010

@Joseph Reaves maybe they weren't invited to be on Kirk's joint or they may have had prior engagments.

  • Joaquin wrote on March 29, 2010

It is not too late. I have several friends that just got back from Haiti. According to them, the destruction and conditions are abominable. Any effort on behalf of these artists to use their gifts to keep Haitian relief efforts on the American radar should be commended.

  • msshaylarenee wrote on March 31, 2010

I'm sorry, but why is Kim telling Musiq that she can, "pray to his voice." What?!?! Really?!? A comment like that as well as his response is indicative of something deeper. Something is seriously startling about what's going on in the gospel music industry and the Body of Christ as well.

  • v4c wrote on March 31, 2010

"pray to his voice"??? Someone explain what that was about cause I can't view the video at work... :-( My assumption is that she meant his vocal ability is soothing/gifted enough to have as a backdrop to her prayer time....not his songs and not that she views his voice as God... Someone please clear this up...

  • Keisha M. wrote on March 31, 2010

@gospelmusicman: "The effort is NOT LATE, you’ve just gotten TIRED of hearing about Haiti, but their situation is still there." ^That's exactly what it is, sir. Tell the truth, shame the devil. How can someone dare proclaim it's "too late"? Please tell that to the victims still presently suffering over in Haiti right now! Did people think that once the story faded from our news headlines that meant Haiti had been miraculously rebuilt, lost family members reunited, every person fed, every person clothed? The sheer ignorance of replies here continuously astounds me. GET A CLUE!! It's not just about a "song", it's a whole bigger picture here that's obviously above the thought & comprehension level of some posters here.

  • ebonisun wrote on March 31, 2010

Well, I can't wait to hear it. No, I won't say I will buy it, I have given already, but ya never know. Anyways, I want to hear the voices and I love me some Kim Burell so this is interesting. At first, I did say "another Haiti relief song?", but it's cool, those people are still hurting and these songs are usually nice and good feeling!

  • Tam Tam wrote on March 31, 2010

The Bible says to agree with your adversary quickly for a reason (Matthew 5:25). However.... @Keisha M.: I'm the bold "someone" who boldly declares that this effort, as sincere as it may be/is, is LATE: beyond the time of full efficacy. I'll entertain the notion that some things are done for personal fulfillment, meaning that for Kim, maybe this was her (best) way of helping the Haiti relief effort. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on that. The pity of your March 31st, 2010 on 9:56 am post is the equal ignorance and lack of tact in which you express your disagreement. It's totally fine to disagree. But keep it classy (and holy, if you are so capable). Again, mercy prevails in that I'll chalk up your ignorance as passion for the Haiti relief effort. And I sincerely hope that this song meets the expectations of those who claim that this song will bring more attention to the Haiti relief effort.

  • Gayle wrote on April 1, 2010

I'm gonna buy the song--and furthermore, these artists are trying to let us know not to forget Haiti because there are a lot of rebuilding to be done.

  • I.I.L. wrote on April 1, 2010

@Gayle: I wonder if Tam Tam bought a ticket to help with the relief effort. LOL P.S. Oh no, I just joined in the fight, gospelmusicman...LOL!
