The second week of BET’s Sunday Best continued with auditions in Detroit. I dunno if they simply chose to edit out the incredible performances, but… I don’t think I saw much that excited me.
At the judges table, Erica & Tina Campbell (Mary Mary) joined Donnie McClurkin this week. They were not giving any freebies, and I’m glad about it. Just cuz you can sing doesn’t mean you can be an artist.
Tina had some GREAT one-liners… my favorite was probably, to the woman who sang ”I Know I’ve Been Changed,” Tina responded “DEFINITELY take that to the Black History Program.”
I have two favorites from the night. One was Missy, the soft-spoken, but confidently sung young lady from the UK. The second was Brian Smith (the last contestant). He and I used to sing together (along with Jermaine Sellers) in Walt Whitman & The Soul Children Of Chicago. I wonder if this means that I’ve gotta audition for Sunday Best next year…
Anyway, I’m already excited for the episodes with the finalists in New Orleans (they’re taping now and some of the guest performers include Y’Anna Crawley and J Moss). That’s when the gettin’ gets good.
What did you think of the show?

SCC produced some legends lol. Another SCC alumni auditioned but he's way younger than you guys.
I was not impressed with the contestants this week ...May I have back Peter .".He tooush me."LOL.....Ok... I don't know if The Marys are all that good at judging....they had one liners and thats about it.You can see that Donnie has a keen sense of judgement...he knows the appropriate time to stop the contestant..I love his style. Overall ,this week was not earthshaking.
I wasn't really feeling this episode. I also watched last week & felt the same way (even as I attended the tapings in NO). However, I do appreciate the fact that they are being a bit tougher (not making it easy for most) and I love Donnie McClurkin as a judge. But I just don't know, maybe this show is getting a little old for me.
Mary Mary are not excellent singers so it was laughable to me to hear some of their critiques. Particularly Tina, as always. She told the woman with the loud red hair (who she also said needed Clairol...hmm) that she needed to watch her pitch, which is true, but Mary Mary stays pitchy while performing "God In Me" as simple as that song is. The young lady from UK who Tina called a "mess" sounded better than I've heard the 2 of them. You win a Grammy this yr and get a hit record (ironically titled "God In Me") and now you are qualified to talk to people any kind of way you want. No words for Donnie though, I was most shocked and disappointed by him.
Not many good contestants this week..Trust it will get better.Donnie is a good judge.Love him.The Marys are not quite there yet .Looking forward to other episodes.
i don't know...part of me has a fundamental problem watching 3 judges critique others, making comments that sound particularly stinging, but when people talk about them [the judges], they take to twitter and other outlets to fuss. i've never been much of a sunday best fan, but i have tried to watch from time to time and i often find myself being turned off (for a variety of reasons). i have seen episodes where judges have lambasted the clothing some contestants wore, when they themselves have worn questionable attire on national shows. i have heard the harsh comments, and yet have heard some of the judges recall the comments they received coming up and how it hurt their feelings and affected them. perhaps i don't get it; i'll admit that...but it just seems terribly odd to hear these one-liners hurled toward contestants, but yet let someone talk about a judge in the media/blogs and cats are falling out and quoting "touch not mine anointed" can't have it both ways...
I'm from Detroit and I didn't recognize anybody they showed on TV! LOLLLL! Just jokes, people.... So I'm new to watching SB and I catch the episodes online. Again, some of the reasons for rejections were interesting, to say the least. I guess my question is this: is there ANY ROOM for FINDING and GROOMING raw talent on this show?
ROR said: "but it just seems terribly odd to hear these one-liners hurled toward contestants, but yet let someone talk about a judge in the media/blogs and cats are falling out and quoting “touch not mine anointed” can’t have it both ways…" ROR: you just said something here.... I wholeheartedly agree.... It's like pledging a fraternity or sorority: it seems that one doesn't seem to be really made (worthy of inclusion) unless one is put through the same torture as earlier members.... You don't belong if you haven't suffered. But yet the same patterns are perpetuated....
I really enjoyed it, it was really funny seeing the constentants hit all those runs! the runs were on point, but you don`t have to do all that to just sing the song! Tina is my favorite judge, she is like the Simon of the group, she is too funny. My favorite line was when that guiy was doing all those runs, and he said "I can work on that" Tina replied with "get rid of them" HAHHA She is so funny, but she tells the truth, some of those contentants are too comical. I really liked that lady who had that neo soul to it, she really can sing I am enjoying the show, I hope it gets better :)
Changing the subject a little bit. I think EJ should post a youtube clip of him singing with the soul children of Chicago! Lol.
I second that, mylum! LOL... A solo spot would be my preference... Let's hear it, EJ!
Yesss I agree! lol
Was not liking the attitude from Tina (w/ this being a gospel comp). Anyways, I like the contestants they chose, I wasn't seeing too many that should have went on, was kind of disappointed, but I think it will get better. So mad at the contestants who were doing all the runs...they could have been in there!
I couldn't help feeling a little Detroit-pride while watching. I thought the contestants were as good as could be expected. Exciting to see a familiar face try out and make it!! Donnie is doing a great job as a judge, an excellent replacement for Bebe.
@all-- regarding the Soul Children video-- y'all are BUGGIN'. stick to the subject at hand! LOL
@EJ that ain't right! Watch the holy spirit reveal the hidden videos to the light! Lol
hmmmm...let me do some research. i used to own a Soul Children VHS - "Live and Blessed", but i don't think EJ is old enough for that one. *pulls out phone to see who i can text*, lol! i kid, i kid.
To Whom It May Concern, I love Sunday's Best and enjoy Kirk's since of humor and the way he supports contestants even if they don't get selected to move forward in the process. I must confess my mother and I are truly disappointed in Mary, Mary and Donnie (particularly Tina and Erica) regarding the harsh, unprofessional and most certainly non christian comments they shared with the contestants during the program that was televised on 4/11/10. The contestants are not professionals and in my opinion instead of being told their attire is not good, they are not Sunday's best --- how about telling them something positive as well as sharing why they cannot move forward in the process. Tina, Erica and Donnie say they are Christians how about not only talking the talk but walking the walk and showing more compassion and support toward contestants. Don't they recall how difficult it is to stand before a group of professional and sing let alone being judged. Tina, you your voice was very raspy -- were you not feeling good because you were very mean --- down right awful towards many of the contestants. Hope you feel better. :) In the past Tina, Eric and Be,Be Winans were all so kind which what I liked about the program over American Idol (i.e Simon- harsh, mean and cruel). I like the fact that Sunday's Best is/was a more Christian program and you could tell by the annointing of the judges. Thus far I feel like I am watching American Idol as Tina, Erica and Donnie are way to Cold in their comments to contestants. Even Kirk, continues to say something kind to the contestants after Eric and Tina have ripped them apart. I live in Chicago and had the pleasure of participating in a program entitled "The Music Experience" in which Tina and Erica particpated in an interview prior to performing and I recall thinking how wonderful these two sistuhs were in that they both were very humble and acknowledged God in all of their success. While watching Sunday's Best I though where did those two women go as the Tina and Erica I am now seeing on the program are not the women I admired. I hope someone reads this on the Sunday Best team and talks to the judges because at this point I doubt if I will continue to support the program. * I have heard and read several comments from other viewers sharing the same thoughts as I have regarding the judges. What did they do take a Simon from American Idol Class -- HOW TO BREAK A PERSON DOWN CLASS 101 In closing, my Mother and I thought Kim Burrell and the Nigerian gentleman who served as guest judges were ALSO very harsh and oftentimes Kim was laughing at the contestants and not very nice. The Nigerian gentleman was very harsh toward his own sisters and brothers. It saddens me to see us treat each other in such a manner and then call ourselves christians. (Is Sunday's Best supposed to be for Professional singers or Amatures?)
@relationship over religion...i totally co-sign your post! My sentiments exactly. There are those on this very blog that will defend these same artist to the death, but were is the outrage over how down right ugly Tina in particular was to some of the contestants. Some of her comments were even personal. Where are the accussations of "being judgmental" and unchristian"? Where are the cries for the judges to just pray for the contestants? Oh i forgot! they are "anointed" ministers, and mercy and compassion is reservered for them alone, even if they do something contrary to the word...sorry
I don't like the fact that all 3 judges are tryng to be a holy simon! stop trying to be AI and be sundays best. If you don't like the way the person sings just say NO, don't be rude or ignorant just to be funny or or try to get ratings. I hate that! Just be original and be kind, real but kind not smart or ignorant which is what I felt they were trying to do to some folks. Even is the person sounds horrible I didn't it whent hey told that guy never ever to sing again. Wrong wrong and wrong! Again this ain't AI. Which is why the I believe the rumors are true that alot of top gospel artist be hating on new talent that are up and coming and are not willing to share the light or offer advice...ect
I agree with alot o comments here about the harshness of the judges this season. I don't particularly think that Donnie is too harsh. He even preluded one of his comment by saying "I am usually not this hard . . .", and that contestant couldn't even remember what she was going to sing. But Tina was extremely offensive with her comments. One that really bothered me was when she said that one of the contestants needed Clariol. The contestant had bright red hair (to represent the Blood of Jesus). I was just watching the clip EJ sent about Yolanda Adams which links to a video my Mary Mary singing "You Brought The Sunshine" and Tina's hair was close to the same bright red. It is one thing to give constructive criticism. And some people really do need to hear the they cannot sing well enough to make the show. But there is a way to do it in Godly love. I was so glad that Kirk Franklin was there to somewhat soften the blow.
@Eyeswideopen....you are absolutely right! And to think, a few weeks ago, I was reproached for my comments about Mary Mary in another blog. The Word says that we will know them by their fruit! It did not help that Tina took to Twitter once criticism began to pour in during the airing of the show & suggested that viewers turn to TBN if BET was too much for us. Her arrogance would not allow her to set aside pride and admit she was out of line. I think people would have respected her, if had she acknowledged her sour attitude and maybe apologized. How ironic does this happen after they just had one of the year's biggest hits, "GOD IN ME". Is that the GOD IN YOU? L.O.L. I'm curious what this weekend's episode will look like.
Where are all the, Thou Shalt Not Judge,He Who Throw The First Stone, and You're Not Perfect BLOGGERS? Whenever I used the word Judge or Judgement in my comments on any blog, the criticizing I receive is unreal. This is a perfect example of celebrity privilege, and the fans who support, and defend them regardless of how they live their life as a Christian.
There's a difference between being constructive and rude. Tina never got that memo because she was rude and her comments made my stomach turn.
What Is Yall Problem The reason Why They Are SO Hard IS Just Like The Teachers You Hard In School That Were Strict but They Made You Do Your Best That's excatly what they are doing pushing contestants to the limit to bring the best out of there voice!!!!!And For Those Of You Who Wanna Say They aren't excellent singers Kirk Franklin,James Fortune and countless others say they respect and appreciate there voices!!!!And What Yall Don't Know Is Tina said she is very honest and she said if you can't sing she is gonna tell you and how are yall gonna say they aren't some of the best singers but every time they drop an album it shoots to the top of all charts and either are certified gold or plantitum which many gospel artists don't do!!!And For those of you who say they rip contestants apart they said on the monique show and they said a lot of time after the show they stay after for those who don't make it they pray and encourage and tell them to continue if they can really sang and if its meant to happen it will and erica says she gets they numbers to talk to them and encourage them as well!!!!GOD BLESS!!!!!
Oh my, Dorice, you are speaking my heart on this issue. Some where american culture as Really impacted the music ministry in a not so good way in regards to Christ like character. How stupid does it look when we behave like secular judges? It it shameful. Be honest, without Being rude. Truthfully, its about ratings. I support you in this move sis. Levester White
Freedimige Washer, Honesty is great, but as an award winning producer, my Christianity outweighs My success. My music is only the door opener to create influence and encourage Those. Listen, as a belevier, rudeness is never an option.
