The nominees for the 10th annual BET Awards were announced yesterday. The awards program recognizes the gospel genre in its Best Gospel Artist category. This year, nods in that category go to:
Marvin Sapp
The Anointed Pace Sisters
Kirk Franklin Presents Artists United For Haiti
Tamela Mann
Vickie Winans
Happy about Marvin Sapp, thrilled for the Pace Sisters (project was slept on– read my review for more info), satisfied about Tamela Mann and Vickie Winans. I dunno that the Haiti relief project should’ve been nominated. Don’t get me wrong– I love everything that it is, was and ever stood for… I just dunno that it should be put in the Best Gospel Artist category. Are we saying that, merely for being there, the participants are “the best” this year?
For me, this list is missing BeBe & CeCe Winans. After a 15-year hiatus, gospel’s most famous duo returns with the highest album debut of 2009, sales that kept them at #1 on the gospel chart for MONTHS, plus media exposure that included a performance on Oprah… and they’re not even nominated? What must one DO?! I don’t get the nominations criteria.
I wouldn’t be the only one, of course, as nominations are doled out by a select and secret committee comprised of… well, we’re not really told who. By the way, what’s with awards shows not telling us who’s doing all the awardin’?!
In any case, I’m predicting Marvin Sapp on this one. And after a record-breaking debut across all genres of music a couple of months ago, I think he deserves it.
This year’s BET Awards will be hosted by Queen Latifah and will be broadcast live from L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, June 27th at 8pm ET/7pm CST on BET.
What do you think of the nominees???

I would like to see a mixed performance of various artists. Similar to the performance that was on Sunday Best with Kirk, Kim, TIna, Yolanda and Donnie.
oh, BET Awards will get boycotted this year...how are you going to NOT nominate BeBe & CeCe after a fantastic year that they have had. I'm Hotter than fish grease!!! I will be alerting and contacting the National Commission of Artists Not Nominated At Award Show Because of Someone's Absentmindedness!!
LMBO @ Courtney! Please forward me their information so I can contact them when necessary!
BET is so oblivious when it comes to Gospel. Every year, they throw together a bizarre list of nominees and 2010 is no different. How did BeBe & CeCe get missed for a nomination? They had publicity, Oprah appearance, crossover hit, etc...the works. I did not quite enjoy the cd as much I would have liked but they've certainly been on the radar more than say -- the Pace Sisters. How in the world did THEY get a nomination? It just makes no sense. Kirk Franklin & Artists for Haiti...it doesn't even make sense. So if that SONG wins, does everyone featured on it get their own BET Award too? Because if so, that can be good.
Folks, when has the BET Awards ever made sense, especially in They do just as bad in other categories. For example, Justin Beiber got a nomination!!!!
Please forgive my previous post full of errors. This is what I meant to say: When has the BET Awards ever made sense, especially in Gospel. They do just as bad in other categories. For example, Justin Beiber got a nomination! @Courtney, I am with you Bro.
I am a little confused on the Pace Sisters, Tamela Mann, and Vickie Winans, although I respect and like them all as gospel artists. I think there were other projects (Bebe and Cece for sure) that deserved nominations. The Haiti Project? I can see why BET would do that...so I'm not as surprised. Of course, we (the gospel community) can't say too much...look at how BOTCHED UP the Stellars were this year with their nominations and methods for being nominated....the good performances were their saving grace. So I don't expect BET to do a GOOD job of nominating GOSPEL artists...come on now...
why does this list look like some random BET guy went to Best Buy, looked in the gospel section and just chose some names that at least SOUNDED familiar. And then another exec flippantly said, hey throw in that Haiti relief song also... since the gospel industry finally showed that they cared about humanity and not wealth for once...
*Long Sigh* BET has always been, and unfortunately will remain BET-off point. I am afraid that my already lowered expectations have just sunk lower...SMH #thatisall
I agree with you Courtney. No BeBe and Cece? They usually go for the most cross over artist in gospel, so I knew they would be on TOP of the list.
Where to begin? After last year's rushed, almost derogatory "tribute" to MJ last year, the BET Awards simply need to GO. FAR. FAR. AWAY. Period. But I'll play: Where's Israel Houghton's The Power of One? Am I expecting too much? I guess I am.... From this rather senseless, illogical list of nominees, here's how I see it: Tamela Mann should get it. Marvin Sapp will get it. Rationale: I think Tamela gave a nice mix of within-gospel genres. She's refreshing and she's been consistent and uncompromising. If record sales and cross-over popularity (read: watered down, pronoun gospel) is the criteria for winning, then Marvin Sapp fits that... and so does BeBe and CeCe.
I agree with the list but I am wondering why Bebe and Cece are not listed? Also why is Karen Clark not nominated? I could be bias because she is my favorite singer but it seems to me she gets overlooked at times, she has a amazing voice. No surprise to see Marvin,he seems like he is a favorite by many. I hope Kirk wins, I love that song about Hattie.
Kirk hasn't had a album out in years, Marvin's album just came out (he can't be riding on the success of the last one still, that and its singles shouldn't qualify for this year). They might as well had thrown MaryMary in there. LOL. BeBe & CeCe should have been nominated. But look at all of the other catagories too. They didn't only do this with the gospel artist. Lil Kim got nominated for Best Female Rap artist and she ain't had a album in like 5 years! And most of the artist nominated don't even have albums or have never had albums out, You got Drake & Nick Minaj, then you got the artist who's album JUST came out... Monica & Usher. BET PLEASE PULL THE PLUG! PLEASE! If I have to witness the greats like Glady's Knight & Chaka Kahn sit in the audience and see Young Money perform Every Girl, again I'm personally boycotting BET NATIONALLY!
I'm sure Marvin Sapp will be the token gospel artist for the night's performance line-up.
BEBE AND CECE NEED TO BE ON THE LIST!! I MEAN COME ON!! BEBE AND CECE COULD BE IN FOR THE ANOINTED PACE SISTERS...HELLO?!
@v4c...i sure will :) @Novella and Minister Sam, thanks...let's get our picket signs saying "WE WANT BEBE & CECE NOMINATED" for BET Awards Nite...meet me out front of the auditorium:) @ me, it sure does...they did eeny meeny miney mo, and chose gospel artists without any thought or research. and @Tam Tam...if "so called" watered down pronoun gospel brought me to Christ , AS IT DID...then keep that kind of Gospel coming !!! becuz JESUS JESUS JESUS ,HOLD MY MULE didn't do it! LOL
I think that it is awesome for the Pace Sisters to be nominated. They have been in the industry for a long time and deserve to be listed with everyone who was nominated. Also, it is really amazing that everyone is focusing on who should and should not be nominated and not looking at the impact and lives that these people are able to reach. In my book, they (those nominated and not nominated) are winners because they are winning souls for Christ! I am praying for the people who are hating and pitting the Gospel artist against each other. God bless!
*takes a deep breath, holds it a few seconds, and lets out a long DEPRESSING SIGH* Dear BET, Please go back in time about oh 10 years ago and bring me back some REAL television Please and thank you!! Sincerely yours, Davia C. Now, about these nominations: I don't know WHY yall gettin mad about the nominations,it's BET for cryin out loud!!they do everything in ghettoness and disorder!! Yall know they was gonna throw together some WHACK behind nominees in the gospel category.please, they don't even show the best gospel category...shoot BET been a hot mess since they took AJ & Free off 106 and Park...Marvin Sapp is gonna win for sure. "Best in me" is an incredible song, and he's probably gonna perform it,if they even have a gospel performer after the uproar the gospel community put up when Mary Mary performed last year...and he's probably gonna do like 5 minutes and they'll cut it. @courtney: you had me rollin!! You're right though, that "watered down" gospel as it was put brought me to christ as well, so I'm like you : more please!!!
i'm not surprised. AT ALL. BET not only jacked up this category but the "other" ones as well. can't Dr. Bobby Jones go down the hall and get them together? lol. i'm sure the Haiti project was thrown in because everyone knows who Kirk Franklin is and Tamela Mann is known to most from the Tyler Perry productions. i look at it this way - no matter WHO was nominated, Marvin Sapp will win AND will be the sole Gospel artist performance ...especially if Shirley Ceasar is busy. you know she doesn't miss a BET production. i'm just saying.
Well.....what is there to be confused about??? Yes I'm sure Bebe and Cece did do some good project's; but its about recognizing and nominating other gospel artist, who indeed deserve it aswell. I think there are many gospel artist out there who are very good and talented who deserve to be nominated and don't get the recognition they deserve. I LOVE the Pace Sister's and I definetly think and believe that they desreve to be recongnized, Tamela Mann aswell. So what that being said GODBLESS ALL.
THANK YOU!!!! YOU ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RIGHT!! I'M GLAD THERE IS SOME1 else besides myself, who is on here speaking with some sense.
