I’ve gotten a bunch of emails and seen a ton of comments asking whether the voting for BET’s Sunday Best actually counted for anything. Specifically, people have pointed out that they saw footage from the finale before the finale even aired, or that the finale was pre-taped so our votes couldn’t have mattered much.
To clarify for everyone: this year (like last year), BET taped the finale early. At that time, they taped TWO versions of the final segment, in which the winner is announced– one with LeAndria Johnson winning and one with Elder Goldwire McLendon winning.
Based on who had the most votes, BET aired the version of the finale featuring that finalist as the winner.
Just a little TV magic.
Anyway, I hope that clears up any misgivings you’ve had about the program’s integrity, at least as it relates to the public vote.

EJ, I wonder why they didn't just pre-tape the performances for the finale show and do the chatty portions/reveal live. AI does that stuff all the time. Would it have been that much more expensive to fly folks back in for a day or two?
Out of respect to the viewing and voting public the finale should be taped live period. I
EJ - It really clears things up for me. Because both of them were in Philadelphia the night before...and I said...how can this be? Thanks for the clarification
I'm sorry, but this is not the way to decive viewers like that. And I also think that the finale should have been live. I think it was a cheap Way of doing things. I think it was a slap in the face to the public. I expected this from BET because they do things backward for a network.
EJ...What are your thoughts re the fact that the house that LeAndria said she had lost did not belong to her?In an interview at the end of the season she said she had rented the house. There is a huge diffrence there...The viewers were sympathetic towards her because of her hardluck story.I think that was rather misleading.Your Tiffany is a better singer(LOL)
although this KIND of makes sense from a logistical standpoint to tape two finales, it does take away from the integrity of the competition. even though the fact that they tape two finales has been explained over and over again, it does lend to the theory that the winner had been pre-selected. please note that I don't believe this theory but i can't knock those that do...
@ EaZy I agree with you. It takes away from the integrity of the competiton when the show is pre-taped. You take the time to vote, BET should take the time to present the finale "Live" to the public.
That doesn't clear up the fact that on page 10 of the June 14-21 Jet magazine, was a picture of Kirk Franklin on finale night, however they printed that there were still 3 remaining contestants. So they had finale pictures, but they did not know that Durward was eliminated? When was the finale taped?
I own a house, and I also rent. I can tell you if lost either of them I would be devastated, and it would not matter to me that I didn't own the home if it was my rental. To have everything you own taken away, and then have to start over from scratch is just difficult. So, I don't think she meant to deceive anyone. I think the term "home" is just a term she used to describe her personal space on this Earth where she lived her life. But you didn't ask me, LOL
First of all, the show is taped within a two week period. You can see most of the eliminated contestants in the audience at the next round. To me, it's like a spelling bee- when you are eliminated but you can stick around for the rest of the competition. Ironically, theyt tape Bobby Jones the same way-three episodes in one night. You can also tell that the finale is pre-reocrded, because the reactions are lackluster. Think about when Fantasia won AI- she was crying, dancing; it was a surprise. On Sunday Best, the reactions are rehearsed. The votes do count, and the intergrity of the show was not comprimised because they aired the ending, based on the results.
I agree- this was the cheaper way to do it- and in order for things to change, we must continue to support gospel programs on BET and ask for more of the same so that sponsors and other gospel greats can put their 'two cents"in. Remember, Mary Mary and Kirk Franklin are the Executive Producers of the show (aka they kick in the dough) but they can do but so much. While I don't agree that the show is great, I understand why it " is what it is". This is television, and no matter how sanctified it seems, it must meet the mass appeal status to stay on.
Yall it's BET what do you expect. let me say that again "It's BET!" Well is that Why Elder Goldwire had that look on his face.....? Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezus (donnies voice)
I admit that I wish the finale would have been live. But I'm not bothered about it enough to expect much of anything sane from BET. I mean, after all when was the last time they did something reasonable, in pure excellence & correct? *Blank Stare* Just because it's a "christian" show doesn't mean that their "business" of television/broadcasting has changed. @jay- I love the Donnie voice! lolol
I LIVE in an apt, if i'm put out for whatever reason, that my house. Come on people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're giving away an AUTOGRAPHED copy of Kirk Franklin's "The Blueprint"! Enter here.... http://bit.ly/aheWXc
i just wanna see the ending that was taped for if Elder Goldwire had won...
right...that's what I was thinking too- we will probably never see his ending of the finale, but I'm pretty sure Elder danced and praised God!
