Troy's Recap: Sunday Best Picks Two — The Crossover

Troy LillyThis week, I wanted to give you a Sunday Best double-recap of sorts… I have a little somethin’ to say about the show, and will do so later, but first, Troy Lilly is back with another great recap of last night’s episode…

*     *     *

We’re now very close to crowning a winner for season three of BET’s Sunday Best, and last night there was more impressive singing and even a little dancing.  But not without a couple surprises.  More on that later, though.

If you’ve been watching this season you know how the show works– Kirk Franklin introduces the guest musical artist for the week, they perform, and then the contestants hit the stage, right?  Well not when the guest artist is Israel Houghton.  The man behind the success of Israel and New Breed ushered the audience into worship with his version of “Moving Forward.”  For a moment it looked like we wouldn’t be able to move forward but, after a short reprise, we returned to the regularly scheduled programming, for a while.

The two-part show was graced with another great performance by Brian Courtney Wilson, who stopped by to sing “All I Need” from his breakthrough debut album Just Love.  As Kirk said, if you haven’t heard of him you’ll certainly be blessed by his music.

For last night’s episode the theme was “crossover,” blending traditional gospel songs with secular songs that feature inspirational messages.  Each of the three contestants were to sing a “secular” song during the first half and a “gospel” song in the second half.  I was quite curious to see how this week’s theme would play out as I believed it would further distinguish each singer’s versatility – or lack thereof.  But hey, what do I know?

Tina Campbell, Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin held it down as judges once more.  Kirk also mentioned there would be “hard judging.” I’m not so sure that’s what we got. But this is how it went down:

Durward Davis – “Change the World” and “I Need You Now”
Earlier this year, EJ explained in a post on Sunday Best rules that contestants have little say in what songs they sing.  Durward was given an Eric Clapton song from a movie soundtrack to sing first.  I am certain he would have chosen a different song.  That being said, he made the most of an unusual song choice.  For the limited amount of time he had, Durward really brought “Change the World” to a climax and embraced the melody.  He was clearly uneasy after the performance, though he maintained a smile while singing.  For round two, he took on Smokie Norful’s gospel ballad which is no easy task, but he nailed that, too (in my opinion).  Even after his voice was about to give out, he kept giving his all until the very end.

LeAndria Johnson – “Heaven Help Us All” and “I Love the Lord”
I’m guessing a lot of folks are happy the judges don’t kick people off the show when they forget words, because if that were true LeAndria would’ve gone home tonight.  During “Heaven Help Us All – a song made famous by Stevie Wonder – the normally unflappable LeAndria stumbled through the lyrics of both verses.  But her voice remained intact (for the most part), and if I wasn’t such a huge Stevie fan I may not have realized she shuffled and omitted words. It surely never showed on her face.  LeAndria’s second performance was a victory lap – figuratively and literally. This time her words and vocals were in sync. The surprise wasn’t the judges’ reactions but hers.  After her stirring rendition of “I Love the Lord” she dropped her microphone and danced across the stage for about 30 seconds.  Yolanda and Donnie cut a step, too.

Elder Goldwire McLendon – “Falling in Love with Jesus” and “Oh, Happy Day”
Elder knew he had to rise to the competition a bit after a less-than-stellar performance last week.  I’m happy to report that that he didn’t forget the words last night!  However, I’m not sure how his first song qualified as secular since it’s a love song about Jesus.  I still have a big question mark in my mind here– “Change the World” vs. “Falling in Love with Jesus”?  Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get it.  Aside from my gripes with the song, Elder McLendon certainly conveyed his love for God when he sang.  His tone and approach mirrored what we’ve seen from him every week, and of course, the anointing was on him.  Wrapping up the performance portion of the night, he sang the Edwin Hawkins song that introduced gospel music to the mainstream.  Again, I was amazed at how tight and consistent Elder’s delivery was in relation to other weeks on the show.  He continued to wow judges.  Donnie was reduced to tears.

At the end of the night only LeAndria Johnson and Elder Goldwire McLendon advanced to become the final two.

While I wish both LeAndria and Elder Goldwire the best going into this season’s final round, I strongly disagree with Durward Davis being eliminated.  The best way I can defend my opinion is with the judges’ own words.  From the start of this competition the judges have repeatedly praised Durward’s ability to paint pictures and take people on a journey with his songs.  He especially rose to the challenge last night by tackling a vague secular song.  He might as well have sung “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper…he may have even been better off singing that.  I believe his performances are always complete while other performers give me 1:30 that feels exactly like 1:30 into a song.  I’m sad to see him go, but I’m confident he’ll be successful.  Again, I’m so thrilled for LeAndria and Elder Goldwire.

Furthermore, the judging has lacked tangible content to me. I’d love to hear more advice for improvement that is applicable for the folks who go home as well as the folks who stay.  Everyone is in a position to improve.  We all love gospel music and we want singers to be balanced – trained and anointed so the anointing doesn’t have to do ALL the work.

It’s very exciting to see this season drawing to a close.  So, between LeAndria and Elder McLendon, who’s it gonna be?

I KNOW you guys have a lot to say.  And we want to hear you!

Ah thanks Troy, great recap! You pretty much summed it up for me LOL! I was stuck on the Elder's "secular song" too, but I enjoyed his performance..he got competitive huh? :-) Also, I was hearing the judges comments and I guess they just agreed to say all good things at this point about the contestants' performances. I caught the LeAndria "stumbles", probably b/c of my love for Stevie Wonder songs too LOL! But she SANG "I love the Lord"!!!!! Um, I was so loving the Brian Courtney Wilson song...I gotta go and purchase that and listen to the others....I slipped! I wanted him to sing longer though, I really did!!! I remember this point in the competition from the last season, so bittersweet as we near the end.....like a good book/movie, but here we go!

Good job Troy!!! Sunday Best goes into another realm with each additional episode.Last night was spectacular..the judges are certainly having a good time, and why not?..I especially love Donnie's exprssions. That said... I enjoyed all three contestants....Durward was good but as we said last week ,he is forgettable. Le Andria..we all see that she struggled again this week with the first song but came back with that Gospel song. Elder nailed it with that first song OMG.As one blogger says,,she attended the taping and when Elder gets on stage ...its just diffrent. The praise goes on sometimes for half an hour. We will see what happens ..But I am still on Elders Team. God bless.

great recap troy...for some reason this episode did not air on my tv :(. but from what ive read it sounds like soome shady biz is goin down with the picking of elders secular song. i may be completely wrong but from the outside looking in it looks the odds were stacked in the elders favor idk BET.. but im happy that leandria is there durward we will see yu again..

Mornin', all! :-) Still waiting to watch online. Surprised to hear that DD didn't make the final 2. And from the recap, interesting song choices. But on top of all that, my FAVORITE Israel Houghton is on the show so I MUST watch for that alone. Get it together, BET on Blast!

  • Novella wrote on June 7, 2010

It was wonderful seeing Israel and Brian, but Brian's set was too short!!! I'm disappointed Durward didn't make it, but I hope somebody put this brother in the recording studio soon. I have a feeling that the Elder will take home the prize and God Bless Him! Overrall, good show.

  • NIkki wrote on June 7, 2010

I enjoyed the top 3. I do feel that Elder and Le'Andria deserve their spots even though I understand it may have been difficult for the judges. Durward is very consistent! I'll say it again Durward is VERY consistent, which actually may not have worked in his favor. His consistency was predictable. I really believe there is more to his artistry than he displayed. He's got SKILLZZ but he remained very laid back through many of his performances which wind up being...only performances. (case in point of the comments made, but not limited to: "You are very professional," "You're a seasoned singer," "You are ready for this." The barometer of his performances never changed. Elder and Le'Andria have been dynamic from the beginning, constantly surprising you and seizing the moment to make you throw up your hands or even laugh from being tickled every now and then. They know how to stretch and use various parts of their instrument and their life to pour you into the heart of God's presence.

  • ebonisun wrote on June 7, 2010

@Nikki...I agree with you about Durward's "consistency" vs. Elder and LeAndria's "moments" constantly surprising you....that might just be it! At this point in the competition it just gets really hard to send someone home. I had lots of "tickled" moments from last night's performances....I gotta go back and see them again at some point today...so glad I didn't miss last night's episode....still bitter that Brian's set was so short.....yep!

  • Honestly wrote on June 7, 2010

Based on the performances last night, I agree with the judges' decisions, however, I do have a problem with the Elder's "crossover" song...both Leandria and Duward would have done a better job if they were singing about Jesus! This IS a gospel competition. I think that gave the Elder an unfair advantage. However, I cannot take anything from the Elder's performances last night. He did his good singing and performing, and of course, ministering! My pick for Sunday's Best is either of them at this point. I am very excited to see what happens next week, and how well they sing and minister....

  • v4c wrote on June 7, 2010

*sniffing* Do I smell FISH?! Now, I love me some Elder...but how in the ham sandwich is "Falling in Love with Jesus" a secular song? Are you kidding me? This reminds me of the second round of top 3 performances on American Idol back in Season 5. They gave my pick to win, Elliott Yamin, "What You Won't Do for Love" to sing and gave the others American CLASSICS..."Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "You are So Beautiful". SMH! Could the song picks have made it any MORE obvious who the final two would be??? Question: How many of you know Eric Clapton's, "Change the World"? Another Question: How many Eric Clapton songs do you know? A Better Question: How many of you know who Eric Clapton is and could pick him out of a line up? This just wasn't a fair battle! Remember the shoot out scene in the movie, Harlem Nights? Durward was the guy with the whack gun! How was he gonna win with that?! LOL! I totally forgot to watch SB last night cause I was eating crabs with my Mom...understandable, right? LOL. But I did look up this season's SB clips on YouTube. And based on the number of views that LeAndria and Elder received over Durward, I knew he had gone home. :-( At this point, I don't care who wins. I believe all 3 of them will do extremely well.

  • Tam Tam wrote on June 7, 2010

Hey, v4c! I do know who Eric Clapton is and I do know the song and I like the song and I could pick him out from a line-up ("Layla" ;-) LOL! . However, I completely understand your frustration.... Still waiting for the episode to post on BET on Blast.... sigh....

  • lady E wrote on June 7, 2010

First of all, I love sundays best. Now I know I am going to catch a lot of flack for this next comment but its only my opinion. I think that Durward singing "I need you now" was not all that good. I dont know if he was feeling bad from the first song or what. But I just did not dig his rendition of I need you now. I agree that the elder singing "falling in love" was not right. There is nothing secular about that song. But he killed it none the less which really is the objective. To sang the songs they give you. My pick is Leandra even though I know they will give it to the Elder. When she sang "I love the Lord" It was straight worship in my bedroom last night! She is powerful. She straight killed that song. I love when Whitney sings it in the preachers wife. But Leandra tore it up. Looking forward to the finals!

  • Tam Tam wrote on June 7, 2010

Hi, Lady E: I just watched LeAndria's rendition of "I Love The Lord" on YouTube (thanks, v4c! ;-) ) and what made her "performance" so great was exactly what Tina said: LeAndria's honesty, sincerity, and pure grit. She's authentic and undeniable. "I Love The Lord" is in my top 3 of my favorite (gospel) songs of all time. So I don't tolerate too much playing with this song, meaning that if a person ain't real for Jesus, then don't even try to sing the song! Just don't! LOL

  • v4c wrote on June 7, 2010

Tam Tam, I think you are a part of the minority though, lol. I can pick him out of a line-up (just from catching him on TV over the years) but I don't know ANY of his songs.

  • MichaelDixon wrote on June 7, 2010

just watched leandria's performance on youtube of i love the lord...all i can say wooow this lady is something special wow i really hope she wins(even though this season has been setup for elder to win) but this lady is AMAZING ugh this is frustrating.

  • Tenesha wrote on June 7, 2010

The show was great last night and the final two (fair or unfair) were just a s I predicted. I must say...Israel's performance caught me off guard as I was anxiously awaiting Brian Courtney Wilson's perfomance. When Israel did 'Moving Forward' I was truly taken 'in'. Then...Brian blessed us with 'All I Need'! It was beatifully performed but just way too short. I was on the edge of couch wanting more. I'm sure he'll get his due air time soon!

  • Troy (UrbanSophistic) wrote on June 7, 2010

@ v4c I just can't!! The sniff, the ham sandwich, the lineup. I. Just. Can't! LOL! You're too funny.

  • Keisha M. wrote on June 7, 2010

I must say that this entire 3rd season of "Sunday Best" has been anti-climatic for me. In my opinion, the talent and competition level of seasons 1 & 2 were greater. You can say it was set-up since the audition phase for both LeAndria and Elder McClendon to be in the finals. And...SURPRISE SURPRISE! Who's in the Top 2? LeAndria and Elder McClendon. [-insert blank expression-] It was almost a waste of time slot & production money to even assemble a Top 20 to eliminate through. The judges (even mean ole Tina, shocking) have allowed favoritism to dwarf any impartiality and that's gonna be the downfall of this program in future seasons -- if it lasts.

  • Carole wrote on June 7, 2010

Duward is a nice singer. He is very skilled. I don't believe, however, that he has any more commercial viability than Ruben Studdard did on American Idol (for any number of reasons). Perhaps he will secure a contract or get involved with gospel plays? ?? Who knows. Whatever happened to Dontavius(sic?) from the last season? He sang skillfully but .... This day and time needs ministry, anointing.... After last seasons debacle, I am very grateful that Pastor Donnie, Yolanda and Tina (coupled with a fantastic band and background singers) let the world know that there is a difference with the real gospel. Skillful yes-but coupled with the pure, unadulterated annointed-will break every yoke and loose every burden. Thank God.

  • Renee' wrote on June 7, 2010

I'm in "mourning" today that Durward didn't make top two :( That's just not right.

  • Amazing wrote on June 7, 2010

I am also thinking that they are looking for some one who has a total package..that is not only able to sing but is marketable. Elder is able to sell himself when he speaks and he has a good command of the stage. Just a thought.

  • v4c wrote on June 7, 2010

Troy - I'm glad you enjoyed it! :-) Renee' - Let's tear our robes and put on sackcloth! LOL! We deserve sympathy today...

  • jay wrote on June 7, 2010

I hate to say this but Keisha M might be 100 % right! This is soley based on lastnights performance only. DD and Leandra should be in the finals. I love the elder but based OFF LASTNIGHTS PERFORMANCE The Elder did not bring it like DD & Leandra. Falling in love with Jesus was a crossover song? OMG! The fact that tina mention to the elder he was in th position not because of his age makes me suspect that he is. Based off performamce and the last 2weeks i'm sorry but DD was robbed bigtime! DD won the first round of songs and Leandra won the 2nd! and this will not be popular but bring back Bee Bee aka the black simon cowell. Donnie is too overdramatic 4 me. " can u go to tina first" I love the Elder but I just don't think he deserves 2b in the finals based off lastnights performance and based off the Judges comments.

  • jay wrote on June 7, 2010

Ps This is the Florida election all over again! Durward is Al Gore and the Elder is Bush... We got robbed!!!!!! :-(

  • browngirl wrote on June 7, 2010

I agree with Jay. Please bring Bebe back. I really cant stand the preaching after Elder's performance each Sunday. The contestants need some sound critique that can help them. I cant stand the political correctness at times. Anyway I wish the finalists all the best.

  • Phil Parrish wrote on June 7, 2010

Great recap Troy! I totally agree with the observation of the judges critiques this year.. We need better directives as gospel artist esp. in a competition that mirrors "American Idol". I ONLY want to address this notion that Elder McCledon hasn't earned his spot or that "he is just too old to receive such praise and opportunity to be a finalist in this competition". He is definitely without question "Sunday's Best!" He has not snuffed out Durward's opportunity of becoming a great Gospel Artist, because Durward is going to do great things in Gospel Music! If the CHURCH can see this as a "GOD MOMENT" rather than an "Old Man whose about one step away from the grave- trying to rob a young man of this dreams" moment... then WE ARE IN TROUBLE! God has definitely preserved Elder for this time and his performaces are not polished by far, but they have shown that he can hang with the best of those who claim to be the next "Sunday's Best". Sunday's Best Representin in 2010!

  • busy04 wrote on June 7, 2010

I absolutely loved Israel Houghton & Brian Courtney Wilson, even though the latter looked a little afraid or some other expression :) All 3 of the contestants are very gifted. I pray good things follow them all. I shall not comment on the final 2. God bless!

  • TruthBeSpoke wrote on June 7, 2010

I am so disenchanted with SB this season. Week after week, I have seen some amazing talents passed over because of this Goldwire character. I'm left scratching my head, asking "WHY". I don't get it. Perhaps you have to be there...but whatever that man has does not translate through the camera. He is a generic version of the gospel of our grandparents generation, much like any other person his age. In his non-uniqueness...BET...has sought to make him a some sort of phenomenon. It feels gimmicky...and to my utter surprise...everyone seems to fall for it. Usually I'm with the "fresh kids. what comes next kids"...but I'm with it on Elder McClendon. I'm not saying he doesn't have anything to offer...maybe on Sunday morning in someone's pew. He sound like any uncle, grandpa, grandma..aunt. The industry doesn't really need him. Its frustrating. Donnie gotta preach everytime he sing. The audience gotta shout as if on que. Is there a sign that reads "Shout Now"?

  • Jazzie wrote on June 7, 2010

First of all I would like to say, "To God Be the Glory!" I believe that if you call a show Sunday Best it should be solely GOSPEL MUSIC! We are trying to reach the sinner not join up with them. I don't listen to secular music and don't care at all for it. No, I am not against contemporary gospel music but everything has its place. I am proud to see Elder advance it is what the music industry need and the Body of Christ. He has a message in the life that he has lived with the Lord. One thing that I would hate to see is the person win then slip over into the secular world and abandon Gospel altogether. God bless you all.

  • pjones wrote on June 7, 2010

Psalm 75:6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. Now-Saints, we know where it comes from. I'm not suggesting that God hasn't favored DD, because he's blessed above & beyond Sunday's Best! And he was blessed to go as far as he went. But, so far God has chosen those two as the finalist. I also think, maybe Elder has been rejected and picked over throughout his life and God say's because you dared to keep going and carry out my gospel message "I'm going to take you where no one thought you would go". I need to do the extreme so that no one but God get the credit. We don't know... but God does. I salute all three of them, and I pray that who ever wins, does all that this platform affords them and give God all they have!

  • Tam Tam wrote on June 7, 2010

Finally BET on Blast has posted the episode. Got to see my FAVORITE singer Israel Houghton! I fast forwarded to DD's Eric Clapton song. He sang it decently. He should be in the top 2. Elder is a show/fan favorite. But Sunday Best? Nah.... And please do not read that to mean that I think he shouldn't have been in the competition. But the reality is that while we enjoy him so much and it's alright that he brings REAL old-school hymnals back in style and he's a sharp dressed Caleb, his versatility is limited, in comparison to the other finalists. DD is probably the most versatile of the threesome. If it were my choice, LeAndria would still win. In fact, will SB ever let viewers call in their votes a la American Idol on day?

  • TJM wrote on June 7, 2010

I agree with Tam Tam. Duward absolutely earned a spot in the Top 2...he is the most versatile of all three singers although Leandria has an "it" factor that is indescribable. Her authenticity is magnetic. Taking nothing from Elder Goldwire, but he is not Sunday Best. An anointed elder that we should respect and honor? Yes. But I don't see anything beyond that. Although Sunday's decision (and some others) has certainly given me pause re: the judging this time, I still can't wait to see the finals. Leandria gets my vote.

  • holyskinnyboy wrote on June 7, 2010

If SB is smart, they will give the title to Elder. Not because he should win (I think Leandria is clearly the winner here), but because they can then have two winners. Let me explain. What American Idol has been doing lately is "allowing" the underdog to win so that they can have the title to help boost them, while the "runner-up" will do well without the title and sell albums galore. Catch it? They've been doing that for quite some time. Give the underdog the title and publicity of winning, while they already know the runner-up (Adam Lambert) will sell millions without the title. AI producers got tired of people truly losing on the show, only to make it huge without them (Jennifer Hudson, Daughtrey) so they figured "We'll create our own losers that become famous so no one can say "you don't have to win Idol to become something....." Now you get the game? Enter Goldwire winning, and Leandria being runner-up. Alas, two winners for the price of one.

  • Gayle wrote on June 7, 2010

Truth Be Spoke, as in the response to your comment. "The industry does not need Elder Mc Clendon," Well, you might as well say that the industry did not need people like Shirley Casear, Albertina Walker, Dorothy Norwood, Bobby Jones, Jessy Dixon or the other elder statemen and women jn this industry which you think they should be cast aside because of their age. Come on now....give me a break. I'm really sorry that Durwood is not among the top two and people need to move on and deal with the fact that the best two people deserved to be there. One was dealing with homeless issues, the other is a senior citizen who want to make it know that the elderly has talent too. I hope that Christians should wish them both well, pray for them and support them, and not hate.

  • jay wrote on June 7, 2010

No one should say anything about the elders age. My judgement is soley based on lastnights performance only and if I judge it based off of that and THAT ONLY then DD and Leandra are my two finalist. No if and or butts about it. Performance not age, favortism Donnies multiple faces, his shouting tina's comments about the elders age. BUT PERFORMANCE. I respect the Elder and he def deserve to be on the should and def deserve to be in the top 5.Buit the show was designed to judge talent, performance, connection & delivery not annoiting. The Elder is annointed, can sing and deliver but BASED ON LAST NIGHTS PERFORMANCE HE WAS NOT SUNDAY BEST. If leandra didn't shout with the judges, and the audience. Did not Kirk feel anything? Lol She would not have been in the finals.. Sorry And for the person who mentioned Shirley Ceasar....ect get a history book she started at a young age....!

  • Leda wrote on June 7, 2010

Once again, this was a great recap! I am very sad to see Duward go as well, and his consistency is unmatched. I don't know what the judges are looking for. In spite of Tina Campbell's comment, Elder Goldwire does stands out, because of his age. Could I listen to him all day on an album? No. Would I like to see him at church in service? Absolutely. Because the main prize is a recording contract, the obvious choice should be one that would sell albums. Not so sure that Elder will do that. I hope that the voting is fair. I could sense Duward fading and the songs were not helpful to him at all, but he still was phenonmenal. I enjoy all three of them, but I really wanted to see Duward go further. I wonder if they will bring the other SB alumni back, from past seasons. I see Crystal Aikin in the audience all the time. That would be great!

Elder and Leandra, put his name first out of respect. Love them both, they bring tears to my eyes each week. Hard choice, you have a 2011 verision of Pop Staples without the guitar and a 2011 version of Aretha, gotta annoint them both in terms of winning

  • valerie baker wrote on June 8, 2010

@ Jay, I'm well aware that Shirley Casear started at a young age and now as she's is in her 70's she's relevat as ever. Why the same respect and encouragement can be given to the Elder? We are all Christians I assume, right? As christians we should encourage the contestants and not hate on one because he was among the top two.

  • mesha wrote on June 8, 2010

I also agree with Keisha's comment. This year does'nt seem to have the excitement of last seasons performances. However, I do hope and pray that Elder Goldwire wins and I'll tell you why. First of all, We have already had 2 seasons where the winners were women. Not that I have anything against women being a woman myself, I just feel that we've heard it all before. All the yelling and the roaring screams. It's time for a change. Is this what Sunday Best is all about? The ability to yell and rare back? I love the way that Elder Goldwire relates his music. It's soft and honest and it's real. Reality should not be baseed on a "shout." If you watch the show over again, you will see that Leandrai was only reacting to what Yolanda told her to do. "Let the girl shout." We need a refreshing. We don't need a repeat of last seasons winners. We don't need a whole lot of yelling and hollering. We need someone who is real off the camera as well as in front of the camera . In addition, Elder Goldwire is genuine. You can see God all over him. He really encouraged my heart with the encouraging words he shared to Kirk. ELDER GOLDWIRE IS SUNDAY BEST AT ITS FINEST.!!!!

  • TruthBeSpoke wrote on June 8, 2010

Gayle, It has nothing do with age. That wasn't my point. Its superficial of you to read only that out of everything I said. You actually supported my point by naming all the other gospel greats off like Ceasar, Walker, etc. My point is....Why do we need another one? He isn't unique or special. He sounds like my pawpaw used to...and probably yours. He isn't new or refreshing at all. He's not even a differnt take on an old outfit. Non-unique and generic. His hard earned annointing honestly can be found in any backwoods church across the country. He serves simply as this season's gimmick.

  • v4c wrote on June 8, 2010

"He serves simply as this season’s gimmick." @ TruthBeSpoke - You should've added the Kanye shrug after that, LOL!

Hello all!! Troy, you pointed out somethin that I've been sayin for a while now: The judges aren't givin out real pointers...anywho, I think we all knew that LeAndria and Elder were gonna be the final two. This episode definately made up for last week's little debacle. Sorry to say it like this, but I was glad to see duward go, his performances were forgettable to me, there was lika a disconnect when he sang.I mean sure he had a GREAT voice-you can't deny that, but that's just it-he had a good voice. I loved leandia's performances- I love the lord moreso,I knew they was gonna let her shout, and the judges got they shout on too, leandria virtually never disappoints, even on her not so good days. Amen Mesha. Elder Goldwire although season as far as his age goes, is truly an inspiration to me, my family and my entire congregation. He has stepped out of the box and has shown us all that you don't have to SCREAM,YELL, and RARE BACK to be heard. True, there are times when you sing, you do get excited and you do add a little spice to the song by kicking it up with a yell. But, it should not happen every time you sing. I remember a couple of weeks ago when each contestant had to sing a song in a soft mello tone. Leandria could'nt even do that. She was the only one who had to yell her point across. I don't know about anybody else but I'm with Mesha. I don't want to relive seasons 1 & 2 over again. Give me the genuine anointing . Give me Elder Goldwire regardless of how old he is.

Leandria just shouted all over, she has the anointing all over.

I love the Lord and Elder and Leandra, I hope the judges will see fit to give the honors of Sunday's Best to both. It is impossible to pick a winner between the two.

This competition shouldn't be about gender or age but the best singer/performer. Duward got robbed, just as Tiffany got robbed last week. Sorry, but they picked the same kind of songs for Elder this entire competition and it's not fair to the other singer. If Elder would have had a crossover song the first round I would not feel as if he had an advange. I feel that Elder should have went home last week (again Tiffany was robbed) and Donnie crying at almost ever one of his performances...*sigh*. The judges shouldn't be voting there emotions but who sang the best, but I digress. I hope they bring back BeBe because the judging is suspect and without feedback.

Elder McClendon especially and all the contestants helps us forget the economy and problems of this world for a brief moment on Sunday nights. As major a problem as the oil spill, it is not my main focus on Sunday nights. Best of luck to both he and Leandra. I for one am sorry to see the season end.

I think the judges are being partial towards elder because of his age. He is not on the same level with the other contestants. And, speaking of forgetting words Elder cannot remember an entire song! How..in the ham sandwich ( as used previously) is he going to complete a cd. He will have to sing those gospels song with the same hook throughout. Skill wise elder can't touch leandria. Blessed is he to be that age and have his heath. We all aspire to be there, but people let's not forget that this is a competition!!! What is going on is comparable to a child competitor. We all know how this goes down..."awwwww, he is so cute" Stop playing wit me!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA........ THAT'S HOW I FEEL ABOUT THIS YEAR'S SUNDAY BEST! This year is a joke for real! How in the world can you get rid of singers like Dathan, Duward, and Martha? What is wrong with the judges this year? Now, speaking in all seriousness, I love Elder Goldwire. I think that he has waited a long time for God to exhalt him. Even though he is 79, I feel that God can use anybody at any age and that's just be for real. Take a look at Abraham and Sarah. Also Jacob. God does not discriminate with age, we do. Truth is, we do need a change in the gospel music industry. I too, among many, I am tired of the same old wayward singing. I guess if the Elder would have rared back and belted out a couple of roars and yells, maybe he would have stood a better chance in winning since all of the big commotion is about how well Leandria screams and hollers. Now, me too... I do sympathize with her trials and her tribulations, heck, who does'nt have any? I pray and believe that God is going to restore back everything that she lost. But this year's Sunday Best, is a joke. Sad thing is... the joke is on Elder Goldwire.. Sunday Best gimmick for 2010. Waht a lousy year this has been. Unfair,Unfair, Unfair is all I have to sum it up with.

Recap: Well tonight was off the CHAIN first and foremost. Just goin to get right into the contenstant performances...... Durward Davis- 1st Song: (Change the world) It was nice.... but couldnt help feelin a lil bored. I wouldnt have given him that song but he still did GREAT. 2nd Song: (I need you now) Now i absoulutely love Smokie Norful's music. NO ONE CAN TOUCH HIM... AND I MEAN THAT. But Durward has made me believe that he can take any song thrown at him and make them his OWN! He did a GREAT JOB on this one. LeAndria Johnson: 1st Song (Heaven Help Us All) Another song that was 1(not her best) and 2(had me bored)but when your LeAndria, u still makin it sound good. She kinda stumbled over the lyrics a lil bit, but maintained a nice tone throughout the song till the end. 2nd Song: (I love the lord.) Ok 1st off Whitney sang this song off! But dont got nothing on the way Leandria sang it! My God, the power, voice, presence, anoiting!.....
