I am really trying to wait patiently. So I am glad for a preview.

*shakes fists in the air* I'm at work and CANNOT view this NOW! *moping*

I think that Ledisi has an amazing voice. I just wish that she would record gospel music - she always does well with it.

I am going to need a box of tissues lol. This is gonna be a great tribute. Hopefully worthy of the man himself.

Ledisi blazed this track! I too would love to hear her do a full gospel record. I do love the fact that she's put some gospel songs on her records that she has out now. The song ("I'll Go) she did with Richard Smallwood on her "It's Christmas record was a winner, & the song "Thank You" that she did with production by Luther "Mano" Hanes was a winner as well!

I posted this clip first thing this morning!....Ledisi went in on this one! She know she need to just come on over and sing some Gospel! Stop dipping your toe in the water Girl! LOL....

I'm watching now... just hearing a few bars... she's needs to put this on digital (what used to be wax! LOL!) I don't want to get all super gospel holy political but I'll echo what was said upthread (so I won't get in (more) trouble): "I just wish that she would record gospel music - she always does well with it."

  • Tam Tam wrote on July 22, 2010

"I'll Go" was the song that introduced me to Ledisi. I like collecting (well-done) Christmas CDs. Hers is one of them.

  • J Matt wrote on July 22, 2010

Ledisi sung that thing well. Loved her spin on it. But Ledisi needs to stay in her turf, she doesn't need you gospel folk bashing and condemning her like you normally do mainstream/pop acts. Don't act like you're not guilty. EJ, thanks for posting. Now I'm an inch close to watching this on Sunday.

  • ejgaines wrote on July 22, 2010

FUNNYYYYYY!!! Btw, I agree with you-- I want her to stay doing what she does. Dip on into gospel when it's right, then scoot back to the grown folks' music.

  • Tam Tam wrote on July 22, 2010

Well, I tried to listen to her new CD and it was just WAY TOO melancholy for me. Other than "Higher Than This", every other song was about some man who left her, was about to leave her, looking for someone/something to ease her pain, getting herself back together, etc. Yikes! I'm like is she ever happy? And as far as bashing? I'lll call out anybody who's trying to okey-doke me with a facade of an image to maintain sales. Don't intentionally lie/deceive to cover up mess. Put THINE SELF away quietly (so no one else has to do it), repent, fast, pray before the Lord and allow Him to restore you properly. And that's so regardless of whatever kind of within gospel genre that exists: hip hop gospel, country gospel, contemporary gospel, kiddie gospel, jazz gospel, traditional gospel, ska gospel, rock gospel, etc.

Her "first" CD (on a major label) was WAY better than the latest one that's out now.

  • Tam Tam wrote on July 22, 2010

That's good to know! I will give it a listen. Thank you! :-)

  • Mia_v4c wrote on July 22, 2010

Totally agree! Go pick up Lost and Found...still gets HEAVY HEAVY rotation by me.

  • Devon wrote on July 22, 2010

But above "Lost and Found" & "Turn me Loose", check out her two independent records "SoulSinger" and "Feeling Orange But Sometimes Blue" Greatness.

  • Gr8tful wrote on July 22, 2010

Yep SOULSINGER is my FAVORITE!!!! She has an intrelude that is just rediculous. It's like #6 or #7. Gosh....Ledisi made me want to throw a shoe at her (having a Dr. Mattie Moss-Clark moment lol). I can't WAIT for Sunday. I bet Lynette was proud to hear her sing it. THANK YOU EJ and (whomever recorded this) for allowing us to experience a true needed celebration for Pastor Walter Hawkins. Rest in Peace Walter....job well done thy good and faithful servant. ;o )

  • Mia_v4c wrote on July 22, 2010

Can I admit that the first time I heard the song "Soulsinger" on Myspace, I spent a good 20 - 30 minutes trying to sing the scat at the end. LMBO! Like...seriously...

  • candiva wrote on July 22, 2010

    I definitely agree!

  • @T_monster wrote on July 22, 2010

@EJ--I like how you were all nonchalant with it..."someone from the balcony", like you don't know who it was! *side eye* Either way I'm glad we get to hear Ledisi jam this tune. Not er'body can sang this right. She did that thing proud. I think I would be okay with a few hidden gospel tracks on her next CD.

  • MrsRkb wrote on July 23, 2010

Truly enjoyed this one and Ledisi has power vocals. I was wondering how long she was going to be able to stand still lol Totally impossible when you began to think on God's goodness and yes I am grateful!!!!! (steps away from the laptop to give God praise)

  • anon wrote on July 23, 2010

Loved It! And I believe she should stay secular as long as she is telling a story worth hearing. I can't endorse every one of her songs, but she definitely has a few worthwhile subject matters. Her voice is amazing-she should continue to do gospel spots from time to time. But if she goes completely gospel, I don't believe the gospel community would support her with sales (although I personally would).

  • Yvonne wrote on July 23, 2010

Love me some Walter Hawkins, secondly, absolutely love me some Ledisi. You don't understand! she is like my new favorite femail artist. Of the chain. They could not have given her a better song to sing to tribute Walter Hawkins with. She did a wonderful Job. I'll be sharing this video and listening to it like ALL THE TIME!!!!!

  • Gayle Lecus wrote on July 24, 2010

I loved it too....Let's pray for her and not down her. She would do well in the gospel industry, but it is not the right time yet.

  • Joe wrote on July 25, 2010

I definitely agree that she did a wonderful job with the song, and that we should continue to pray for her and not put her down. But, I do want to say that God's time is not our time. Sometimes it might not look like something is happening at the "right" time to us, but God will still do it anyway, because God, in His omniscience, knows precisely how to orchestrate our destiny ("order our steps"), and indeed He already has plotted it all out for each of us... Ledisi may or may not ever sing gospel music, but if/when God tells her to, she got ta' move! :)

  • tavoris wrote on July 26, 2010

Anybody who has seen her in concert knows that she isn't doing spiritual music to maintain sales. She does it because it's what she loves to do. Half of her music straddles the line of spiritual/secular depending on the audience's interpretation. God uses her in THIS way to communicate HIS love to her fans, and none of us have the authority to question that. I wonder what people would have said if Sylvester were alive to perform at this concert. SMH

"i'll go" and "thank you" are two of my faves of hers! she kills them!

WOW! Ledisi, your place is in gospel! I was blown away by her rendition of Walter Hawkins - Be Grateful. Goose bumps were on my arms after hearing Ledisi sing this beautiful song. I can't wait to see the rest of this event...
