Is It Just Me: I'ma Need A MAJOR Hawkins Tribute At Stellars

Is it just me, or don’t we need a major tribute to Walter Hawkins at the Stellar Awards in January 2011?

I’m talkin’ MAAAAJOR… like, get the folks together and start preppin’ and rehearsin’ TOMORRUH.

*shrugs*

My ideal tribute would include Richard Smallwood, Donald Lawrence, Donnie McClurkin, Kevin Bond, The Hawkins Singers… and a few others.

Anyone?  Who would your ideal tribute feature???

I agree... I would like to see pretty much the same singers you mentioned, and I honestly think Kirk Franklin could pull a song out. I just hope whoever is charge of putting it together...does it right!

I would like to see Kurt Carr and his singers do their version of Be Grateful featuring Lynette Hawkins-Stephens. Also include the Clark Sisters doing the COGIC version of He'll Bring you out". You can't leave out my Clark Sisters now EJ.

Daryl Coley, Yvette Flunder (Oops, don't think the church ready for Yvette lol!)

I almost want to say "That's alright. Don't worry about it" to the Stellars.... And y'all know why! (side-eye!) LOL! But... since we walk by faith and not by sight, in addition to those who have been named, I'd like to see Israel Houghton (of course!) do something with "Dear Jesus I Love You" and/or "Just A Prayer Away". The newest group I'm excited about (Ashmont Hill) do something with "I'm Not the Same" or "What Is This?". And for the choir selections, esp. "Marvelous" and "The Potter's House", the City of Refuge Choir and/or, if they really want to be innovative, include the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

  • Christina wrote on July 13, 2010

I would love to see that as well but without D. Lawrence. I would like to see Richard Smallwood, the Clark sisters, Donnie, Andre Crouch, and of course the Hawkins singers. If they could do a tribute then I wouldn't need to hear anymore music during that show.

  • Victor wrote on July 13, 2010

I think it would be pretty dope to see Ted & Sheri do The Potter's House.

I would love to see a major tribute to the Hawkins especially Bishop Walter Hawkins. Definitely have to have Andrae Crouch, Donnie McClurkin, Kurt Carr & The KC singers, Richard Smallwood (who by the way, is a living legend himself in my opinion). Marvin Winans, Vashawn Mitchell, of course the Hawkins Singers, and other gospel greats. Oh yeah and how about Jamie Hawkins and Sunny Hawkins too....

  • Tam Tam wrote on July 13, 2010

Nice suggestion for the lead duet part! :-)

  • Gr8tful wrote on July 13, 2010

I would love to see (what's her name) that sung "I must go on"? I luv her voice and she sung a whole lot with the Hawkins family.

  • Darryl wrote on July 13, 2010

Oh...It is just me or should there be a Love Alive VI anyway! In addition to the Stellar's Tribute. Bring back the whole choir and do a reunion in honor of Walter!

  • Ken wrote on July 13, 2010

Okay I just feel we should move past the Stellar's and get everyone that is significant in gospel (mostly everyone already named) and put together a Gaither Homecoming "like" special. I want one where everyone just gets a chance to sang his songs. Like I don't want just a 10 minute mini snippet of his contribution of gospel music. Let's just run the whole gambit. Get a little bit of everything from every album and let's celebrate the man the a good 2 hours. I'm just saying...

  • Jared wrote on July 13, 2010

My thoughts: get the Richard Smallwood Singers together again to do a song. Walter was a HUGE inspiration to Richard, and the Hawkins clan and Smallwood clan worked together a lot. Other than the Smallwoods, I'd say get the Andrae and Sandra Crouch, Donnie McClurkin, Kurt Carr, Gladys Knight, Oleta Adams, etc...

  • Ann wrote on July 13, 2010

i would definitely add the Hawkins family, Andrae and Sandra Crouch.

  • xiquia wrote on July 14, 2010

A lady who can really sing that we don't hear from is Hezekia Walker's ex-wife. That lady can been her back to a song and bring that testimony on a song like no other. What's happening with her. She could pull off something with one of these choirs too. Anyway know who or what I'm talking about.

  • Ked P. wrote on July 14, 2010

I would love to see the folks you've mentioned...with the Love Center choir singing in the backround. Better yet, how 'bout a doggone super-combined choir with Vision, Love Center, Mississippi Mass, and the Whitfield Company! I dunno EJ, perhaps this one is TOO big for the Stellars...

  • Ked P. wrote on July 14, 2010

Oh yeah...AND the Andrae Crouch Singers...

  • Gamage wrote on July 14, 2010

I Must Go On was led by Walter's cousin, Shirley Miller. Definitely all the Hawkins family, and one of the women Walter himself said is one of his favorites, CeCe Winans

  • Jas wrote on July 13, 2010

I definitely agree with the notion that this one is bigger than a segment on the Stellars. I would love to see a special show just dedicated to his legacy and influence on the gospel music industry! I would think all the gospel artist named, as well as some secular artist, would want to pay tribute to this gospel legend. And YES, I AGREE THAT THE TED & SHERI SINGING "POTTERS HOUSE" WOULD BE SENSATIONAL! Kurt Carr singers and Richard Smallwood are a must...with the Hawkins singers a given!

  • Kevin W wrote on July 14, 2010

@xiquia - Monique Walker. She did Try Christ on the Hez & LFCC album Live in London. In fact Monique and Shirley Miller can duet on Try Christ.

  • Kevin W wrote on July 14, 2010

And YES!! It should be bigger than the Stellars. In fact Love Alive VI should be the venue where it all comes together in his honor. "His Legacy, Our Blessing"

  • Kevin W wrote on July 14, 2010

@Jas, yes I'm sure they would...but I personally am good with seeing their faces in the audience. I wouldn't have to see them on stage. Definitely artists that were from his era....in addition to those mentioned u have LaShun, John P. Kee, Vanessa, Shirley, Joe Ligon (Mighty Clouds of Joy), The Winans, Rance Allen, to name a few. Oh this will have to be a 2nighter memorial recording

  • M. Cribbs wrote on July 14, 2010

...and it would end with Lady Tramaine singin' "CHANGED"

  • Wayne Barr II wrote on July 14, 2010

I'm in agreement, put his brother on Daniel on the Organ, Edwin on the Piano, or Kevin Bond, with Singers being Lynette, Tramaine, Shirley, Feddie, & Carol. That family had a blend out of this world.

  • Kwartema wrote on July 14, 2010

I think I'm with you on this Ked P - a super combined mass choir of choirs (not groups or soloists - huge difference) would be awesome.... From folks comments seems there isnt much confidence in the Stellars.....lol

  • Kwartema wrote on July 14, 2010

M Cribbs - you want us all to pass out...it would be too awesome to stand...

  • danny wrote on July 14, 2010

I think the essence of the tribute should be to allow people who were either close to him or people who have been incredibly inspired/influenced by his music artistically celebrate His life/Music Edwin Hawkins, Tramaine Hawkins and the Edwin Hawkins singers Kevin Bond- Renowned producer/songwriter and Walter's keyboardist for a long time Donnie McClurkin was greatly influenced by Him Richard Smallwood and Donald Lawrence whose arrangements/vocal structures have been influence by Him Others will include Andrae and Sandra Crouch/Daryl Coley/the clark sisters/etc

  • Raven wrote on July 14, 2010

    Great suggestion!

  • Raven wrote on July 14, 2010

2 thumbs up for that idea!

  • Raven wrote on July 14, 2010

Actually I've been thinking. Maybe they should do a big tribute to the gospel families. Like the Moss-Clark family ( the late Dr. Clark and Bill Moss), The Winans (the late Pop Winans and Ron Winans), and the Hawkins (the late Bishop Walter Hawkins). Mostly all of these deaths were recent and all of these people have been a major influence in the gospel industry. Just a thought.

  • yvonne wrote on July 14, 2010

Homecoming musical for Bishop Walter Hawkins hopefully has a great lineup that everybody in the room participate the glorious and wonderful harmony of a heart felt songs that they would have known & loved for many years. A friend, mentor, family member that grace the world. He had a contemporary setting & solid rock message for coming of the Lord & Saviour. Walter Hawkins touches many lives social &music backgrounds of all walks of a life. His testimony have been shown of a lifetime of a legacy that he walked & talked with God. I believe the kingdom of heaven gladly open door to sings more praise toward the love he had for our Lord and King.

  • Tam Tam wrote on July 14, 2010

Cool! My version has the special TWO-HOUR show ending with "Thank You" with ONLY REAL ANOINTED folk singing the leads, vamps, bridges, calls and responses, etc. Also missing Rev. James Moore who did those powerful ad-libs on the original cut....

  • ebonisun wrote on July 14, 2010

Like MJ huh...I can dig that!

  • Gayle wrote on July 14, 2010

Vanessa Bell should be part of that tribute also. And Bobby Jones should host.

  • Gayle wrote on July 14, 2010

I was hearing a Hawkins song just then called, "I love The Lord-Crystal Lewis and Daryl Coley should do the leads..

EJ, Yes! And all of the artists mentioned would take the cake! I would also like to see the next generation of Hawkins in the mix- Edwin's son and daughter-in-law Jamie and Sunny Hawkins. Her (Sunny Hawkins) last album was AMAZING! With them included, I know the tribute would be even more heartfelt.
