I like to consider myself hip, happenin’, cool and down wit’ it.
I can spit all the lyrics to my favorite rap song (not here, cuz it’s not Christian and you guys would come for me), and I know what I personally like when it comes to hip-hop, Christian or otherwise.
That said, I don’t actually KNOW what sells in gospel hip-hop– I believe it’s lyrics, beat and hook, like most songs. *shrugs*
In any case, I heard “5High,” the single from PAJAM’s gospel hip-hop artist Chris Clark, and I found myself saying “wax on… wax off… wax on, wax on, wax off…” for the next several hours. Figured that’s reason enough to post it!
Peep the video below and let me know what you guys think of it. And for my true hip-hop heads, I want you, ESPECIALLY, to weigh-in.
Wax on… wax off…
You’ll be saying it while you walk around today. Guaranteed.
What do you think???

i liked the song, coming from a teenager though!
Yo is this gospel? What is he talkin' about? Washin' windows? Where'd you find this guy? Send him back.
This is a disaster. DO.NOT.WANT.
This song is stupid! - and it is not Gospel.
***sets up deluxe lounge chair and table with a nice, cool drink of water and sits to watch to see how this thread unfolds*** So I'm flashing back to the "Survey Said: Majority of Readers Don’t Buy Gospel Hip-Hop by EJ on Jul.23, 2010, under Industry" thread where lots of finger pointing and accusations occurred about being judgemental and being unaware of what is and is not hot on the streets. And now this video, which I'm not going to even click based on the comments already posted. All I want to know is is this: has the bottom of the barrel FINALLY been reached in gospel hip hop? Have y'all finally decided what's out of bounds for gospel hip hop? Is the beat too "worldly"? The lyrics are not only biblically unfounded but wack, lame, AND tired? What about the music production? Unbalanced dubs? I mean what? ***takes a sip of my tall, cool glass of ice water***
is this a joke? this HAS to be an SNL skit right? LOL He's talking about his fingers the entire song... NEXT.
Now, I am a Gospel hip-hop fan, but I heard NOTHING about Jesus or God at all in this song. So...this isn't Gospel hip-hop at all. Maybe the dude is Christian, but this is NOT Gospel/Christian hip-hop. PAJAM fail.
Exactly. This is why people aren't buying Gospel Rap. It's corny.
Hey EJ I ike some gospel hip hop, but something is missing with this song. I think the hook of the song is cool but as it was previously stated I think more lyrics of why we are getting our 5high is needed. I still love the PAJAM crew though!
I'm a "hip hop head" as it was stated (well at least when it comes on to Christian rap) but I wasn't feeling this at all. I've heard Chris Clark rap before and I honestly don't believe that this is his best work. Sometimes these kind of songs come out and people think this is all Christian rap is but there are definitely songs better than this. i just hope Chris Clark's music gets better from this point on.
I have to 2 feelings about the song. First, I don't like the lyrics. I like the musical track but felt the lyrics need meat. Second, I think the goal of the song was to give the christian teenagers some "feel good" music and a dance to do to it. I think the marketing idea is to catch the attention of the young teens that are learning new dances from the likes of Soulja boy and give the christian teens a clean dance move and song. Not sure if its the right method but no harm in trying.
Cracking up loooooooooooooooool
EJ this has got to be a joke right?
No doubt that this is corny, I agree but to classify all of gospel rap as corny is inaccurate.
Also, people are buying gospel rap. Trip Lee's album debuted #1and is currently at #5. Some people still have this mindset that all Christian rap is garbage without even looking into it and I used to be like that but then I came across Lecrae and the other rappers with Reachrecords and I was blown away.
Let me adjust my statement. 95% of gospel rap is corny. And I listen to it regularly.
I agree with this. This video is an attempt to establish an audience with the teenage base. You all don't get it because it's not for you. The one teenager that spoke likes it and that's what it's about. This convo is almost like giving an album of Benedictine Monks singing to teenagers. Their just not going to get it, their not gonna feel it.
It's true what they say: youth is wasted on the young. One (regardless of age) can "get it" and still not "like" it and rightfully call it CRAP. Deja vu. Sigh....
I'm a teenager. I find this to be very CORNY.
well everything isn't for everybody but i'm a Chris Clark supporter and for those who wanna hear something else from him that has great lyrics check out this link of his song "waterboy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtsLaLGx5Y4 it says, "what God you know that walks on water and part seas, nail pierced hands..." check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtsLaLGx5Y4
well i don't know if anybody peeped out his views but 8,000 views since wed is no joke, somebody is feeling it! So... the few that don't like it obviously don't matter lol i'm just saying
EXACTLY NEKAI--- WHATS CORNY ABOUT THAT!!
I love the song! "Tell the streets the reason we like to throw it HIGH. We like to lift HIS name, give ALL to the MOST HIGH. HE's the STAR of the show like Peter in the Family Guy. Looking for a Father then guess what people you can join the family now and HE won't leave you!" Whew!!! Yes Chris Clark! For that alone, we have reason to lift our "FIVE HIGH." And BTW... thank God since HE "took my WAX OFF," I've been shining like a brand new penny! lolol!

Thank God that the Good News can be carried in so many creative ways. I support this young man. This is my 1st time hearing him but I like him already. Also, I think it is such a disaster that Christians push our artists away to the world... they get there... blow up (like Kirk Franklin) and then we want to claim them... do your thing C.C.!
Don't really get what the song is about, but to each his own. May not be my cup of tea, but it obviously is someone's.
Wax On...Wax Off is all that I can remember from this song. "Sounds" good, but that's not what this is really about, is it? God is "out the box", yes, so His message can be delivered in many forms; however, gospel music in whatever form should leave at least a remnant of the Good News lingering, and 8,000 hits (no offense) is not an indication of a gospel song's effectiveness. This is about God's Word and His stuff - Are we tryin' to make the world feel comfortable by showing them that we can still "get our groove on" in the name of Jesus. (What is that?) The music, in all of it's complexities, should *never* overshadow the message. Give me some solid food...or at least something to think about. Christianity is a powerful word. If we're going to stand in the gap, we need to represent.
Okay, so not a HUGE Christian Rap fan, but I will say the majority of the folks slaying (selling records) that side of the market/genre are reformed Hip Hop artist which means they subscribe to a WHOLE DIFFERENT theology than what I would imagine PAJAM and their "kind" do. For example. Check out Flame, Lecrae (Who is the most popular as of now), Trip Lee and PRO (Even DaTruth before he "fell off") all of these guys are under the tutelage of John Piper who is a leader in the Reformed movement. Basically it's all about the CROSS AND NOT ABOUT THE FLOSS. So if you want to make it in Christian Rap, just from what I can tell you have to be extremely unpopular to the Hip Hop culture at large. Meaning you have to present a Hip Hop styled-message so different that fans of yours will not be able to be fans of Kanye and Jay Z too, as the content base will be so VASTLY different! Don't believe me, check Lecrae out over on youtube and then see how all these guys have been Seminary trained, they also see the Hip Hop culture as a missionary field. Not as a "wax on wax off" show flow. This song might work for you guys' holiness and COGIC "youth explosions" but for the Genre at large this guy would be an Epic fail.... Basically most Christian Rap fans I know would say PAJAM and this kid should stick to the "gospel" music that they make and leave Hip Hop to those who can best reach that culture...
