ChitChat: My Church Sang That Song Too Much

You know how the minister of music at church introduces a new song one Sunday, and the whole congregation responds so well that he/she does it again NEXT Sunday, then the Sunday after that and the Sunday after that, until it gets a little stale to everyone but the minister of music (and maybe the pastor)?

No matter how incredible the song is, sometimes churches have the tendency to wear a good thing out. Some examples might be “Total Praise,” “Souled Out, and “One God.”

Undoubtedly, they’re hits on the radio, and they will forever be everyone’s “jaaammmm,” but I’d be lying if every now and then, I didn’t think “we’re singing that AGAIN?!”

Maybe it’s just me, but I doubt it.

Which song is THAT SONG in your church?

HE'S ABLE - Deitrick Haddon/Darwin Hobbs NOBODY GREATER - VaShawn Mitchell... it's so special, you need to ration it out. Not every time! THEY THAT WAIT - F.O.C.U.S. ... thing is, the people begged for it until THEY got sick of it. AWESOME GOD - Youthful Praise

"Faithful" by Bishop Hezekiah Walker. Less is definitely more in this case.

Every Fred Hammond song known to man, our minister of music was obsessed with Fred until he encountered Israel Houghton and had us singing every song he ever made

Don't get me wrong. Israel is probably my favorite artist right now. But "Lord, You Are Good" needs to be laid to rest at my church, at least for a little while. Give us some time to miss it...LOL

  • Tam Tam wrote on September 2, 2010

LOL @ this blog entry! Thankfully my church switches things up well. And the repeats we do I don't mind because I REALLY like the songs: "How Great Is Our God" and any Israel/New Breed song, esp. "You Are Good" and "Alpha and Omega".

  • Krys wrote on September 2, 2010

Definitely "How Great is Our God" should be rationed out a bit and our praise team NEVER sings the verses either!!!! LOL And "He's Able" Darwin Hobbs, the praise team just goes right into "Oooooo, ooooh, oooh, oooh...HE's able!" I'm like, "Where is the verse???" LOL smh

  • Guest wrote on September 2, 2010

I have to say... our church wore out "Blessed" by Fred Hammond when it was popular, and long after that. Had folk walking in church saying I want God to bless me, but not with that song again!!! LOL!!!!

  • Christina wrote on September 2, 2010

LOL@Guest My mothers church sings How Great Is Our God all the time. Their praise team practices like 3 times a week and they never sing new p&w songs. They do learn new ones but they never sing them. They sing the same 6 songs all the time. I go to church on occasion but every time I go they sing those same songs. My sister goes all the time and she and my mom said they've probably only song one new song since they've been members (they joined about 3 years ago). Worthy is the Lamb by Hillsong, You are Good by Israel and New Breed, I Just Can't Stop Praising Him, and Annointing Fall On Me by Ron Kenoly, they can lock all these songs in a vault for the next 50 years.

I am one of the Worship Leaders at my church and the songs we sing all the time are: Still Standing by Israel and New Breed He's Able by Deitrick Haddon and Voices of Unity* Mighty to Save by Hillsong *I personally put a moratorum on this song because my mom (the former Worship Leader) sang it all the time and I had to sing it at her funeral. These songs are anointed and do minister to people. But God's anointing is in every song because the power comes from Him and not from the song itself. Can I get an "Amen"?

  • LAESanger wrote on September 2, 2010

    agreed

THANK YOU EJ FOR THIS! I am so tired of the same ol songs, the song that my church wear out is souled out.. We sing that like every sunday and it is getting annoying, I mean at first it was great but I want to hear some new and refreshing songs. It is either that or total praise.

  • deon wrote on September 2, 2010

MY church sings all thte songs stated above and I do agree they should be layed to rest. What ever happend to the old songs the church used to sing? You cant even stand up and sing a song with the praise team interupting you lol to sing a current song.

  • Katydid wrote on September 2, 2010

This site gets more and more hilarious! ...oh well, you can not LOVE the gospel and HATE the truth. Now let the church say "Amen! Sing a new song unto the Lord!"

  • Katydid wrote on September 2, 2010

Extremely funny!!!! I am so guilty, but I can take constructive criticism.

  • busy04 wrote on September 2, 2010

How Great Is Our God, Alpha & Omega...sigh. I am so wishing for the constant tributes of said songs to end.

  • Katydid wrote on September 2, 2010

Hahahaha! The church went for more than 3 yrs. playing "Jesus Is Real" during offering sessions, but it was definitely the sweetest jam for me in the youth choir when it first came out.

Love love love this post EJ - my old church literally rinsed out ' King of Kings majesty God of heaven living in me' It got to a point that I was convinced the P&W leaders only sang that song to ensure the senior pastor and his wife lifted their hands in worship cos that was one of their favourites........................

  • marshawn wrote on September 3, 2010

I kid you not, EVERY sunday my sister's church sings Kirk Franklin's "Something About The Name Jesus". And dude does not miss one Rance Allen adlib. LOL.

  • SB10 wrote on September 3, 2010

Encourage Yourself, Donald Lawrence~~For long time we sang this song in church every few weeks and then when we'd go to different churches and sing it, at this point if I hear the phrase 'encourage yourself' i skip over the song, no matter what song...

  • Mia_v4c wrote on September 3, 2010

    Stop it. LMBO!

  • Mia_v4c wrote on September 3, 2010

At my old church, I taught the Praise Team "Emmanuel" so we could use it as the opening song for the month of December a few years back. The first time we sang it, the Pastor was SOOOO excited about it...that he asked us to sing it again later in the service. Okay...fine. But it got to the point that we were singing this song AT LEAST once a service....BEYOND DECEMBER! People would be laid out in the floor and Pastor would request "Emmanuel", LMBO! Are you kidding me?! That's not a song for floor ministry!!! LMBO! Crazy! And my Pastor is quick to sing How Great is Our God too. No verses. With modulations. LMBO!

  • ChadLott wrote on September 3, 2010

We can't leave out Lamar Campbell's "More than Anything"....for that manner, most people forget that is Lamar Campbell's song.

  • @matthew5and9 wrote on September 3, 2010

Floor ministry and Emmanuel....you're joking right. I also have an issue with How Great Is Our God without the verses. Our church sings I Love You Jesus a little too much. Don't Do It Without Me was given its gold watch about a month ago. Although I love Sold Out and Search Me Lord by Ricky Dillard...enough is enough. Since, I am 2 or 3 cds behind on Israel cds, I am still on his Africa cd with I Am Not Forgotten. Our church is just now learning it. Pray for us.

  • CLEnATL wrote on September 3, 2010

I agree with the songs listed here. I think one issue is that a lot of the songs that are sung frequently have no verses (or the verses are left out) and I get annoyed hearing a five word song last for 20 minutes every week. Maybe worship leaders could remix some hymns from time to time - they have a lot of good theology - and they have more than five words! LOL!

  • Jarrett wrote on September 3, 2010

    Agreed!

  • Honestly wrote on September 3, 2010

I don't have to hear "How Great Is Our God" again....lol Around the turn of the year, my church sang that almost every Sunday. I actually wish they would do "More Than Anything" and "Chasing After You" more, even though I know other churches that wear those out too. lol

  • Virginia Hall wrote on September 3, 2010

Every Sunday without fail we sing Hez Walker's I Need You...You Need Me...etc. This is since the release of the CD.

  • busy04 wrote on September 3, 2010

    Right!

  • Tam Tam wrote on September 3, 2010

I say bring back the HYMNS! Some of these pre (not new) schoolers and unchurched/pre-saved folk don't know the beauty and the richness of those hymns! And no remixes of the hymns... the REAL ONES! Notice I said "SOME" and not all....

  • @kendoanything wrote on September 3, 2010

I get angry at Never Would Have Made It too! I feel some sort of way when this song comes on b/c I'm like haven't we heard this enough? I know he has new songs.

  • Novella wrote on September 3, 2010

Mix it up, hymns, spirituals and praise songs, but it takes work and practice. Of course, nobody has time so it's just easier to modulate a chorus than it is to learn and teach versus.

  • Juan wrote on September 4, 2010

My Name is Victory - Jonathan Nelson I Am Healed - Donald Lawrence I Believe - John P. Kee Grateful - Hezekiah Walker Not that I dont love these songs but I be like huh...again...these are our go to songs on Sunday nights omg...I be like MANNNNNN!!!

  • christianprincess wrote on September 6, 2010

At my old church, "He reigns forever" and "The Best is yet to come". For the "Best is yet to come" it was because my pastor fellin love with that song for 2 years straight and would sing it before alter call. My current church has "How great is our God" on a respirator.

  • Jay wrote on September 7, 2010

  • Tami wrote on September 8, 2010

Ok...I'm guilty of repeating...you guys are hilarious!!! Not to make excuses (LOL) some songs you can't sing unless you have the full team present (which in our church varies like crazy...pray for us!) so you have to go with the songs with less harmonies cause you'll sound ridiculous...LOL But this is enlightening and HILARIOUS! I love you guys!! :)

  • Mia_v4c wrote on September 8, 2010

Good point about the ending. And we do the version with rhythm...partial blame goes to Jonathan Nelson's version on his last CD. It was hot...but its inclusion as the last song in a medley helped to make it as hot as it is. MESSAGE! LOL...

  • Honestly wrote on September 9, 2010

Right after I posted my comment last week, my church sings "How Great Is Our God" on Sunday.........I couldn't help but tell my buddy sitting next to me about this article when I heard the intro. lol

The presence of the Lord is Here, Total Praise and Souled Out--- I loved these songs at one time. Not anymore, but God is still good.

  • Mia_v4c wrote on September 9, 2010

We sang it this past Sunday...AND at Wednesday night service too! LOL! And since I'm on the Praise Team, all I could do was smile and keep singing. :-)

  • Simone wrote on September 9, 2010

  • Simmah wrote on September 9, 2010

The song that my pastor loves to hear and has requested numerous amount of times is "Moving Forward." We sing it almost every Sunday! Whenever he requests for our praise team to sing it, everyone face drops! *Sigh*
