To chat about Fresh, the new album from Tye Tribbett (in stores today), I wrote a guest review for the official website of gmc (formerly Gospel Music Channel).
You can check it out by clicking right HERE.
If you’ve read it, I’ll add the following:
Must-hear cuts on the album: aside from the title track, you’ve gotta listen to “Only Help,” “Take Over,” “Keep Me,” “Your Blood,” “Champion” and my absolute favorite song on the project, “Holding On.”
Do you have it already? What are you loving on there so far?
Are you getting it? When?
Are you NOT getting it? Why not?
Talk to me!

I don't think i'l be picking this album up. As with a majority of gospel artist, Tye has started to make a sound that is too similar to the current r&b and hip-hop communities. First Marvin Sapp uses auto-tune in a very pop music way on his latest album (Praise You Forever) and we had the guys of 21:03 do a remix of a DJ Khaled song and think that they were using the worlds stuff for the glory of God. It might just be me, but I think that God wants a sound all to himself. The music should sound different when it's about God. Not just the lyrics, but the actual music should be heaven sent. I just think it's too much of a stretch to have an album that could easily be confused with R&B records as of late. Tye Tribbett is not the reason he is successful. GA did a lot for me and it just so happened that Tye was on stage with them. I'd love to hear a GA project, but the Tye album, just might be a pass for me.
It's okay for me. Just okay. It's understandable & accepted that it's no longer Tye Tribbett & GA, but JUST Tye Tribbett. So I wasn't looking for "that" sound, but I did hope it would be better than what it is. It's his personal, NEW sound. I love the honesty that he's showing throughout the record. I do have a few songs on repeat & I do hope that his music touches lives & brings souls to Christ, which I'm sure is apart of his goal.
See EJ, im at work...u make me sick.!!..LOL...i want to hear this now, but i have to wait 'til I get home. Appreciate you sharing, Sir! And for all the deep saints, I'm on break!! LOL
Considering EJ and busy04's comments...and after listening to the snippets, I'm thinking I'll download the tracks EJ recommended. I am NOT a fan of pure rock. Soulful rock? A few rockish licks in a soulful song? Yeah. Beyond that, it's a no go, lol. I'm confident that I'll enjoy the suggested tracks. So...um...thanks for the heads up, LOL! Saved me $4...
I know the first single, "Fresh," didn't get much love on this site, and was pretty much dismissed as nothing new. But, I think the song wasn't as much about being fresh musically as it was about needing to be me made fresh spiritually. The project continues in that vein of fresh spirituality, and I think it actually accomplishes fresh (i.e., new ground) musically along the way. [I think Tye Tribbett is one of the most creative artists/musicians/arrangers/producers out there, including secular ones.] By the way, I think "Fresh" actually did bring something new to the table musically. If nothing else, the last minute or so of the song, which delves into electronica, is something pretty much never heard before in gospel music, and certainly not from mainstream (or at least major label) gospel artists.
My earlier comment probably gave it away, but I'm loving the new project! I like cohesive eclecticism on an album; I definitely love it when a Gospel artist is able to bring the Gospel in a variety of anointed, unique and engaging ways, across a variety of genres. I think Tye does just that, and I think he does it well. I absolutely agree with EJ's list of recommended tracks. But, I also really liked some of the more rock-infused/pure rock tracks, like "Good," "Eulogy" and "Replace Me." Overall, I think it's a very strong project. I have to also say that I was pleasantly surprised by the guest spots: - Mali Music on "Eulogy" - Lowell Pye on "Take Over" - Isaac Carree on "Your Blood" - Israel Houghton on "Champion" Before I bought it, I hadn't seen anything crediting them or saying that they'd be on the project. Oh yeah, and I had never heard of Pastor Tim (on "Keep Me"), but DUDE! Wanna to hear more from him!
Not fresh I'm all for trying new things but he should stick with tye being tye and what got him here like albums 1 & 2. The whole reinvention isn't working for me as a fan or a musician. he's not established enough to change now and could loose his base see
Well, after listening to the album on aol, i must confess Im disappointed with this record. I have always held tye in high regard is an innovator and trailblazer in gospel. I appreciate Tye's newfound transparency and honesty, but I miss the energy and fun of GA. I feel like so much of gospel right now is just so.. heavy. I miss that spirt of joyfulness I use to hear in gospel growing up. Frankly, I couldn't get pass the autotune on the album, and the upbeat tracks that were on the album just felt a little dated. There are a couple tracks though that definitly caught my interest (sadly most of these tracks had special guest features on them) that I'll probably end up downloading. I still consider myself a fan and hope Tye finds success as a solo artist, but I dont think Im going to be using my hard earned dollar to purchase this particular album.
Wow, i love this project....it's funny, i was never a Tye fan, but he has a new one now!!!...i liked a few of the songs with G.A. ., but I am glad that this one is much more creative. Tye, this one is going in the iPOD!!
Love the project Eulogy is a masterpiece! Keep the freshness coming Tye!
I think its Tye did a great job of speaking from his heart on this record you definately know he has been through something. I think this record will appeal to those who are in the midst of a crisis or just got through a crisis. I think it shows transparent worship from tye...very authentic. I don't think he was trying to please anyone on the album I think this album was his therapy and I don't know type personally I think he hopes this album becomes therapy to people who might be going through similar issues. This album gave me the same authentic transparent worship as j-moss just james.
I totally agree with you Juan. This CD makes you really, really appreciate God's grace and its sufficiency!!!!
Got FRESH yesterday!! I'm loving it! So far my favorites are: - Eulogy - Holdin' On - Keep Me - You Alone - Most High God - Where The Rock Hits The Ground (my God, my God!!!!!!)
Note: The last song on my list is actually titled WHEN The Rock Hits The Ground.
I truly enjoy music as well as stage entertainment from Tye Tribbett. I have not had the opportunity to hear the new project completely, I have been blessed to hear and be blessed by the new single "Keep Me". It's what I would call a BLESSER...If there was ever such a word. There's a story behind this praise and I received it well. Pastor Tim Rogers is awesome as well, I always his music... Looking forward to reviewing the entire project.
Mostly a mixed bag for me. Although there are some good tracks on here, it's not nearly as consistent as his last 3 offerings. I still think Tye has the ability to stand alone, but on this record there were just too many tracks that just didn't do it for me. And the auto-tune/vocoder was overused. More than half the songs had it. People have been saying it's a "fresh" new sound in gospel. Tonex, J Moss, Marvin Winans JR, Canton Jones, and a number of other gospel artists have been doing this type of thing for years now. I don't really care how many different genres and styles are on a record, if it's not quality music that instantly resonates with you it's not all that "fresh".
Heard part of it yesterday....wasn't really impressed. I think it the transition from GA was too early and too fast. I got whiplash. He's doing what everyone else is doing now, like the artists mentioned above (J. Moss, Canton Jones) and even some of the ones on his cd (Mali Music, and Israel). Nothing was "Fresh" about it to me. And note to gospel artists: PLEASE LEAVE AUTO-TUNE ALONE. PERMANENTLY. Thanks. If I was going to consider buying it, the overbearing auto-tune definitely killed it for me. So, that's a "no" from me. Sorry.
Well, the Joe Pace cd that came out thesame day is definitely better then Tye's reinvention of the already invented......Sorry.
I agree with everyone and also this post; Joe Pace has done it again!, he heard what our spirit needs. Music that would minister to our spirits in the midst of all the things that we are going through. All the tracks are amazing, but the ones for me are Great Jehovah, & We are glad!.. awesome!.
But you actually think Tye's is a great project.......how can you make an informed comment on Joe Pace CD?
Who is Tye? Never heard of him... #irrelevant. (LOL)
I think this album is targeting a different audience than the GA fans. I only liked a few songs on Fresh. I don't think I will be buying Fresh. I think his best album was the underground album Concepts and Ideas.
Concepts and Ideas was the joint!!
I don't think I'd be able to choose between Ideas and Concepts and the first label release, Life. I really don't think I could, lol. *trying* Nope. Couldn't do it, lol.
i'm open to d new release/sound/movement/whatever u wana call it.. havent heard anything apart from d single n i have been proven time n time again dat u cant judge a project based on its single, so i'm keeping an open mind... in some other news, is anyone aware of where one could purchase that ideas n concepts album? i know its been like a hot minute since they dropped it but can i get it anywhere?
"When the Rocks Hit the Ground" is THE song for me. I have never heard God's grace described so amazingly! I don't know how you guys don't like the project! Plus, the sound of his new background singers was amazing! Tye is just this creative GENIUS!
I don't think you can get Concepts and Ideas in stores or online. I heard back in the day Tye would sell the cds after his concerts. It was truly an underground/bootleg cd.
So negative. Ya sound bitter, friend :(
I like the new project from Tye (although not every song). But anyway, I think people have the misconception that the project is called Fresh because it's something that you haven't heard before when in reality, it's not that. Fresh to me is about a fresh start and has nothing to do with the notion of a fresh sound or whatever it is that's being interpreted by some of the previous posts. I do miss GA because I loved the way they were just all out and seemed to be on fire. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Pastor Tim that appears on the song, Keep Me, is the same guy who did the song with the one of the Williams Bros....and dude can straight sang! I love that track!! Eulogy, When the rocks hit the ground, champion, Holdin' on.... are my favorites for now. It took me more than one listen to get used to it but overall I do like the project and I pray that it does reach others and helps brings many to Christ.
Life was great as well.....I see your point. lol
