The Charts: Tye Tribbett Debuts At #1

Big congrats to Tye Tribbett, whose “Fresh” new album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart this week!  I am, in fact, listening to that album as I type this post.  Music for livin’. :-)

Kudos also to Wess Morgan, who debuted at #10 with Under An Open Heaven. Also, kudos to Joe Pace who debuted at #11 with his newest project, Praise for the Sanctuary.

The top 10 looks like this:

#1 | Tye TribbettFresh
#2 | LecraeRehab
#3 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love
#4 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#5 | Mavis StaplesYou Are Not Alone
#6 | Shekinah Glory MinistryRefreshed By Fire
#7 | WOW Gospel 2010
#8 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#9 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#10 | Wess MorganUnder An Open Heaven

I’m a bit dismayed that Israel Houghton’s Love God. Love People appears to have fallen from the #2 slot, totally out of the top 10 in just a week.  It’s so bizarre that I’m almost wondering if someone made an administrative error…

In any case, what do you think of the charts this week???

I agree with the part about Israel...I'm a little surprised by that.... Also, and I am in no way being funny or anything, but who at this point is buying Marvin Sapp's cd like that every week that it barely budges on the charts every single week? Don't we all have a copy by now? LOL Very happy for Pastor Sapp...that's just funny to me. lol

I wonder exactly how the charts work now. Is this based off of hard CD sales and digital sales? Do multiple track purchases count towards digital CD sales? Hmmm...

Those are good questions, because some of these are a little hard to believe over time if it's just hard (or digital) sales of the entire cd. If more than one song counts as a digital "cd sale", then I could see people buying "The Best In Me" and "Praise Him in Advance" digitally a little more realistically than I see people going out and buying that many copies of Marvin Sapp's entire cd every single week....

The charts are based on hard AND digital sales of the CD. Downloads of the individual songs do not count towards chart position.Typically, most of the sales are generated from the scans from retail outlet sales. However, when an artist performs and sells CDs at a venue, those sales count towards chart position too. Soundscan verifies the number of units reported against the number of units released. it is my belief that numbers are pretty air-tight and accurate.

Go Tye, it's yo' birf-day!!! Go Go Go!!! Congrats to him...and HONESTLY is retarded...LOL... now that was funny...As much as I love Marvin Sapp, when i hear "Best in Me", I turn the station. Have it on my Ipod, but I guess since I heard it so much this year. Guess peeps are still buying it, and nothing wrong with that. I guess they been procrastinating!:) and thinking that it will be in the bargain bin next to Latoya Jackson's Greatest Hits, if they wait. Yeah, right. And Israel, recount, please...probably some lazy admin assistant named Funquita , hit the wrong button at the Soundscan office.

the fact that israel is currently touring makes it even HARDER for me to believe that his sales have fallen off THAT much... but hey, who knows. But what i will say to those of you surprised by Marvin Sapp's record still selling.... Being a songwriter who has written on a major label gospel album, I STILL get royalties for two songs i wrote on an album that came out 5 years ago. And i thought the very same thing, how is this artists still selling THOUSANDS of copies of a 2005 record? Especially when he has two ADDITIONAL albums that have come out since. But with live shows, columbia house, internet download sales and the fact that gospel radio will still play (therefore promoting) a Mary Mary song from their FIRST album... it happens. LOL Also gospel music tends to have a long shelf life... So anyway, i know it can seem odd that thousands of people are buying an album years after its release... but it really is very common. .

All I wanna know is WHERE can I buy Wess Morgan's CD????? I still like to get a tangible CD (they're like books to me. I like to touch and turn pages and whatnot). That's VERY FRUSTRATING to me. It's not at the major retailers. There's one independent store in the metro Detroit area that has it. But it will probably cost $15-$16. Great points raised about Israel's drop from the list and with the rapidly rising choices to get to the music, are these charts--based on traditional/tangible CD sales--still relevant/accurate? I went to Israel's tour in metro Detroit in September 2010 and based on the CROWDED lines at his media table after the service/concert...sales have to be on the increase.

I have to say that I am surprised.

It maybe the fact that both Gospel and R&B music consumers are buying Pastor Sapp's CD.

Tam, you can purchase Wess Morgan's cd at Walmart for $10. It is a true worship cd. I'm loving it!

LOL! Yeah, I do the same, and again, it's only because they play it about 12 times a day on the local radio station here. Very very happy for him though!! "Funquita"??? And I'm the crazy one?? LOL

Congratulations to Tye! Great album. He definitely took a different approach with his album compared to his previous works. I applaud him for stepping out of the "usual" Gospel CD and really talking about personal struggles that everyone can relate to. Lecrae as #2? Can't knock it. His album "Rehab" is ON POINT as well. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. If anyone is in the NY area, Tye is going to be at "J.R." on Park Row this afternoon. Grace&Peace.

I think there is an error with LGLP listing. Anyway...gospel consumers have to continually branch out. LGLP is a masterpiece...the usual from Israel & Aaron...AUTOMATIC PURCHASE PEOPLE!
