I woke up with a hankering to hear some Mattie Moss Clark.
After watching numerous YouTube videos, I landed on this one (no video– just audio) of “They Were Overcome By The Word” by The Clark Sisters featuring their mother, Mattie Moss Clark. It’s on the Is My Living In Vain album and is probably one of my favorite cuts on that project (though, I guess they’re ALL my favorites, really).
Anyway, the chord progressions and harmonies on this song have always been incredible to me, if for no other reason than the fact that they were rather innovative for that time. Plus, they’re simply beautiful to me.
Check it out–
How about that?!

There will never be another Mattie Moss Clark; she was one of the greatest ministers of music the world has ever known. I am thankful and can reflect over the years we sang in her workshop choirs. She was so engaging and so real about the work that was assigned to her hands. And to hear this classic song; from her classic and anointed daughters makes my day! Love it...and yes; they were overcome by the word and the blood of the lamb...she was on the word lyrically with her songs.......Remember, It Won't Be Long? God is coming back after a church without a spot of wrinkle...wow...TWINKIE tore that song up!
I've been listening to this cd everyday for the past month! Good pick, EJ!!!
love it! I love the Clark family!
