Word Has It: Montell Jordan Leaves R&B For Full-Time Ministry?

Word has it that Montell Jordan is retiring from R&B to pursue full-time ministry.  According to Twitter messages sent from his account today, he will be the new Worship Pastor at Victory World Church in Norcross, Georgia.

Well, alright then!  I guess THIS is how we do it. :-)

Praise God for ya!

Sigh.... whatever happened to people getting the space to be trained and learned and SEASONED before being appointed to any kind of leadership role? I hope that Montell has solid mentorship in his new ministerial role.

How don't you know that he's been groomed for this? He hasn't been singing for a minute now. Just pray him up and wish him well.

Tam, I'm with you. Excited for his decision, but pray for discipling that is needed to operate fully in his calling. The church already has enough "talented" worship leaders who aren't anointed or ready to fully walk in their calling.

"I guess THIS is how we do it." ...the music popped in my head as soon as I read that! LMBO! I immediately felt the urge to do "the running man"! I won't assume that he hasn't been mentored/groomed/trained for this role since he's been out of the R&B limelight for a while now. I'll just simply pray that this decision was based on "the call"...and not the calls from the bill collectors, lol. If so, he'll be fine and the folks who serve under/beside him will be fine as well. Amen!

Hey Tam. Wanted to let you know I am a member of Victory and yes he has been getting trained and God is working through him. From the times I've talked to him he is somebody who is humble and is allowing the Holy Spirit to take over his life. Just thought I share.

He sings really good at Victory!

I remember when he was in the movie "Fighting Temptations" .. IDK but it just seemed like he was probably about to go for ministry even then...

@ Paul: you said it better than me! :-) Definitely excited but at the same time, concerned about preparation. @ Anthony: It's good to hear your positive feedback about Montell. I'm not throwing shade on the situation at all. I hope everything works out for good. However, what has happened to some of these R&B singers who come into ministry, some of those in pastoral leadership are SO EAGER to put them out there before they're spiritually ready to handle the pressure and scrutiny of public ministry ON TOP of the enemy's targeted attack on the music ministry. That's A LOT of pressure to put on a person who might not be ready. It's about MUCH MUCH more than just singing well. I hope that he's covered and mentored effectively.

Wait a minute, I recall an old interview with Montell where he said that he played in the church and wrote gospel songs before he hit it big with "This Is How We Do It."

  • Drew wrote on November 25, 2010

My only concern is that he is not going to do what a lot of R&B singers do when they say are going to do gospel music/ministry. Especially the ones who have not been relevant for a while. They do gospel music for a minute and the next thing you know they are back in the R&B game. I hope this is not the case here.

*correction "he is going to do"

A few months ago he featured on a Christian rap song remix called "Boom Pop" by Redd Lettaz. He raps. Peep the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZX55H74CEs

I'll say this, I was never a fan when he did secular music but I cant help but be excited about what God is doing. Score for the Kingdom !!! Montell is no different from most parise & worship leaders or ministers of music anywhere else, by that I mean someone doubted them too. Somebody doubted my pastor 48 years ago when he was called to the minsitry, they said he wouldnt last and to keep it really real, I questioned God several times when he made me praise & worship leader, but He did and We are doing great things. Somebody probably looks at some of you a little cock-eyed when you pick up a mic on Sundays too! :-) I'm gonna give Montell the benefit of the doubt and not just "the doubt."

OMG! Maranatha! I so get what you are sayin! I get so tired of Christian folk bashing any and everyone. I grew up with minister parents, not one but two! I was at church on Tuesday, on Friday, on Saturdays for three services, and on Sunday for 2-3 services faithfully for 18 years. I was born into the church, and frankly get so tired of the bashing of one another, We've forgotten what being a Christian really means, Being a critical Christian is sooooooo played! Most of us Christians couldn't go 30 days without being negative. Blessed is not a word, it's THE WORD. And it's a lifestyle. One that is far from being lived up to in my community, Go Montel! Do what God has for you. Just know that you are coming into the most critical community there is, Don't be fooled by the cross around our necks!

...one more thing....why is it that we always bash the R&B singer, yet WE buy their CD's and go to their concerts? Don't we know that gospel today is rooted from old R&B? Who says that you are a sinner for listening to r&b or even singing it? There is a difference between love and lust. If you are talking about true love, there is no reason u cannot sing about that, or listen to that. Where did this all start? Where did the division take place? Most of you work for secular companies...I think you should quit....most of you are wearing outfits from secular brands, I think you should take 'em off (this is no relation to a lust song, thank you, LOL)! Some of you are wearing jewlery that was handled by blood and slaves (do your research) so you should take it off! What I am saying is this: U can be in the world but not of it. Singing R&B does not make you devilish, just as much as writing negative comments on a Christian Blog will not send u to hell.

As we discuss and debate issues important to Kingdom living, we must be mindful that not all Christians are made to agree. The Apostle Paul was one of the Kingdom chief persecutors then became the church's chief critic. We must be able to view issues without the Christian bashing that is commonly done....ON BOTH SIDES. "Take it easy on R&B singers" doesn't solve the problem of unsaved folks getting Christian 'famous' and not drawing souls to Christ. Just as the "Holiness or Hell" folks ain't drawing people either. All things in moderation. Even our critique....ALL OF OUR CRITIQUE. BTW....I'm support Minister Jordan and pray for God to be glorified by his appointment. However, I do also pray that all of the things are in place spiritually for that to happen. I will never just assume that someone who takes an office is qualified for it. Show and prove. Carry on true believers!
