This is HOT!!!! The ladies of Mary Mary have done it again. Its slightly more reserved than I expected but they nailed it. Can't wait for the new album!!!
Another club bangah!!!! "Walking" as opposed to "Walk It Out".... LOLLLL!!!! It's nothing else to do at this point but laugh....
Exit gospel music genre, stage left! Go ahead and be the pioneers of inspirational R&B! Ladies, if the title fits, wear it and wear it proudly!
**confesses that the beat is hot and catch me on an extra carnal day I'd bump this in my (wish list) convertible driving up a California highway! LOL!**
welp, surprised it's the first single BUT i think its a cool song though... i like it, like the vibe. Feels more of a summer record in a way. And i noticed that they changed the album title... didnt they announce it was OMG some months ago? I kinda thought it would change... especially after Usher had his big song...
This is a great song...I know some people are spectacle about their music but I have followed them since their beginnings and I trust that they are trully witnesses for God!!! They actually posted some clips of their new music on their youtube channel...they got some great songs!!! Im a MaryMaryologist and I approve this message!!!
How do you know they are "truly witnesses for God?" Where did you follow them to? Where did you follow them to to discover that they are truly witnesses for God?
Did you mean "skeptical" as in "I know some people are SKEPTICAL about their music...."
@ The Bull: Your question would be valid for those who may claim that they were NOT witnesses for God. I have not made such a claim.
I'm simply curious to know the criteria that either an individual or a collective body might apply... or maybe in the gospel music genre, being a "witness for God" (however this phrase is defined) is not/should apply at all.
One really does not have to be "saved, sanctified, Holy Ghost filled, fire baptized" (whatever this phrase is really supposed to mean) to sing a gospel song, right?
its one of those songs which you have 2 let grow on you,but after listening to it about 5 times,i like it but at first i thought of it as just a feel good sonf, but i like it now.....good wording
Right...right. I really don't like to get into debates over a gospel artists salvation or lack thereof. Unless we know these people personally, we can't REALLY know. We may hear about them doing things that don't particularly exemplify a worship lifestyle. They may or may not truly repent. So I just like to critique the music.
I like it. Mary Mary is always going ouside the box but they are always ministry minded. I was a little worried when I saw this at first. Once the music started and I heard them sing I sighed in relief! NO AUTO-TUNE....Yeah!!!
Actually it's a mixed sample of House Club Dance Diva Crystal Waters .... LA daA deee Lah DAa Daaa !!!! But "they Ain't homeless" ....... (LOL) Holy House Music Saint Batman!!!! Heeeeyyyyyyy party ovah heerrrrreeee!!!!! Merry,Mury an't mad attcha though! nly you all could get away with intepeting that into contemporary inspirational. That's what it is .... come on now not a bad song at all. I Just don't call it gospel. It's contemporary urban dance inspirational. CUDI
I must ask why you seem to dislike everything that is experimental or different. I have read your comments on this song and you don't even seem like you tried to listen to the song, do you just like "traditional" gospel music or do you even like experimental types of Gospel music?
@Keith, I'm with you...becuz everything now has that "cheesy radio praise & worshippey" sound that radio will always play...so common now. Can we be original? Thanks to Mary Mary for something different.
My only question (and I'm being really sincere here guys so pls feel free and respond *smile*) um whats the message in the song? where are they (we) meant to be walking to/from.... I dont quite understand the song.....
Nique, The fact that you think this song is experimental or different is a clear signal that you have a LIMITED IDEA what experimental or different is. There's at least one comment that notes that the song sounds like a T.I. song or has a similar sample. How experimental or different is a recycled beat?
I listened to the song. I was not impressed. I like all kinds of gospel music (although I dodge quartet music but every once in a while a quartet song catches my ear). This song was unimpressive because it doesn't sound any different than any other club banger. And I'm not even talking about the (lack of) so-called gospel parts of it.
Vincent... sigh.... THANK YOU. THANK YOU. Thank you for this: "Just don't call it gospel."
And I can agree with you that it's not a bad song. It's not a great song. It's quite manufactured with the recycled beats and all, but it's a decent club/drop top drive summer banger.
It seems that when I say such things, the detractors (a three-syllable word for "haters) want to hate with the cowardly thumb downs.... Oh well....
Wow! Is it a song to win souls or to be the soundtrack to a fashion show? I wonder if Jesus is pleased? (Reference from the Boondocks episode about a character similar to Tyler Perry).
LOLLLLL! The jokes write themselves....
I don't think people are mad at the style. We know contemporary gospel has been in existence for decades now and gospel music will continue to evolve. That's not what people are saying. The ongoing problem with Mary Mary and their music these days is the lack of content in their lyrics. They do not sing THE GOSPEL and they release this music and call it "gospel". That's where the disconnect lies with them and their "ministry" now, if you can even call it that. I think Warryn Campbell is a usually prolific producer but he just samples an old 90's song. Anybody can do that. So where is the genius?
"...but he just samples an old 90's song. Anybody can do that. So where is the genius?"
Sigh.... you just said what I was thinking. How do you get genius out of sampling? THANK YOU!
So noted about limiting any critique to "just" the music. But is that really possible? The music has to come through a vessel. And in the case of gospel music, the vessel, is (supposed to be) that much more important because one has (supposedly) made a commitment to the God of their faith to whom they are (supposed to be) singing about.
The Bible says you are to be able to respond to someone if they ask you why you believe what you believe. Same principle applies per my question to Juan: why does he/she believe what he/she believes about Mary Mary?
I don't think it will do as well as some of their first singles from the other albums. There is always a debate between gospel vs inspirational. Truth be told, all of us that confess to be saved don't listen to GOSPEL 100% of the time. I don't and I am an elder at my church and I'm married. Total Praise doesn't do much for me when I want to be intimate with my wife!! LOL I thought throwing Jesus in their at the end was kind of funny considering before that point to me it was just a cool positive song. My thought is, did they have to throw Jesus in there? For them probably so because they are considered GOSPEL artists. What's wrong with just a positive song? Secular artists will sometimes do things that are inspiritational but they are still overall considered secular. If they decided to sing WALKING without throwing Jesus in the mix, does that mean they are not GOSPEL artists? No, just means its a practical message. I've heard preachers preach practical life messages with no scriptural warrant but still produces positive changes in the lives of God's people. I'm just saying........
Folk the defintion of gospel = The Scriptures, The Bible, The Good Book (SACRED WRITINGS) ; Verity, actuality, fact (TRUTH). Look it up in any dictionary. True ... times change! God's Holy Word? ... Never! NO ... The Gospel isn't JUST for the unsaved! It's for everyone whom believeth! Yes there will always be critics. True Mahalia Jackson wasn't accepted by the church at 1st then went on to become the Queen of Gospel Music. True we have Shirley Caesar, The Clark, Sisters, Tramaine Hawkins, The Winans, Kirk Franklin etc. List can go on and on! Yet know when they open their mouths? The LYRICS ALLOW IT to be KNOWN that it's about JESUS 100% , combined with Scriptures, edifying man's spirit. Not just only commercially placable, with a grooving beat, that makes you want to tap your feet! Feel good music & True Gospel Music are two entirely different things.
Now when you can take a secular song, and reinterpet it with powerful, meaningful, lyrics that ministers God's Word, that encourage one to seek Jesus for purpose, intervention, or guidance in their everyday life, that edifies & motivates man's inner Spirit to become better, to keep the faith, to persevere through difficulties? THAT'S GOSPEL ..... NOT Something that just wants to make you bounce, & dance for a minuet because it has a banging beat. Throwing Jesus name up in the last verse of a song Doesn't make it gospel! Although it will make it a hit to sale for profit!
"...does that mean they are not GOSPEL artists?"
I think the label comes into question upon a non-judgmental examination of their body of music and compare it to the INDUSTRY (which are NOT biblical) standards of the gospel music category and without question, Mary Mary's body of music is moving AWAY from the gospel music genre and toward something else. And everybody needs to admit that and Mary Mary should be bold enough to call themselves who they (may) really want to be: inspirational R&B artists.
Your words here "I thought throwing Jesus in their at the end was kind of funny considering before that point to me it was just a cool positive song" reflect what other folk are thinking: the Name Jesus was just tossed into the song to satisfy some of their die-hard fans who REFUSE to buy anything that's not in the gospel music section. And to that I say to Mary Mary: STOP pimping the Lord's Name to keep fans. And to those die-hard gospel music buyers I say : STOP allowing yourselves to be pimped by folk who say and do things just for your money.
And about your point about listening to gospel 100 percent of the time: that's not what this conversation is about. You say you're an elder and you're married (interesting that you put your MINSTERIAL TITLE above more important role as a HUSBAND, but ok) and that you don't listen to gospel all the time. Ok. Do you. It's not what goes into a man that defies him. It is what COMES OUT of him.... (Matthew 15; Mark 7).
I have had some interesting "debates" with one of my dear sisterfriends who is a beautiful psalmist. The process you describe here: "Now when you can take a secular song, and reinterpret it with powerful, meaningful, lyrics that ministers God's Word" is what she calls "redeeming the song". She makes a strong case, but I feel like it's a cheap, noncreative way of making gospel music. However, some of these types of songs are as you say, include powerful, meaningful lyrics that minister God's Word and they are quite clever. These types of songs should be the exceptions, not the norm.
Kudos to your post that clarifies the definition and role of The Gospel and gospel music.
or venture far from the thumbs down...i have a loyal fan/stalker on here who loves me in a peculiar way!! Go figure! But, the attention speaks volumes!
I love it!
Vincent - I totally agree with you. There is a time and place for all things. Is telling people to take it one day at a time necessarily scripture, no. Does it produce positive change in people's lives, yes. Now having said that, my wife and I advise couples on marital issues at our church. Some things we till them are absolutes based upon scripture!!!!! Some things are words of wisdom, not necessarily scripture but its not evil either, that has affected our lives positively and so we share that with them as well. Doesn't change my status an Elder in the Lord's church. My life still lines up with the biblical standards of an Elder. Now, for me the song is cool! Not their best, in my opinion, but its a pretty nice song. I pose a question to the bloggers, what are your thoughts as it relates to Christian/Gospel artists singing/opening for Secular concerts? Vincent, you stated we should never be like, desire to become or compete with the world. Is singing at a secular event an opportunity to witness or is it an opportunity to gain fans and become more acceptable by the secular audience?
I must say it does not immediately point to Christ. However, it isn't something that will mess up my "walk" with Christ either. Musicians borrow from each other. This is a known fact, so the T.I. reference does not bother me. If Bebe and Cece can do it and still rock it as inspirational artists that are played on GOSPEL RADIO STATIONS, I say "walk on". I don't believe they made this song as a stumbling block to their brother (1 corinthians 8), but if you feel this song deters you from Christ, I would pray before listening again.
Thank you Tam!
I'm definitely not against someone taking an inspirational song (i.e., "Jesus Is Love" by The Commodores, Heather Headley & Smokie Norful or "Wake Up Everybody" redone by whomever). But when a regular "no purpose, just jamming" song is taken with a simple switch of words, large music sample & Jesus said 20 times-it doesn't "redeem" the song. It makes it mundane. There. I said it.
And I don't feel that way with gospel music only. If you can take the time to go in and RE-write a song, then you can use that same energy and write a NEW song...in it's entirety.
JMHO.
I can't stop playing this! Very nice groove. They chose a good song for their first single. It's inspirational and I, for one, am glad they didn't neglect to mention WHO they're walkin with! Funny they get criticized for not singing "Jesus" in their songs, and then when they do, their intentions are questioned. Gotta love church folks. =]
The genius is Baby Dubb knows what will work for them. That's what great "genius" producers do for the talent, he's kinda like a tailor. He fits the artist with the music regardless if it was a sample or not. Secondly if you have ever listened to Mary Mary's album's you would know that their singles are usually an upbeat catchy type of song that drawls in the attention of a predominantly secular audience. ("Get Up", "In the Morning", Shackles, etc.) then on the CD you will have songs like "One Minute", "I'm Running", "I Worship You", "It Will All be Worth It" etc. I think its a great Marketing plan and a great strategy for giving the Gospel. Now I think you are misunderstanding some things about the music industry period. Once you get signed you are no longer in ministry, you are a product of a company regardless of who you are and what you sing about. Shirley Caesar still has to worry about Album sales or she will get dropped. Their label still has to be pleased with their work, and I am happy that their label (which is not a gospel label) allows them to say "Jesus" and "God". Many "Gospel artist don't even say that anymore check the lyrics.
I'm going to have to back Tam up on this one. Until minute 2:51 out of 3:33 I didn't hear any spiritual references. In general I don't know what the heck this song is about or why I should even care. I like a "tight' beat just as much as the next person, but I don't listen to secular music for a reason. Anyhoo. That's my two cents for now.
You know, this song perfectly illustrates the point EJ made in a recent post regarding the lyrical content of "Gospel" music vs. CCM. However, I don't think you can actually quantify this music as gospel but it still lowers the genre's credibility. SMH. And to the posters who think that this type of music is going to inspire the unsaved to go buy the albums and "then" hear the true gospel message, keep thinking. Remember when you weren't saved? Would you have ever even crossed over into the "christian" section in a music store?
If you believe that being gullible is thinking outside of the little "black" box that you think in than I will be more than gullible. Get some joy in your life please
Lady please find a hobby or something so you can become a joyful person. I guess you thought insulting my intelligence was a clever thing to do, but it makes you look bitter and we have enough bitter Christians walking around. So just do the message board a favor and please find some joy please.
I think they're playing with the idea of "walking with Jesus" and making mistakes but having him along side. Would've liked a little more inclusion of Him in the song, though! But still a catchy song!
Your choice of words is an unfortunate reflection of your own internal turmoils, evidenced by your inability to STAY ON TOPIC.
How could I insult something that's clearly overshadowed by your bewildering obsession about my joy? Now that's funny! LOLLLLL!!!!!! Whewwwwwww!
Wow! All I can say is that there are some REALLY uptight folks on this blog.
So are we saying that a person who loves the Lord with all their heart and soul can't write/sing about anything else but the Lord? I believe writers are inspired by many life circumstances including their salvation. Why not be ale to sing about them all? I think there is beauty in knowing the artist is saved AND has a life as well (wife/mom/sister, etc). I'm sure there is inspiration to draw from in all of those. These boxes we try to put folk in are so limiting to the message. Geeze!
Oh and by the way, I don't particularly like the song and I am a HUGE Mary Mary supporter.
I know ppl will disagree but here is my 2 cents.
Mary, Mary are gospel artists not by the lyrics they sing alone but by their testimony and life. Of course we will never know someone's heart so we can only go by the fruit that they bear. They claim to be followers of Christ and even though their lyrics might be more inspirational we have to discern the message of the songs. Is it promoting Godly/Biblical principles? Is the song leading people away from Christ and Godly principles?
A Gospel artist should not have to quote a scripture or be churchy in their music in order for us to believe what type of artist they are. I rather listen to inspirational music from an artist that claims to be a follower of Christ. A wonderful inspirational song could be birthed from Islamic or Buddhism philosophy. At lease I know what Tina and Erica are being inspired by, and we know this b/c they are GOSPEL Artist. When they deter from confessing Christ singing lyrics that do not stand in line w/ the Word of God then we will have a serious problem.
And let us not get tangled up by the music (beats and genre). God is the creator of all things. He has created music. Any new genre is just discovering what GOD created. We cannot create something out of nothing. We see this in the evolution of Western music (baroque era, romantic ear and classical ear, etc) w/ composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, etc. The evolution was based on what a previous composer discovered or experimented with. Since God created music we can reclaim any genre for the Kingdom. With that said this issue w/ gospel artists is with their lyrics and image
Vincent posted the definition of Gospel that I want to examine "The Scriptures, The Bible, The Good Book (SACRED WRITINGS) ; Verity, actuality, fact (TRUTH)."I Like the part of the definition the said Gospel is about the "TRUTH". various religions may discover TRUTH but it is GOD’s truth. Jesus said that he is the way the TRUTH and the life. If Mary, Mary becomes an inspirational group (in name only) but still claim to be followers of Christ and their lyrics are pointing to the TRUTH. Would that be a problem?
if everyone who has a question of the message of this would listen and stop just criticizing ....it's about the walk we all {as Christians} are on... the falls, the ups and downs... or just the ups {for the extra holy people lol} ...seriously... it's for those who can admit that this really is a press... not overly spiritual people who can't enjoy a song... even Jesus rested, even Jesus enjoyed a a nice party {at the wedding when He turned water to wine...lol}...
^ur right. There are people who have a appearance of a "concerned" person, but they get a thrill out of criticizing and being "right". Have u guys went and spoken to unbelievers and those who don't like church music to see what THEY get out of it. Nobody is stupid. Ppl try to make the gospel so complicated but the foundational principles of the gospel is SIMPLE! Why does Jesus say that we should come to him as a child? Because the message is simple enough that a CHILD can grasp it.
Being the mary mary fan that I am: I loved it...I totally get the message and its a song that just makes me feel good when I hear it...I'm gettin the cd when it comes out!!!
I love this song....I TOTALLY GET THE MESSAGE unlike the overly saved and sanctified folks....the message is fairly simple: your life should reflect who you walk with(god) everyday you'll make mistakes but with God's help you can get up and try it again, take the time out to enjoy life...god gave it to you to appreciate it, don;t rush through life take it easy because tomorrow is not promised...now i may not know the whole bible forwards and backwards and i may not be able to quote every single scripture and use big words and break down the bible passage for passage but i know who to use my gift of discernment to understand what this song means...so i say go ahead mary mary keep making simple gospel music that can reach the UNSAVED and those who aren't so "caught up in Jesus" I wish you all nothing but the best....you can reach some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time....
This is HOT!!!! The ladies of Mary Mary have done it again. Its slightly more reserved than I expected but they nailed it. Can't wait for the new album!!!
Hmm...Cool flow. I like!
And another one... I'll walk wit'em!!
I like it can we buy it on itunes?
Nice track! It's got a nice summer groove feel to it.
Very nice!!!!!!!!!!!
(cue debate about Mary Mary going to hell for their music...)
they sound matured. it's very funky(jill scott?..sorry) nice tho- they always got those club beats.:) they encourage me to use my gifts

For those old school heads crystal waters gypsy women comes to mind?
Where are they walking? Are they walking FROM somewhere or TO somewhere? Jesus' actual name mentioned at 2:45-2:46.... (clutches the pearls!) LOL!
Shocked at the "Jesus" mention towards the end of the song! Up until that point, I didn't know what this song was supposed to be about.
Why does this sound like T.I. song?
welp, surprised it's the first single BUT i think its a cool song though... i like it, like the vibe. Feels more of a summer record in a way. And i noticed that they changed the album title... didnt they announce it was OMG some months ago? I kinda thought it would change... especially after Usher had his big song...
Jarrett, stop it!! LOL
@DJ, yep...it sounds like Crystal Waters to me. that's the first thing i thought of.
You know I had to LOL
It is okay, not thrilled with the single, it sounds like it could be played in the clubs.
I like it, the beat caught my attention right away. It's nice song, and it's catchy. I'm walking! @ Courtney : I had to bob my head on it, lol!
yeah; it kinda has a 90s feel and groove to it
This is a great song...I know some people are spectacle about their music but I have followed them since their beginnings and I trust that they are trully witnesses for God!!! I like it. Very calm & mellow, different for them.
It's whatever!!
Thumbs up times ETERNITY! Hahahahahahaahah!
How do you know they are "truly witnesses for God?" Where did you follow them to? Where did you follow them to to discover that they are truly witnesses for God? Did you mean "skeptical" as in "I know some people are SKEPTICAL about their music...."
Oh Yes! I knew it! I looked it up on youtube. T.I. also sampled that song for "Why You Wanna"
How do you know they're not? lol...
see they are becoming more inspirational now

Woooooow. That's a first.

Joel, hmmm...great points!
or venture far from the thumbs down...i have a loyal fan/stalker on here who loves me in a peculiar way!!
"Something Big" should have been the single....
JMHO.
I must say it does not IMMEDIATELY point to Christ. However, it isn't something that will mess up my "walk" with Christ either. -Agreed.
Bopping my head!!!
Not Gospel. It's like they just "threw" Jesus in there at the end.
My thought exactly.
Why are you such a negative person?
love it ! May the Lord cont. 2 use them 2 speak 2 the masses in this generation through song ! Jesus walking w/me makes the difference !!!
Why are you such a gullible person?
You know, this song perfectly illustrates the point EJ made in a recent post regarding the lyrical content of "Gospel" music vs. CCM. However, I don't think you can actually quantify this music as gospel but it still lowers the genre's credibility. SMH. And to the posters who think that this type of music is going to inspire the unsaved to go buy the albums and "then" hear the true gospel message, keep thinking. Remember when you weren't saved? Would you have ever even crossed over into the "christian" section in a music store?
I really wasn't impressed. They normally come out with a hitting single. I don't think this should be their single.
If you believe that being gullible is thinking outside of the little "black" box that you think in than I will be more than gullible. Get some joy in your life please
If you think that sampling is a form of genius, wow... just wow.... Gotta keep hoping against hope....
Whewwwwwww!
LOL!! You said a plethora of things!
Because it is a T.I. sampled beat.
I really like the song. Surprised it's the first single though, but it is a good song.
The Mary's have done it again! I LOVE IT!!!
Ma'am get a coke and crack a smile. Blessings
Based on your performance here, those blessings are TAINTED! Yikes on that! Can't curse and bless out of the same mouth. NASTY! Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!
This ain't EVEN gospel. Mary Mary stop playin...........:(
The song is great! It focuses the listener on walking in the Spirit!
I wish people would UNBOX God's Gospel. The only people who don't get the message are those who DON'T WANT TO.
Being the mary mary fan that I am: I loved it...I totally get the message and its a song that just makes me feel good when I hear it...I'm gettin the cd when it comes out!!!
like!
