I’m An Alternate Background Vocalist For Kirk Franklin…

I’m an alternate background vocalist for Kirk Franklin.  And sometimes I sing with Donald Lawrence & Co. Like, when their people can’t make it, I head on out.  We just kick it on the road and stuff…

Ok, none of that is true, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t pretend like it is… often.

In my own imaginary music land, I’m a background singer for Kirk Franklin and/or Donald Lawrence.  They’ve got some of the tightest vocals and dopest songs in the gospel biz.  And they look like they have TONS of fun doing it.

I’m “one of them” while riding in my car, working at my desk, singing around the house… I believe I’m “one of them” everywhere EXCEPT at an actual concert of theirs (that’s how folks get arrested).  I take my time and learn the parts well… y’know, just in case they call me one day… ;-)

Anyway.  That’s my confession of my imaginary gospel world.  What’s yours?

Finish the statement– “Sometimes, I make believe that I’m a background singer for __________.”

Sometimes, I make believe that I'm a backgound singer for Fred Hammond. His parts are sometimes complicated, but I try to figure my part (Alto) out).

My guilty secret for real though? OK, so I know that Sinbad doesn't really sing, but I think I could be one of his posse and just hum in the background for effect. What you think?

In the Tyler Perry plays, I'm an extra for Brown. At family holidays I can sing "This is Your Granddaddy" like no one else and shouting...let's move on. LOL. BGV for Beverly Crawford and Kathy Taylor (I'm a groupie), Donald Lawrence & Extra Friends, Kurt Carr & the Additional Kurt Carr Singers, Ricky Dillard & NEW G (the somewhere between Chicago and Atlanta version, with washboards in the choir stand). Last but not least, Judith Christie McAllister, just because she wouldn't stand for my foolishness.

In my mind I'm a background vocalist for Kim Burrell, Kirk Franklin (standing right next to Ike), Marvin Sapp (just add me to Myron Butler and Levi), Donald Lawrence (cracking jokes with Blanche and DeWayne and Flloyd), The Clark Sisters, LeAndria Johnson, and I sing background for Sunday Best and the BMI Trailblazers Luncheons lol

  • malachithaman wrote on March 24, 2011

I saw Chrisette Michele live and she has some of the TIGHEST background vocalists I've heard...I'm a big background vocal fanatic cause some of them sound better than the actual singer..Jill Scott, Ledisi, Angie Stone, D'Angelo, Alicia Keys, and Beyonce have some baaaad background vocalists too

I always thought I was a Kirk Franklin Background singer. I remember when he had the family, I learned everyone's name just so I felt like I was a part of the group! I also do part time back up for Fred and Israel.......on special occasions, Kim B (that's what I call her) calls on me for a concert or live recording...lol

I was on schedule for the Kim Burrell session to sing "Calvary" but..(cough! cough!) I got sick! When I get off of work I go to late sessions with Take 6 while Mark writes on the spot and Cedric transcribes for the group. In the summer when I'm free from teaching I love to fly in and out of town singing for D. Lawrence, K Franklin and Israel!

  • Julanda Davies wrote on March 30, 2011

I've sang with John P. Kee and the New Life Community Choir since I was 8 Right next to Shiela Lankin! MM Hmm Sure do!

  • IVAN wrote on March 31, 2011

this is too ironic! LOL When God's Property came out, you couldn't tell me I wasn't part of the group! I even wanted to purchase a shirt with their name on it and pretend i was in the 'stomp' video. Then when they transitioned to 1NC, i was a part of that group too (in my mind lol) but now...Vashawn Mitchell or Wiliam Mcdowell. But of course, i would be no good singing background vocals because more than likely I'd be too busy worshipping the Lord on my face on the flo' LOL "i give myself away" just does something to my spirit!! Im very much so in love with WORSHIP songs...songs that usher me into the presence

  • Angel wrote on April 3, 2011

How about a song that I would like to be a background singer on but who sings it? It's a choir or small group of singers with a lead and part of the chorus is "awesome ruler" which they echo 3 times. I think it's fairly new. It's a mid- to fast-paced song. Thanks in advance

  • Mia_v4c wrote on April 3, 2011

Off the top of my head, look up: Awesome Wonder - Youthful Praise You are the Living Word - Fred Hammond I hope this helps! Keep on..."sangin in the background"! ;-)

  • Angel wrote on April 3, 2011

Thanks for the , but it's neither one of those songs.
