I’ve blogged and tweeted about this until I can’t blog and tweet about it anymore. But I’ll try! If you don’t go and buy this incredible Kim Burrell album today, I don’t know what to tell ya…
The Love Album is available NOW in stores. Produced by Asaph Ward, the 10-track project is sonically and stylistically reminiscent of her Everlasting Life album [read: all of you who've been saying "I want an album like Everlasting Life... this is it.]
The vibe of the album is jazzy and playful, with each tune being pretty strong on its own. Some of my favorites are “Let’s Make It To Love,” “Sweeter,” “Love So Pure” and “Open Up The Door.”
Perhaps most incredible, however, are the remakes that Kim takes on– Earth Wind & Fire’s “Love’s Holiday,” DeBarge’s “Love Me In A Special Way,” and the Clark Sisters’ “Jesus Is A Love Song” are all tastefully done, paying homage to the originals while spinning them a bit as well.
The perspective that The Love Album puts on “love,” and our relationship with God, is progressive. Lyrically, it is filled with love songs that one might not immediately think to associate with Jesus, but the fit is not strained or unnatural. Musically, it’s a jazz/R&B-styled project that works well with Kim’s voice and approach.
This is a must-have for your music collection. Kim Burrell fans will not be disappointed, nor will fans of tried-and-true classic love songs. Beyond that, I’m betting that this album will pick up a bunch of new followers, which means an increased listening reach for Kim Burrell and, most importantly, for the gospel. And that’s nothing but… love.

Brotha Percy’s 7 word reviews: KIM BURRELL “THE LOVE ALBUM” Shanachie Music ... 1. Unique 2. Passionate 3. Soothing 4. Warm 5. Vivacious 6. Refreshing 7. Jazzy My faves: “Pray For Love,” “Sweeter,” “Jesus Is A Love Song,” “A Lil’ More Time,” “Love In A Special Way” and “Love’s Holiday.”
And people were worried about this album. I bought it and will play it in my car ride home.
I wish she had stuck to original songs.... Lalah Hathaway did a better version of "Love's Holiday" and NO ONE (not even the great KB) can sing one of my favorite songs "Love Me in a Special Way" better than El D's original.... I *heart* Kim and I'm resisting buying this album because I'm less interested in hearing her sing anything beyond gospel but she is letting the people have it...her voice is intoxicating.... Maybe I'll ITunes a couple of the songs and keep "Everlasting Life" on repeat....
This cd is Kim at her best!!!!!
"Jesus Is a Love Song" was already an intoxicating tune whose steadily paced, deliberate tempo and soaring vocals draw you into the song and allow you to get lost. (Remember Twinkie singing the line: "...could it be a dream or is it realityyyyyyyyyyyy. Sounds like aaaaaaaaaa symphony, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea, yea) Kim's version adds another dimension with her signature licks, twists and runs. The track is slamming. This is one of my favorites cuts on the CD. Interestingly enough this track makes me long for a collaboration between Kim and Kierra Sheard. I think their voices together would make for awesome music. And did I mention I LOVE the CD. Congratulations Kim Burrell! Thanks for being an artist and using the gift God gave you to bring joy into the lives of his people.
Adding to admit I spoke to soon... at least about "Love Me in a Special Way".... Can I say that maybe she's the queen of the reprise like Pastor Marvin Winans is the king of the reprise? That's what is winning me over... the intoxicating twists and turns she's doing at the end of the songs.... I'll keep listening! :-)
KIM BURRELL~THE LOVE ALBUM!!!!!! All that can be said is...WOW!!!!! What a beautiful project Kim has done and its so refreshing to hear new offerings and concepts from such a well respected artist in the music community, particularly in gospel. Kim is in good form vocally like the commentator says, sonically, stylistically, and spiritually! SHE IS SANGIN' HER FACE OUT~WHEW!!!!! The things she's doing with her voice are spell-bounding and jaw-dropping ridiculous!!!! In addition to all of that, she's ministering to the soul, mind, & spirit in only that Kim-way we all come to know and love. Nothing's missing and all the elements that makeup a great album is there, great arrangements, lyrics, melody, harmony, rhythm-Asaph Alex Ward did an amazing job producing(which was so great to see the 2pair up again) along with Corey Henry. What's most exciting and interesting to me musically, is that Kim has challenged herself to go to another level with an ease by embodying and giving each tune its own identity. I love the title and everything about her messages~what this world really need now is more love and this record is indication of that..if some are worried that she's departing from the sound of her earlier offerings some of that's on there too...in other words the essence of the Kim Burrell we all know and love is right there giving it to us! Of course, some pieces will have to grow on some of us whose looking for Try Me Again & Everlasting Life! LOL! Lets remember folks its been about 14years since Everlasting Life, Kim's official debut to the world-wide industry (minus TRY ME AGAIN~debut to the gospel community mostly)...So much has changed stylistically, musically, subject-matter-wise, not to mention all the advancement in technology that have caused the Gospel Industry itself as a whole to grow in viability, since the release of that album. When Everlasting Life dropped, cds were still selling pretty well and the idea of lime wires, mp3's, or myspace, fb, twitter to get the word out about a new record seemed far-fetched. So I maybe just a tad bias when it comes to Kim and perhaps I too was sorta looking for some type of "I'll Keep Holding On/Holyghost" type of cut on here, but I am glad to see her back with a solid record that stands to be a classic like everything else she does. Check it out!!!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!! I hope she tours to promote this album.
I too didn't really like her covers except for Jesus is a Love Song........I love Kim but she can't touch Lalah Hathaway's version of "Love's Holiday"......hands down! She doesn't a nice version of "Love Me In a Special Way" but her cover of "Jesus Is a Love Song".....I LOVE! simply beautiful!
Kim Burrell has a very unique and beautiful voice. Her ability to twist phrases and individual notes is amazing. I am really enjoying this new album!
