The Charts: Top 5 Stays Put 'Til Marvin Sapp Dazzles Next Week

Things stay the same for one more week in the top 5 slots of Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart–

WOW Gospel 2010 rests at #1, BeBe & CeCe WinansStill is at #2, James Fortune & FIYA’s Encore is #3, followed by Tamela Mann and Fred Hammond at #4 and #5, respectively.

In terms of drama and excitement, the chart has been a little “blah” for the past month or so.  The last albums to enter the marketplace and make a splash were WOW Gospel 2010 and James Fortune & FIYA’s Encore at the end of January.

Kudos to Bishop Paul Morton, whose Memorable Moments album remains at #8 for the second week straight, and a big “I see you, dude” to Earnest Pugh for re-entering the top 10 at #9.

Next week, Marvin Sapp’s Here I Am (which hit stores yesterday) will land at #1 and stay there for quite some time… like, MANY MONTHS, I’m predicting.  If you saw my post yesterday, you know that even Billboard is predicting that he’ll have the highest debut across all genres next week, with at least 70,000 units expected and a top 5 showing in the Billboard Top 200 (not just the Gospel Album chart).

Following Sapp’s release, the only other albums that I expect to make strong debuts in the near future on the Gospel Album chart are Myron Butler & Levi’s Revealed (due March 30th, EMI Gospel) and Karen Clark Sheard’s All In One (April 6th, Karew Records).

I doubt that they’ll move 70,000 units in their first week, but both albums are INCREDIBLE to me and I think you’d be wise to cop ‘em as soon as they hit…  no lie.  Full album reviews of those two projects coming soon.

Whatd’ya think???

The Charts: Bishop Paul Morton Debuts At #8

A new Bishop Paul Morton compilation album, Memorable Moments, debuted at #8 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart this week.  The project features some of his greatest hits, including “Cry Your Last Tear” and “Let It Rain”.

I love to hear Bishop Morton sing– even more, I love to WATCH him sing.  Great man of God with lots of gifts…  Did anyone pick up the compilation project? Check it out by clicking here.

In related news, WOW Gospel 2010 still sits at #1 on the chart, followed by BeBe & CeCe Winans and James Fortune & FIYA at #2 and #3, respectively.

Tamela Mann’s The Master Plan is at #4 and Fred Hammond’s Love Unstoppable rounds out the top 5.

And that’s about it.

Gearing Up: Join Me At The Gospel Heritage Conference!

In a couple of weeks, Dr. Teresa Hairston (Gospel Today) will be hosting her annual Gospel Heritage Praise & Worship Conference in Jacksonville, FL.  It’s gonna be a two-day event that you do NOT wanna miss, featuring worship services, musical offerings, workshops and panels that’ll inspire, encourage and equip you.

Check out the flyers below to see just a SAMPLE of some of the folks participating– from Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker and Kirk Franklin to Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Jonathan Nelson and Paul Morton… on and on and on.

During the conference, I’ll be speaking on two panels geared toward young adults (peep my lil’ photo on the second flyer, top right… LOL).  One panel discussion will focus on what the “new” music industry looks like, the other talks about careers opps in that new music industry.  My panel peers will include some of the best and brightest in the gospel game and I’m excited to be a part of it.

Lonnie Hunter of Praise 103.9 in Philadelphia was awarded with the Announce Of The Year Award. And the Central South Distribution REACH Awards were awarded to Vickie Hill (Saginaw, MI), Willie Mae MacIver (Dallas, TX) and Michael A. Davis (Memphis, TN).

I was surprised only by about two of these wins– I thought that Praise & Worship CD Of The Year would go to Israel Houghton.  He really got shafted this year, because The Power Of One was one of the best albums to come out in 2009.  The fact that he was only nominated in three categories, one of which was for packaging… c’mon.  But, kudos to Stephen Hurd anyhow.

Second, I didn’t think Hezekiah Walker & LFC would walk away with Artist Of The Year.  I really figured it would go to Donald Lawrence.  Either way, I’m thrilled.  I have loved Pastor Walker for YEARS and I couldn’t be more excited for him… he definitely deserved to be recognized and that album is an absolute favorite from the past year.

So, that’s THAT.  If you get Gospel Music Channel, the show airs on February 28th at 8pm ET/7pm CST.  BUT, it will likely air in your region before that… I’ll post the local dates and times when the Stellars post it… I can’t type all of that! LOL

And check back here throughout the week for my recaps– I went a lot of places, chatted with a lot of folks, and I’ve got LOTS to tell you.  Deal?  DEAL!

In the meantime, TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK of the winners!!!

In The News: Stellar Awards Nominees Announced

Soooo, if you were followin’ my tweets, you got up-to-the-minute results of the nominees.  My fingers HURT from typing so quickly on that BlackBerry!

For those of you who missed it, click here for a full list of nominees.

I’m disappointed that Sheri Jones-Moffett, Coko, 21:03, Melinda Watts, Damita Haddon and Kevin LeVar’s names are not anywhere among the nominees.  Each had great projects and should have been recognized.  Majorly not okay.

I’m very happy, though, for artists like Donald Lawrence (one of my faves this year), Kierra Sheard, Mary Mary, Hezekiah Walker, Israel Houghton, Daniel Weatherspoon, Da’ T.R.U.T.H., Bishop Paul Morton

Geez.  I just dunno.  Some of the names on there…

What do you guys think of the nominees?

Out & About (GMWA): GAG Luncheon, Donald Lawrence & More

Oh wowwwwwwww.  Yesterday was insanely busy, but soooo much fun.

The Gospel Announcer’s Guild (GAG) held its annual luncheon and showcase at the Duke Energy Center.  The event, co-hosted by David Mann, featured a BUNCH of artists with new music either available now or coming soon.  Among them– Sheri Jones-Moffett, Melinda Watts, Tamela Mann, Bishop Paul Morton, New Direction, Philip Carter, Karima Kibble

And let me say this real quick… that Bishop Paul Morton is a preaching and singin’ somebody.  I NEVER get tired of hearing him sing.  By the way, it’s his BIRTHDAY week, so there’s much celebrating going around.  In any case, he sang his new single, “Don’t Do It Without Me” (with son, PJ Morton on keys), and got the entire GAG Luncheon crowd HYPED.  I’ll do some feature stuff soon.  In the meantime, some pics are at the bottom of this post.

Donald Lawrence, Dorothy Norwood and Vashawn Mitchell were among several artists in the house to support… and a BUNCH of industry vets and execs were milling around including Jojo Pada, Neily Dickerson (The ND Co.), Torrence Glenn (BET.com), Vicki Mack-Lataillade (LillyMack/Central South/CCLI/etc.), Larry Blackwell (EMI), Mitchell Solarek (Maximum Artist), Tammy Taylor (One EnTiTy), Sheilah Belle (The Belle Report), Lisa Collins (Gospel Industry Round-Up), Kia Jarmon (Light Records) and soooo many more.

I tried to take a quick nap, but I didn’t quite make it.  My wife and I were invited to an intimate little dinner celebrating the release of Melinda Watts’ debut project, People Get Ready.  Special shout-out to her incredible team, with whom my wife and I have kinda fallen in love!

No rest for the weary… I had about 45 minutes to freshen up for the highly anticipated Donald Lawrence concert, sponsored in part by Verizon Wireless & How Sweet The Sound.

IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!  Maaaaan… he’s like… becoming one of my absolute faves.  He and his singers ministered with songs from his latest project, The Law Of Confession Part 1, including the title track, “Let The Word Do The Work,” “The Blessing Is On You,” and the hit single “Back II Eden.”  He also dipped back a bit and performed “Healed,” “Giants,” ”The Blessing Of Abraham,” and brought Sheri Jones-Moffett to the stage to take us STRAIGHT in on “Encourage Yourself.”  It was better than I could ever recap.  GEEZ.

Sheri also performed her rising single, “Renewed,” from her debut solo album of the same name, due on August 11th.  Such a sweet spirit (and her family is THE BEST).

The whole shebang ended at about 2am and I was knocked OUT shortly thereafter.  Where’s my coffee?!

More recaps later!

In The News: PJ Morton Releases New Book

If you’ve visited this site for more than a week, you’ve probably seen some discussion about gospel music and secular music, and the interplay of the two… it’s a highly debated topic in the Body of Christ, and kinda has been since gospel music began in the early 20th century.

So, I’m eager to hear what Grammy, Dove and Stellar Award-winning writer and producer, PJ Morton, has to say about the topic in his debut book, Why Can’t I Sing About Love?  The Truth About the “Church” Against “Secular” Music.

As the son of Bishop Paul Morton, PJ Morton has often come under fire for his “secular” music leanings and work (though, I’ve always kinda thought of him as a gap-bridger, cuz he writes some great love songs!).

According to his press release, Why Can’t I Sing About Love? deals with the “age-old argument of sacred vs. non-sacred music.”  PJ Morton explains that many of the doctrines to which we are adhering were man-made and not Biblically based.  Finding fuel in Song of Solomon, Morton highlights “the love God says a man should have for his wife.”

The book will be released on August 11, 2009, but you can get an advance copy NOW at www.whycantisingaboutlove.com.

Sounds interesting, no?  Talk to me.

On TV: CeCe Winans on TBN Last Night

Did you all catch CeCe Winans hosting TBN’s Praise The Lord last night?!  WHEWWW!  Good show.

The performances were, of course, awesome.  Smokie Norful did some tracks from his latest album and did a great job.  When he opened the show, the sound folks didn’t have things together, so he and his singers were a bit out of sync with the track (arrgghhh), but they got it together.

BeBe Winans joined his sister to sing their new single, “Close To You,” and I’m growing more anxious for the tour each time I see them!  I’m cheesin’ even as I type this cuz it’s just soooo nostalgic.  And, by the way, BeBe is like… hilarious.  I loved their conversation.

Bishop Paul Morton also did a great job with “Cry Your Last Tear,” which he sang at Pop Winans’ homegoing service.  He was cuttin’ up on stage, too, on his interview.  I like him.

I think my fave part of the show, though, was to see Alvin Love, CeCe’s husband, talking about his role as husband and covering for a woman of God with such a great call on her life.  I always see him, but haven’t heard him as much, so it was great to get his perspective.  He said to CeCe: ”I understand your purpose, I understand what God has called you to do, and so I’m not intimidated by that… I do know who I am.  I’m a child of God and God has placed me here to be a covering for you.”

And what’s crazier, he later said “I got saved two years before I met you… I didn’t know anything about holiness.  I was straight from the world, and then… CeCe Winans!”

BOOM!  They’ll be married 25 years next month and you can tell that they’re still absolutely in love with one another.  Great stuff!  Prayin’ for y’all…

If you missed it last night, click here to catch it streaming from TBN’s website, in the Archives section.  It should be the first-listed episode.

What did you all think???
