In With The New: Micah Smith

Mia Paylor offers her latest installment of her popular In With The New series!

Micah Smith - All of My Heart (March 2012)
Website: http://www.singmicah.com
Must-Have Tracks: “Make A Way”, “Give Thanks”, “Against the Wall”, “Early”, “Walk By Faith”, “Back to You”, “No More”, “Never Gonna Let You Go”, “With You”

All of My Heart is for the music lovers. I’m not talking about the kind of music lover that just likes to casually listen to hot music. We all want to hear hot music. I’m talking about the kind who can’t listen to music without making faces, playing your air guitar, singing instrumental solos, and hollering at the radio when you hear a tight lick or harmony. I’m talking about the music lover who really appreciates fine musical instrumentation and precision. I’m talking about the music lover who wants it churchy, jazzy, soulful, funky, and gritty…and done with real instruments. All of My Heart is for YOU.

“Make A Way” is a sophisticated, cool approach to a quartet feel. “Give Thanks” (one of my all-time favorite church songs) gets a spiffy facelift. This. Song. Moves. Latin-jazz, y’all. The only thing missing was Sheila E.!

Do you remember the game show, The Price Is Right? Well, “Against the Wall” uses its theme song as a big band backdrop. And, while both “Early” and “Walk By Faith” have a neo-soul vibe, “Walk By Faith” shows Micah Smith straying from his straight-forward and precise tenor vocals to play around with his falsetto range. Imagine what D’Angelo might do on a smoothed out, mid-tempo track. That’s just what Micah’s doing here…and quite well.

“No More” is a mid-tempo mixture of soft rock and pop with great lyrics and a strong declaration that we should turn away from the sin that so easily besets us. “Never Gonna Let You Go” is a moving, gospel-tinged ballad with the most pleasantly unexpected ear candy happening behind the vocals. “With You” rocks out with the best B-section in the entire collection.

Although a few of the songs did seem a bit repetitious after a while, overall, I believe All of My Heart is a very strong solo introduction.

Micah Smith, a native of Baltimore, Maryland and a Morgan State University alumnus, is a singer, songwriter, composer, and musician. He’s shared the stage with many well-known artists ranging from Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, and Karen Clark-Sheard to Roberta Flack, Kenny Lattimore, Wynton Marsalis and more. Micah is also a member of the illustrious Soulful Symphony (headed by Darin Atwater…check them out) and a background singer for recording artist, Jason Nelson.

All of My Heart gets my stamp of approval, folks. Download this one today!

Kim Burrell To Record Whitney Houston Commemorative Album

Word has it that Kim Burrell will record a Whitney Houston tribute album, to be produced by Luther “Mano” Hanes (think of Andraé Crouch’s latest project, The Journey) and released on Hanes’ label, Riverphlo.

No word yet on a release date, but check out the official video announcement from Kim Burrell’s manager, Krishnar Lewis, below:

I’m looking forward to it!

Dove Awards Performers To Include Donnie McClurkin, Lecrae & Kim Burrell

In its second year heading from Nashville to Atlanta, it’s good to again see that the GMA Dove Awards is continuing in its mission to increase its inclusion of a broad spectrum of genres and groups, both as nominees and presenters/performers.

In short– it’s good to see “us” well-represented at the Doves again.

Now, I watch each year anyway because I love it all, but I know that some of you may not tune-in as readily…

So, if you’re hoping for a bit of “familiarity,” make sure you attend the show or watch from home– you can expect to see performances from Donnie McClurkin, Kim Burrell, Ruben Studdard, and Lecrae. Also on the bill will be Natalie Grant, Mandisa, Jason Crabb, Jamie Grace, Danny Gokey, Jason Castro and The Isaacs. All great singers and artists. It’s gonna be a good show!

Plus, the hilarious David Mann will be co-hosting with funnylady Chonda Pierce.

The show takes place on April 19th in Atlanta, at the Fox Theatre. Grab tickets here.

If you can’t make the show, be sure to tune-in when it airs exclusively on gmc, on April 24th at 8pm ET.

James Fortune Shows Next-Generation Promise With ‘Identity’ (Full Album Review)

James Fortune has made quite a name for himself over the past several years. With significant radio airplay and increased television appearances, he’s risen from “just another ensemble frontman” to one of the leading artists of the next generation in gospel music.

With his new project, Identity, James Fortune further solidifies his position and offers one of his best projects to date.

Backed by his group, FIYA, James Fortune presents a high-energy, but often heartfelt, collection of music that will appeal to a broad audience.

What stands out most for me on this 18-track album is the songwriting and lead vocals. Not only does Fortune feature numerous industry peers, from Fred Hammond and Kim Burrell to Le’Andria Johnson and Monica, he does so on songs with heightened musicality and authenticity. To be sure, some of the tunes follow a formula, but the bulk of the project is by far more experimental (and successfully so) than his previous work.

Stand-out cuts include the piano-guided title track, “Identity,” the churchy banger “Could Be Worse” (featuring Le’Andria Johnson and Zacardi Cortez on lead) and “What If,” a true-to-the-Gospel tune set to an absolutely beautiful melody. Pay special attention to “Curse Is Broken,” “Make A Sound,” featuring the incomparable vocal acrobatics of Nikki Ross, and the passionate “With You,” led by Kim Burrell.

My personal favorite on the album, however, is “Hold On,” an old school soul-vibed song of encouragement featuring awesome vocals from Monica and Fred Hammond. It’s just one of those feel-good tunes that doesn’t get old for me.

For fans of James Fortune & FIYA, this project will take your “fanship” to the next level. For naysayers or skeptics, take an open listen to it– you will be thoroughly impressed. If the rest of the new releases in 2012 follow James Fortune’s lead, we’ll be in pretty good musical hands.
