The long-awaited sophomore project from Syreeta Thompson, dubbed “The Trumpet Lady,” is in stores TODAY.  The album, In His Presence, features guest vocals from Dorinda Clark Cole and DeWayne Woods.

Having studying under Wynton Marsalis, Syreeta has toured with Beyonce and Lauryn Hill, but the gospel industry probably knows her best as a vital component of Hezekiah Walker and Love Fellowship’s band.

In His Presence is said to be a solid blend of gospel and jazz and, while it is largely instrumental, Syreeta sings on a few tracks as well.

It feels kinda funny referring to Hezekiah Walker’s Live in London as “throwback,” but it was released in 1997, which was 13 years ago… that’s kinda throwback at this point.

In any case, this is one of my favorite cuts from that project– it’s “To Be Like Jesus” featuring LaWonda Campbell.  Pretty sure I featured this video before, but it got so good to me this morning, I figured “why not?!”

Is it just me, or is the music that Hezekiah Walker & Love Fellowship puts out kinda like… unparalleled in contemporary choir music?

When you survey all the hits over the past decades, I can’t think of any choir with as much GREAT music.  I can listen to EVERY song on EVERY album and be completely content… no, GIDDY about how good it is.

I think you’re my fave, Hezekiah Walker.

Life In the Word, the first project in the joint venture between Fred Hammond’s fHammond Family Entertainment and Universal Christian Music Group has debuted at #2 on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart. Fred’s 2009 release, Love Unstoppable, came in at #6 this week, so he’s got TWO albums in the Top 10.  Congrats!

For a second week, it seems that an artist has debuted in the top 10 of Billboard’s Gospel Albums charts that many probably were not expecting to land there.

This time, it’s the project Landmark, a new album from Jasper Williams & Salem Bible Church Mass Choir, which debuted at #6.  This traditional gospel project was given a solid rating by The Black Gospel Blog (one of my faves for its historical accuracy and broad coverage).

Since his debut at #8 last week, gospel hip-hopper PRo has dropped to #22.  I’d probably blame that on a bunch of pre-sales, as well, without momentum beyond first week.  Either way, you guys have said good things about him… I think folks should check him out.
