Word Has It: The Lexi Show Is Gonna Be HOTTT!

WOWWWWW.  I saw these trailers last night and my mouth DROPPED.

Lexi is known as an incredibly gifted vocalist and, lately, we’ve seen that she’s a talented reporter, correspondent and host of various shows.  Well, her latest endeavor, The Lexi Show, will premiere on The Word Network on September 5th… judging by these trailers, YOU DO NOT WANNA MISS IT.

She’s not holding back and she’s not playin’. LOL

Peep ‘em here (and make sure you watch them BOTH!) :

What do y’all think???

Is It Just Me: Gospel F.O.C.U.S.

Is it just me, or are you still a bit miffed that The Word Network’s Gospel F.O.C.U.S. kinda just stopped airing without any conclusion?

Like… we KNOW y’all went through the whole taping and what not.  Who won?!

Goodies: Nevels Sisters

If you don’t know about these women, you are SOUND ASLEEP and you’ve gotta WAKE UP!

In the early days of GospelPundit.com, I posted something about them in the Check ‘Em Out series.  Click here to read it.  If you recall, there was a little back and forth about similarities between them and the Clark Sisters.  Lemme tell you… aside from Tye Tribbett, I haven’t seen anyone with as much energy as these four sisters!

My wife and I first saw them singing this song, “I’ve Got Company,” on an episode of the Bobby Jones Industry Retreat (on The Word Network).  We saved it on DVR and we watch it REGULARLY.  They are some SAAAANGIN’ women… oh my!  They’ve got the stamina AND vocal endurance of… like… Beyonce.  LoL

I couldn’t find that clip, but here they are singing the same song at a church.  It’s not the full song and the sound quality is not great, but you’ll get the idea.  For your musical reference, they’re saying “I’ve got company, following me” in the background.  Listen and love it:

On TV: New Episodes of the Bobby Jones Retreat

Last night, my wife and I discovered that the Word Network is now airing episodes of the most recent Bobby Jones International Gospel Industry Retreat, which took place in mid-November of 2008.  And not a moment too soon, if you ask me.

It was both enjoyable and entertaining, as always.  A note, however, to the editing powers-that-be:  PLEASE turn down that jazzy background music when Lonnie Hunter and ‘em interview the people after they perform.  I can’t hardly hear nothing from all that saxophone tootin’.

But thanks for the new episodes!!!

Is It Just Me: Gospel F.O.C.U.S.

Is it just me, or aren’t we annoyed that The Word Network just up and stopped airing the rest of Gospel F.O.C.U.S.?

Check 'Em Out: Shari Addison

Depending on whether or not you watched much of BET‘s hit gospel talent search, Sunday Best, you may or may not have heard of Shari Addison (she was the runner-up to the winner, Crystal Aikin).  But if you haven’t yet, you soon shall…

Honestly, I had heard of her, but wasn’t really checking for her.  I planned to listen one day, but hadn’t gotten around to it.  I played myself!  LOL

Last week, my wife and I watched an episode of the Bobby Jones International Gospel Industry Retreat, airing on The Word Network, and she was a featured guest.  She was singing an old James Cleveland cut, “Please Make Me Better.”  In the interest of full disclosure, I have to tell you that I immediately thought “she’s cool, but more of the same.”  Not so!

This sister got to singin’ and shufflin’ across that stage, and I nearly LOST MY MIND.  She BRINGS IT!  And I cannot stop listening to her and watching the video clips.  I love that she praises God from the moment she hits the stage, that she’s got great vocal stamina and stage presence, that she’s mature and seasoned, that she can ad lib well, that she is committed from the first beat to the last… she’s just a refreshing addition to the industry (plus, she’s from Chicago, so you KNOW I’m partial!).

Featuring production and songwriting help from Kevin Bond, Donald Lawrence, and Percy Bady, her self-titled debut album (from Zomba Gospel) is due on January 13th.  I can’t wait to hear more from her.

Do yourself a favor and check her out: http://www.bet.com/onblast/?chan=3&id=2326&sub=3&itype=v

(Note: Click the link above for the video clip… it’s the only one I wanted to use, but it’s only available streaming directly from BET directly, so I can’t embed it.   BUT WATCH IT!)

Check 'Em Out: Nevels Sisters

So, I have to admit that I hadn’t heard much about the Nevels Sisters until I read a press release yesterday, announcing the release of their new album, Beautiful.  I thought it was a debut, but their bio indicates otherwise– they’ve been recording since 1984.  Turns out, they were the first winners of Gospel F.O.C.U.S., a nationwide gospel talent competition airing on The Word Network.  I didn’t have cable back then, so…

Anyway, a line in their bio caught my attention: “The four biological sisters are one of the hottest groups to hit Gospel in a long time.  Easily drawing strong comparisons to The Clark Sisters…”

I could see that.

But after listening to the album, produced by Tommie Walker (Fred Hammond, CeCe Winans), I believe the similarities are much more subtle than one might assume.  Sure, they’re four ladies who sing a lot in unison before breaking into unique harmonies.  But, the style of music is not Clark-esque.  They’re not really doing traditional gospel, or even modernized traditional gospel.  They’re more like an urban praise & worship– some of the songs have a sound that could easily translate to a Men of Standard, Virtue or Trinitee 5:7 album, in terms of style.

There’s no denying that these ladies are really good vocalists.  Both the lead vocals and background vocals display some great agility and even better color and tone.  I listened through snippets of each of the 17 tracks (good Lawd!), and enjoyed the song choices.  My faves: “Clap Your Hands,” a beat-laden praise & worship track kinda reminscent of the Clark Sisters’ “You Brought the Sunshine”; “Unbelievable,” just a good song of gratitude; ”I Wanna Bless You” and ”There’s Only One,” two songs that praise teams want to include in their repertoire.

All in all, I really like ‘em.  I wish I had seen or heard more about them before the day of their album’s release.  Many people probably don’t know much about them.  But if they don’t take off, that will be the reason; not because the album doesn’t deliver.

Check ‘em out!
