In With The New: Preashea Hilliard, Daniel Johnson & Utrecht Music Presents…

In this editorial review, contributing writer Mia Paylor gives snapshot reviews of three independent releases from newer artists…

Preashea Hilliard
Live Out Loud
Release Date: April 19, 2011
Must-Have Tracks: “Lift Up Your Heads”, “All For You”, “Fresh Fire”, “Redeemer (feat. CeCe Winans)”, “Oh How We Love You”, “We Want You”, “Something Happens”

Live Out Loud is a solid Praise & Worship CD released by the youngest daughter of Bishop I.V. & Lady Bridget Hilliard of New Light Christian Center Church in Houston, TX, where she serves as a Youth Pastor. It has a little bit of rock, soul, pop, and traditional gospel. Produced by Aaron Lindsey, it debuted at #4 on Billboard’s Gospel Chart.

If you’re looking for new Praise & Worship material…songs you can execute well at your church…this CD is for you. These songs were written and arranged to be ministered in churches on Sunday mornings across the globe.

Preashea has a rich alto tone. She’s an effective worship leader and exhorter. Vocally, her style is to stick to the melody and stay within her vocal range. But, we aren’t dependent upon vocal acrobatics in order to be led into worship, are we church? No? Good.

Then, give Live Out Loud a listen. ;-)

Daniel Johnson
You Make Me
Release Date: April 4, 2011
Must-Have Tracks: “You Make Me”, “What A Time”, “I’m With You”, “Beautiful”, “For My Good”, “Come Go With Me”, “All The Way”

You know him as “not Israel Houghton or Aaron Lindsey, but the other guy you hear singing leads on New Breed songs”. But, his Momma-n’em named him Daniel Johnson…and You Make Me is his new, ubersoulful gospel CD.

Daniel, a vocalist, writer, producer, arranger, and music director from Compton (LA), CA, has sung with Andrae Crouch, Chris Tomlin, and Darius Rucker, as well as Israel & New Breed. You’d think that Daniel’s solo project would be a mashup of those sounds. It’s not.

You Make Me is dripping with soul. During an interview with M.E.X Magazine, Daniel mentioned that he wanted an opportunity to sing like his father, who sang soprano and played guitar in a quartet. The result is a sound reminiscent of D’Angelo and other soul legends. And, the style matches Daniel’s voice perfectly. The falsetto, the runs, the passion… it’s all there.

You Make Me only has two or three kinda-churchy tracks. The band-ish accompaniment of the first four tracks makes them sound a bit too similar. And, some of the songs have too many conflicting musical twists within them.  But, I love everything that’s right about the CD…and I think you will too.

Utrecht Music Presents
New Artist Showcase Vol. 1
Release Date: April 1, 2011
Must-Have Tracks: “Set Free”, “We Made It”, “Sunday School (Sweetest Man I Know)”

It’s hard to recognize new talent in a music industry full of anointed and gifted artists. So, Utrecht Music, a new independent label, has released Utrecht Music Presents New Artist Showcase Vol. 1 in a one-stop, economical effort to introduce you to their roster of new artists…all from the east coast.

Jamaal Miller & Purposely Anointed delivers young, urban gospel on “Set Free” that makes me want to dance like Tye Tribbett’s old indie stuff still does. Andre Nance & Greater Praise delivers funky, traditional gospel on “We Made It” that is soo ready for Sunday Morning. Steve McCoy & Sacrifice delivers urban, CCM-styled gospel on “Sunday School (Sweetest Man I Know),” compelling you to think about just how sweet Jesus is with its simple melody, great hits, and the addition of “Sweet Jesus” at the end. Kenyon Portee’s “Isaiah 53” has a nice, soulful groove and he delivers a nice tenor lead. I enjoy the song although it loses steam toward the end. Rehoboth’s “Rejoice” couples great lyrics with a conservative, contemporary sound. It could’ve used a bit more soul, in my opinion.

[Insert "indie production" disclaimer here. :-) ] BUT, I believe that’s what’s great about this project.  It should
be enjoyed by all!  To hear more about the artists, check out www.utrechtmusic.com.

The Charts: Greater Mount Calvary Debuts At #7, LeCrae Back At #1

The choir album from DC’s Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church, titled Greater Mount Calvary Live: As Told By The Music Ministry, debuts at #7 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart this week.

Also, LeCrae is back at the #1 spot, with Flame’s Captured dropping to #4.

Here’s how the rest of the top looks…

Full review of the Greater Mount Calvary project is coming soon.  Anybody already have it?

Plus, watch the charts next week for LeCrae’s new project, Rehab: The Overdose, which dropped Tuesday. I’m thinking we’ll see him at both #1 and #2 on the chart, which will be quite a feat.

The Charts: Flame Debuts At #1

Christian hip-hop reigns atop the Billboard Gospel Albums chart, with last week’s release of rap artist Flame’s latest album, Captured. The project debuted at #1!

Not far behind him is chart mainstay Lecrae, with his Rehab project, at #2. Bear in mind, he drops his quick follow-up, Rehab: The Overdose, on January 11th.

Also, props to William McDowell for climbing to #3 with his 2009 release, As We Worship: Live! It may take a while, but look at God! :-)

Beyond that, the top 10 looks like this:

#1 | FlameCaptured
#2 | LecraeRehab
#3 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#4 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#5 | James Fortune & FIYAI Believe: Live
#6 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.

The Charts: VaShawn Mitchell’s TRIUMPHANT Climbs To #2

Powered by his hit single, “Nobody Greater,” and on the heels of receiving two GRAMMY nods, VaShawn Mitchell has soared to #2 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart this week.

Also making great sales gains this week was William McDowell, whose As We Worship: Live jumped from #7 to #3.

The rest of the Top 10 shakes out like this…

#1 | LeCraeRehab
#2 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#3 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#4 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#5 | Brooklyn Tabernacle ChoirA Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas
#6 | Tye TribbettFresh
#7 | WOW Gospel 2010
#8 | Mavis StaplesYou Are Not Alone
#9 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.
#10 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love

I think these will be the key players in the Top 10 for the rest of the year… don’t know of any new releases due before January that would trouble the waters…

But maybe VaShawn will hit #1 before the year’s out…

Whatd’ya think???

The Charts: LeCrae Maintains #1 Position In Gospel

Christian hip-hop phenom LeCrae is still at #1 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart.  He’s got some GREAT music, so if you haven’t checked it out yet– DO SO.

The full top 10 looks like this… right… here…

#1 | LeCraeRehab
#2 | Mavis StaplesYou Are Not Alone
#3 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.
#4 | Tye TribbettFresh
#5 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#6 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#7 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#8 | Brooklyn Tabernacle ChoirA Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas
#9 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love
#10 | WOW Gospel 2010

Micah Stampley’s project, which debuted at #2 last week, has fallen from the top 10, while Mavis Staples’ project jumped from #12 to #2 this week.  Everyone else has been around for some time, and should hold there for a minute…

I’ma need that Soul Seekers album to come up, though.  Y’all buy it yet???

The Charts: Micah Stampley Debuts At #3, Soul Seekers At #11

Micah Stampley’s new EP, Release Me, debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart last week.  Congrats to ya!

Also, the latest project from the Soul Seekers, Soul Seekers II, made its entrance at the #11 spot.  Kudos to you guys, as well!

The full top 10 shakes out as follows…

#1 | LeCraeRehab
#2 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.
#3 | Micah StampleyRelease Me
#4 | Brooklyn Tabernacle ChoirA Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas
#5 | Tye TribbettFresh
#6 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#7 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love
#8 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#9 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#10 | WOW Gospel 2010

Did you grab the new Micah Stampley project?  What do you think of it?

What about the Soul Seekers album?

The Charts: Aaron Neville’s Gospel Project Debuts At #10

Not much to report about Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart this week, I don’t think…

Aaron Neville’s gospel project, I Know I’ve Been Changed, debuted at #10, which I must say I kinda expected.  He’s got a great following and is practically a legend among his supporters.  Congratulations!

CoCo Brother’s Stand compilation project re-entered at #5 on the chart, too.  They just had a HUGE rally in Atlanta last week, and I’m sure venue sales accounted for much of the activity in that regard.  Still, they sold ‘em!  Congrats and welcome back! LOL

The rest of the chart looks like this…

#1 | LeCraeRehab
#2 | Tye TribbettFresh
#3 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love
#4 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.
#5 | CoCo BrotherStand 2010
#6 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#7 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#8 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#9 | Brooklyn Tabernacle ChoirA Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas
#10 | Aaron NevilleI Know I’ve Been Changed

So, that’s that… I would note that several Christmas projects have been gaining in sales, too, so don’t be shocked if the top 10 looks a lot more holiday-ish in the coming weeks.

What do you think???

The Charts: All Is Pretty Much The Same…

Not much movement to report in the top 10 of Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart, aside from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s leap from #24 to #5 with their holiday project, A Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas.

The Christmas season kinda crept up on me, but here we are!

The rest of the top 10 looks a little something like…

#1 | LeCraeRehab
#2 | Tye TribbettFresh
#3 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#4 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love
#5 | Brooklyn Tabernacle ChoirA Brooklyn Tabernacle Christmas
#6 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#7 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#8 | Mavis StaplesYou Are Not Alone
#9 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.
#10 | WOW Gospel 2010

Anyone got that Brooklyn Tab project???

The Charts: LeCrae Back At #1

LeCrae’s Rehab project shows no signs of slowing– it’s back at #1 this week on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart, having taken a backseat to Tye Tribbett’s Fresh debut last week.

Also, remember how I said that Israel’s sudden disappearance from the Billboard chart last week must have been an administrative error? It was. Apparently, Soundscan numbers reported that he was actually in the #3 position in gospel music last week, but Billboard omitted his name from the line-up.  I blame a Billboard intern. ;-)

Anyway, all’s fixed now and the top 10 looks like this in gospel:

#1 | LeCraeRehab
#2 | Tye TribbettFresh
#3 | Israel HoughtonLove God. Love People.
#4 | Brian Courtney WilsonJust Love
#5 | Marvin SappHere I Am
#6 | VaShawn MitchellTriumphant
#7 | Mavis StaplesYou Are Not Alone
#8 | William McDowellAs We Worship: Live
#9 | WOW Gospel 2010
#10 | Shekinah Glory MinistryRefreshed By Fire

Based on the numbers, I believe that the Bishop Morton compilation I told you about this week could chart pretty high in the coming week.  And Aaron Neville’s released a new gospel project this week that, like Mavis Staples’ project, will likely get significant mainstream attention.  We’ll see.

What do you guys think???
