Ya Heard?: Jonathan Nelson feat. Kierra – "There Shall Be A Performance"

If you attended the AIM Convention this year, you’ve already seen this performance… but for those of us who couldn’t make it, I’m grateful for YouTube and a user named LYRIC1973… :-)

Jonathan Nelson performed songs from his upcoming album, entitled Better Days, which will be released through Integrity Music on September 14th.  This particular video is footage of a song called “There Shall Be A Performance.” The tune is one of those catchy songs with clever and singable lyrics for which Jonathan Nelson is becoming known.

Plus, the song features Kierra Sheard, whose live performances ALWAYS remind me that she has more potential than most of us have seen. Can’t wait ’til it’s all revealed.

Anyway, I’m diggin’ it… from the verses to the vamp. I’d pump it in the car.

Word Has It: 'The Lexi Show' Searches For New Home

Booooooo!!! Sorry– just had to vent first. *clearing my throat*

Apparently, after a successful four-season run, The Word Network has canceled The Lexi Show, the hard-hitting interview program created and hosted by Lexi.

No reason for the cancellation was announced, but Lexi has expressed that she is “overwhelmed with the unbelievable number of letters, phone calls and e-mails” in support of the program.

Even better– she’s NOT giving up on the program… she hopes to have a new television home for The Lexi Show soon.

In the meantime, you can watch older episodes at her YouTube channel– http://www.youtube.com/lexitelevision.

*glares over at The Word Network* I dunno WHAT else y’all plan to put in place of her show, but I’m a benefit-of-the-doubt type of guy… let’s see what you’ve got.

What do you all think? Is this good? Bad? Gone too soon? Couldn’t have been soon enough?

Let’s hear it!

Goodies: Throwback – "I'd Rather Have Jesus"

You know the drill… bouncin’ around on YouTube, linking from one video to the next, stumbled upon a gem, figured I needed to share it for nostalgia’s sake.

PLEASE tell me you remember “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” from the Dallas Fort Worth Mass Choir. Hearing it takes me back to my college gospel choir KILLIN’ it (sidebar: funny how everybody thinks their college choir was so dope).

Anyway, their concept video for it (which I don’t recall ever seeing) is right here:

Who remembers that song?!

Goodies: Kelly Price Live

Every now and then, I find a video on YouTube and I think “when was THIS?  where was I?!”

This video of Kelly Price performing “Healing” from her debut gospel album, This Is Who I Am, is one such video.

Check it out–

Makes me want another gospel project from her… and SOON. :-(

Goodies: Lecresia Campbell With Wilmington Chester Mass

CLASSIC tune for me.

I think I first heard this over a decade ago– my high school choir was singing it and some soloist was screeching and laboring to hit notes that Lecresia Campbell sings with minimal effort.  I wasn’t impressed.

By the time I heard the actual version of the song, though, I fell in love with it (and detested the soloist who dared to try it at my school “all the more”).

Nobody can sing like Lecresia.  And there are few choirs as good as the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir.  Here’s “The Change Will Come”:

And shout-out to matthew5and9, who posted the video on YouTube.  You’ve got some GOOD music, doc!

Goodies: Marvin Winans, Donnie McClurkin & J Moss

I just love hearing Marvin Winans sing.  And this is one of those “wish-I-was-there” type of moments– it just looks like they had a GREAT sing-along type of time.

PAJAM featured this video on YouTube.  It features Marvin Winans singing Fred Hammond’s “You Are The Living Word,” before transitioning to “Stand” (for which he brings out Donnie McClurkin and J Moss).

For The Record: Voices Of Citadel – "Won't It Be Wonderful"

Yesterday, I introduced two great new writers who have joined the GospelPundit.com team.  One of ‘em, EaZy, is a choir head through and through, so his review of the latest album from James Hall’s church choir, Voices of Citadel, can be trusted to the utmost.

Without delay, here’s EaZy to tell you what he thought of James Hall Presents Voices Of CitadelWon’t It Be Wonderful.

*     *     *

Some may argue that good choir music is a thing of the past.  However, those same Gospel music lovers who’ve been looking for churchy material will be excited about the release of James Hall presents the Voices of Citadel Won’t It Be WonderfulVOC is the church choir of Brooklyn’s Citadel of Praise & Worship, where Dr. Kevin Bond is Pastor.  This is their second release on James Hall’s Musicblend Records.

Although the album is “presented” by James Hall, it’s churchier than anything that Worship and Praise has done.  It still has the signature mysterious, gothic sound most of us have learned to expect and love from Hall without being dark or depressing.  What is most noteworthy about this project is that the sound is TREMENDOUSLY better than the last Voices of Citadel CD…as well as Worship and Praise’s Live at Foxwoods.

The album opens up with the upbeat first single, Butch Heyward’s “Hallelujah to the Lamb” and “Count On Me,” then goes into the more traditional sounding “I’ve Learned To Trust” with Deborah Pritchard Stevenson on lead vocals, reminiscent of “God Wants A Yes.”

Dr. Bond and his vocabulary (does anyone else break into a wide-mouthed grin whenever he speaks?) introduce “Release Your Power” which is more of a praise and worship/reflective song that clocks in at an exhausting 8:33.  The album then goes into what I feel are the two highlights of the entire project– “Saved” a bouncy, throwback to the mid-late nineties era with a beat that may be more Friday Night musical than Sunday morning service (that’s a good thing).

“Living to Live Again” is probably my favorite song on the album.  It starts out somewhat laid-back but turns into something wonderful once the alto lead takes over.  Next, Professor Hall gives us an “avant garde” intro to “How Great Thou Art” the way that only he can.  You either love it or you hate it.

The title track “Won’t It Be Wonderful” is a fast-paced, hand-clapping number that starts off sounding a bit “showtune-ish” but ends with a repetitive, classic church vamp.  Once again, James Hall provides an interesting lead… energetic, but feels like a bit much by the end.  If you’ve been anywhere near YouTube recently, then you’ve already seen the equally energetic performances.

The album ends with what is unfortunately the low point – a remake of the Tommies’ “Jesus, I Won’t Forget.”  It’s labeled as a bonus track but feels more like an afterthought.  It’s over-synthesized, over-produced and just out of place.  I could have done without it.

As a Chicago native, I love warbling vibrato as much as anyone else.  While VOC’s (at times) excessive vibrato sounds good, it is often very difficult to understand the lyrics.  I also asked myself, does this album seem pretty long with an overwhelming fourteen tracks, or is it that we’ve become accustomed to having only nine to ten tracks on an album?

Simple lyrics and modulation should make these songs easily accessible for brave Sunday morning church choirs.  Won’t It Be Wonderful definitely has its strengths, along with a few weaknesses.  Considering the lack of available choir music recently, I believe it to be a good investment.

If THAT ain’t a thorough evaluation, I don’t know what is!

Folks, PLEASE thank EaZy for that write-up.

And, lemme know what you think of it– if you have the album, do you agree?  If you don’t have the album, are you thinking of picking it up now?

Talk to me!

Goodies: Yolanda Adams Covers "Expect A Miracle"

I could’ve sworn that I had posted this a long time ago.  It’s definitely been one of my favorite YouTube videos for YEARS now… *shrugs* oh well.

You’re gettin’ it now!

This is Yolanda Adams singing the classic tune “Expect A Miracle,” in tribute to the Clark Sisters a few years ago.  With a little audience participation, Yolanda soars over this performance… she is in great voice and does some bananas ad libs.
