The Charts: Marvin Sapp Makes History
by EJ on Mar.25, 2010 at 9:08 am, under Industry
As I announced yesterday, Marvin Sapp’s newest album, Here I Am, debuted at #1 on the Gospel Albums, Christian Albums and the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts at Billboard. He has also landed at #2 on the Billboard 200, making his album the #2 selling album in the country, across all genres.
To give you a greater understanding of how significant his sales are, you should know that this is the first time, in Billboard history, that a gospel album has debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. You should also know that his debut represents the highest first-week sales in gospel since Kirk Franklin’s God’s Property album in 1997. AND, you should know that he had the highest digital sales ever for a new gospel release. It’s monumental.
Got it? Good!
Okay, the other players in the top 5 look like they did last week, just bumped down one position. WOW Gospel 2010 is #2, BeBe & CeCe Winans are #3, James Fortune & FIYA are #4 and Tamela Mann rests at #5.
Not to be overlooked is the 3rd chapter of Kirk Whalum’s The Gospel According to Jazz, which debuted at #12.
Thoughts on the charts, folks???

IM NOT REALLY A BIG MARVIN SAPP FAN.JUST A FAN.I REALLY LIKE ALL OF THE HITS HE HAS.ON THAT ALONE I THINK HE ONE OF THE BEST MALE VOCALIST SECOND ONLY TO FRED HAMMOND OF COURSE.BUT FOR HIM TO MAKE HISTORY IS NOT SUPRISING AT ALL WERE TALKING ABOUT A MEMEBER FROM ONE OF THEE BIGGEST R+B AND CHRISTIAN GROUPS OF ALL TIME COMMISSIONED.
AND ALL HIS EARLY HITS LIKE THE DRU HILL INSPIRED GRACE AND MERCY.I BELEIVE IT WAS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE WORLD GOT A WIFF.OF WHO HE WAS.
THAT SAID I BELEIVE HIS HISTORY SETTING.ALBUM IS ONE OF THOSE MOMENTS THE BODY OF CHRIST SHOULD CHERISH FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES.IT GOOD PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD.IT SHOW THAT OYU DONT HAVE TO COMPROMISE YOUR WALK WITH GOD TO MAKE GOOD MUSIC THE WORLD WANTS TO HEAR.AND THAT GOD WILL AND CAN ELEVATE YOU IF YOU STAY FAITHFULL.
PRAISE GOD FOR THIS BREAKTHROUGH.MAY GOD CONTUINE TO BLESS MARVIN AND HIS FAMILY.
HE IS PROOF POSTIVE THAT THE BLESSING OF THE LORD MAKETH ONE RICH AND ADDETH NO SORROW.
CAN I GET AN AMEN!!!

So proud of Marvin, he just had a mini concert and cd signing at J&R music here in New York so glad I was able to make it. He hit some Kim Burrell riffs and runs and some Clark Sisters squals and growls. He’s been my favorite male vocalist since I first heard his Diary of a Psalmist, then I had to go back to his Commissioned days. His range is out of this world and not really shown on his recordings. He did 5 songs: I Came, Fresh Wind, Wait, Best in Me, and ministered Never Would Have Made..turned the record store into a worship service. All his success is deserved, and just like with Ledisi and Kim Burrell (following BET Honors) the world is late!
