Word Has It: BET Awards To Feature LOTS Of Gospel Artists
by EJ on Jun.24, 2010 at 11:30 am, under Word Has It
Word has it that the BET Awards will feature a handful of gospel artists that I’m pretty sure you folks will enjoy…
Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell, Fred Hammond and Karen Clark Sheard have been announced as performers on this year’s annual awards broadcast, which will air LIVE this Sunday, June 27th at 8pm ET/7pm CST on BET.
Who WASN’T tuning in before, but WILL BE now?!

June 24th, 2010 on 4:36 pm
I wouldn't go as far as cussing about it, but I agree with you more or less.
June 24th, 2010 on 4:37 pm
I haven't tuned into the BET Awards every year but I'm pretty sure Fred, Karen Clark, & Kim Burrell have never been performers.
June 24th, 2010 on 11:39 am
The BET Awards are too GHETTO we always talk about how the media portray us we are the media! Why not have Y’Anna Crawley and Le’Andria Johnson? They are the networks newest gospel artists. BET sucks ***EDITED FOR VULGARITY***
June 24th, 2010 on 11:40 am
LMBO @ EJ's ever watchful eye. Let's do a few "woosaa's" and smooth down those ruffled feathers! It's too tense in here…
I'll be watching. Not only to see this but because I'm sure I'll get some good laughs as well! Y'alls cousins are funny…
June 24th, 2010 on 4:45 pm
Kim hasnt but she is nothing but a bunch of rifts and runs.
June 24th, 2010 on 11:46 am
Wow I understand the hurt everyone but wow.
Now I do agree we see these same people every year. I’m quite sure they’re tired of singing all the time.
I would’ve love to see the Suday Best crew, Kiki Sheard, Mali Music (sooooo slept on) just someone new. Please give these new artist a chance!
June 24th, 2010 on 11:46 am
BeBe & CeCe make me sick. :/
It’s gon be some medley with all of them or they gonna be in the Michael tribute.
June 24th, 2010 on 4:49 pm
Who? For BET's "Celebration of Gospel" and "Bobby Jones", yes. For BET Awards, no. People hardly know them. They are no draw ANYWHERE yet. They already don't have many gospel artists represented for that reason & the ones they pick at least have some kind of "fame" and influence even to secular artists that listen to these artists.
June 24th, 2010 on 4:51 pm
Have no draw are you kidding me?! Everyone knows who they are and if BET was smart they would promote their own. Because of Sunday Best Y'Anna and Le'Andria are household names. Do a poll and ask people who Kim Burrell is…many wouldn't know.
June 24th, 2010 on 5:15 pm
Ha! The ONLY reason I was gonna watch is because of the Prince Lifetime Achievement Award! Yep, I said it!
And I'll say this too, unapologetically: it will be VERY TRIFLING if these gospel artists "perform" to a track versus a live band.
June 24th, 2010 on 5:20 pm
With all due respect, you've got be joking right now. Is this sarcasm? Do you think America is tuning in like they do with American Idol? No! This is "Sunday's Best", the ratings are nothing. Y'Anna & LeAndria are "household" names? Maybe inside the houses of their member's home churches. Yes. The rest of America, most certainly not.
June 24th, 2010 on 12:20 pm
why is everyone cursing lol is it that serious?? lol
every year bet features only ONE gospel artist
and its usually the artist who wins the gospel artist award.
IM SOOOO excited that they are featuring a plethora
of gospel artist this year its actually making me interested in watching
they are prolly singing kirk franklins haiti song
which i love so im good..it will bring MUCH needed
claSS to the BET awards so im watching…
June 24th, 2010 on 5:22 pm
well I heard while it's been great that all of them are performing … they are ALL in the same performance segment!
June 24th, 2010 on 5:24 pm
Who said anything about BeBe and CeCe?
June 24th, 2010 on 12:26 pm
i agree with keisha m. yuh we watched sundaybest
but i can guarantee that some of my friends who are casual
gospel listeners have no idea who yanna crawley is
but i do aggree that bet shud promote thier new winner like have her present
or sumthing
June 24th, 2010 on 5:32 pm
ESPECIALLY THAT, TAM TAM! Yep, I co-signed. I'm mad that didn't pop into my mind first, lol.
When they did the Chaka Khan tribute on some BET show a while back and Prince played in the band, I. WAS. DONE. I was observing my writing mentor's studio session and everything STOPPED once that came on TV. Phones were ringing…"You watching?" I was so MAD when it got pushed off the DVR. If Prince doesn't perform at the end of the tribute, I'll cry. I'll literally cry. LMBO… I'm not kidding. I'll cry.
June 24th, 2010 on 5:32 pm
You can't be serious mam. You should post on topics that you know more information on. The are not only household names to "church folk" but those who don't go as well. Do your homework. You're not talking to a rookie.
June 24th, 2010 on 5:41 pm
Well according to to a Tweet by Fred, they are singing Kirk Franklin's "Anybody out There Listening". *blank stare* Ain't no whoopin' and hollerin' to that song.
With that being said, I too am looking forward to the Tribute to Prince. **Purple Rain, Purple Rain…**
June 24th, 2010 on 5:41 pm
You know it, Mia_v4c!
"When they did the Chaka Khan tribute on some BET show a while back and Prince played in the band, I. WAS. DONE. I was observing my writing mentor's studio session and everything STOPPED once that came on TV."
Don't you just love moments like this? When you witness a major musical moment that cannot be denied! I mean, when was the last time this has happened? Not just with Prince, but any such moment with a major music artist, esp. in gospel music?
I remember when Prince was the musical guest on a NAACP Image Awards a few years ago… or when he was a surprise guest on American Idol what, a couple of years ago?
I wonder if there's anybody in gospel who can deliver those kinds of moments? Oh yeah, there's one: Israel Houghton!
June 24th, 2010 on 5:46 pm
I'm looking forward to their performances. I hope they do have a live band and that it is done in excellence. But that's what I expect for the entire show.
June 24th, 2010 on 5:49 pm
Respectfully, I don't have cable TV so the ONLY reason I know who Y'Anna and LeAndria are is mainly because of gospelpundit.com. So household names? That's a bit generous.
It would make sense for the BET to cross-promote their shows by featuring them on the BET Awards, but that would be too much like right and we know that BET is incapable of anything that makes sense so…. lower the expectations….
June 24th, 2010 on 5:51 pm
EJ is getting ready to take the oil out. *Cussin' saints* huh?
June 24th, 2010 on 6:00 pm
This will be interesting nevertheless….I'm usually entertained pretty good during this show (being funny).
I can't wait to see the gospel artists performance. (((I can't wait to see Prince too)))…I just hope I can last that long thru this show….these two sets probably won't be until the end of the show. The beginning and end are usually worth watching if anything.
June 24th, 2010 on 6:05 pm
tam tam i like how you worded that
June 24th, 2010 on 6:10 pm
Oh I SO remember when Prince was on AI. My Mom and I acted like little school girls! We were so scured we'd miss something that we watched the whole thing on the 15" TV in the kitchen instead of running to the family room, lol…sad.
The last moment like that I remember vividly was Kelly Price on the Celebration of Gospel singing "For Every Mountain". I remember talking about that for weeks.
What are some others, folks?
June 24th, 2010 on 6:14 pm
Kim Burrell singing "I Believe in You and Me" to Whitney Houston @ BET Honors….
June 24th, 2010 on 6:21 pm
I keep saying the same thing too, IT'S THE SAME DARN PEOPLE FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, I'm sick of it!
June 24th, 2010 on 6:22 pm
LMBO! No joke…I imagined that when EJ saw it, he went into super-hero mode with a cape, a samurai sword AND anointing oil!
June 24th, 2010 on 6:27 pm
I will be watching just so I will know what everyone is talking about on monday. Last year was a bunch of Foolwang. But I am looking forward to queen Latifah hosting and the Prince Tribute. Prince is the man. Whoever sings Purple Rain (if it isnt prince himself) better put they foot in it. No joke.
And I love me some Fred Hammond so I want to see him.
But the BET awards has been a hot wretched mess for years now. But for entertainment purposes only, I will tune in. But for all those that want a good dose of the holy-ghost, the BET awards might not be your forte. Might be a little much for some of yall hollier than thou folks. Better wait for a celebration of gospel re-run.
June 24th, 2010 on 6:32 pm
Even though I agree with you as far as America knowing them, the Sunday Best winners are probably known among BET's audience. I'm just saying…
June 24th, 2010 on 6:33 pm
Well, get ready to be hurt, Tam. It costs to bring bands…and BET is quite cheap. Just be thankful our artists are getting some play in that arena.
June 24th, 2010 on 6:44 pm
You're probably right, Miko. But I'm just saying: Prince never sang to a track!!!! LOL!!!!
But seriously, that's just not right. There was a recent conference at a convention and it cost like $20 to get into the concert and each of the headliners sang to their CD tracks! I mean, that just ain't right.
There should be some kind of disclaimer on concert tickets/flyers announcing that that no live band is on the show; tracks only because that's RIDICULOUS to PAY for a concert only to hear the artist sing over a TRACK! I could do that myself at home on karaoke!
June 24th, 2010 on 6:59 pm
That comment about gospelpundit.com is clearing things up a bit=) …as always! I hardly ever watch cable TV. There are quite a few cds I would have missed out on IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR THE Pundit Player on my side…….drums, please! LOL
June 24th, 2010 on 7:04 pm
I'll take the good and leave the bad…..It's BET folks, what do you expect. I read where Prince has put together his band for his tribute so I am looking forward to this musical genius receiving a well-deserved honor.
June 24th, 2010 on 7:46 pm
Tarralyn Ramsey would add an interesting twist. Her voice is so rich and strong, you can not ignore pipes like that!!!!! Some voices are so powerful that they stir your soul- a different style just adds to the appeal. It is so interesting that other music channels can just easily introduce an artist with some kind of disturbing uproar. For instance, one new secular artist in now is showing up everywhere in garb and gook. People are just eating it up. She is all over Twitter. Can she sing?…… NO! It is just the way it is right now. Tell us how you REALLY feel. If everyone just comes on the blog in frustration without the details, the "gospel" platform is tarnished. It is no longer good news. ____Perhaps BET's ongoing repeats take away from progression or invitation and appeal to youth? I understand. I am also a fan of Kierra Sheard. Now would be a wonderful time for them to highlight her ability to present in so many different styles of music along with her performance in a movie. That one scene in "Preacher's Kid" when she gives a sneak peek of genuine vocal skills..well that was just awesome. Young ladies need to see more talent like that.
June 24th, 2010 on 8:18 pm
Not quite the same peopel, Karen Clark Sheard has never been on this show before and I am very thrilled about that!!!!
June 24th, 2010 on 9:01 pm
im excited for Kim Burrell & Karen Clark-Sheard because they are my favorite singers !! and they always bring the house down.. I'm also tuning in to see what everyone is wearing.. I'm afraid for Karen because she wears some outlandish attire sometimes (as does Vickie Winans) but I know that T.A.P.S. (The Annointed Pace Sisters) along w/ Tamela Mann are gone represent w/ their attire (assuming that they will be there) !! lol. and I wanna see how Kim steps out w/ her slimmer frame.. thats it..
June 24th, 2010 on 4:32 pm
Yawn! The same people every ***EDITED FOR PROFANITY*** year. I wanna see Kierra Sheard, Tarralyn Ramsey, Smokie Norful, etc etc.
June 24th, 2010 on 9:40 pm
Why is everybody so excited about Prince hes too satanic, let me refresh your memory when michael jackson said if i don't write it down he'll [meaning the devil] give it to Prince. But i am excited about all those gospel artists being on the bet awards this year.
June 24th, 2010 on 9:55 pm
Did you read what you wrote out loud? Just because MJ said what he said makes Prince satanic? But I digress….
It is sad that I'm more excited to see an innovative musical artist over some of these gospel music artists who make choices to produce manufactured music for the masses versus what Prince is best known for (as poorly acted but still decently portrayed in the prince pic "Purple Rain"): doing his own music his own way.
June 24th, 2010 on 10:14 pm
Yes, i am a crazy BeBe&CeCe fan and I STILL don't understand why they were NOT nominated (and i will let that one rest), nor why they are NOT featured on the show…but maybe they were asked, and couldnt not becuz of schedule…who knows? Love Kirk, but please don't do the Haiti song…what else you got? And I know with the supererogation of gospel artists that will be featured, i knew that there would only be a 4 minute gospel part of the show…BET Awards aint tryin' to give gospel no more than a lil' time,…like they are doing us a favor to pacify us for a few minutes…they have to fill the show with profanity and bleeping and hotmessness!!
June 24th, 2010 on 10:20 pm
Also, as with all award shows, my Facebook friends and I have a virtual FB party and make comments/observations in our status … We laugh, cut-up, critique, and etc….I always warn my non-participating FB friends to take me off their NEWSFEED if they are annoyed by my continuous comments…but this should be an interesting show…and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE…ALL WINNERS THAT COME TO THE STAGE…if you can't perform your vulgar song in church, please dont thank your LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST who is the head of your life!! That just cracks me up!!!
June 24th, 2010 on 7:01 pm
It certainly looks like its Kim Burrell’s time! So proud of her!
June 25th, 2010 on 12:20 am
What r u talking about??? I dont think he said anything about them….
June 25th, 2010 on 12:23 am
I was gonna watch it anyway.
June 24th, 2010 on 8:01 pm
Don’t y-all know that Prince is a JW just like Michael?’
June 25th, 2010 on 2:35 am
I am not surprised because judging by the commercials, they had thousands of gospel artists featured. I am surprised that many of them are performing but I do have my doubts. I am very happy that Karen is performing, she is my favorite singer, this must be a first for her. Okay the only thing that I am concerned about is the secular stage. Now I know that Jesus says to go ye in the world and preach the gospel to every creature. However I really hope that those gospel artists remain the light and not try to devoid the message of Jesus Christ.
We are called to walk in the light as Jesus is the light. I do have to wonder if there is a sudden agenda in this whole thing? Are they now respecting gospel artists or not? I am just baffled, but nevertheless I will not judge until I know the reason why the sudden hype about gospel singers performing at the BET awards.
June 25th, 2010 on 6:18 am
Lol, they irritating me with this promotion. Its like they just said forget "Still". I don't know the last time I've seen them on a mainstream award show together. Yea CeCe, but I'm talking as a duo. This woulda been major exposure for them. Their manager should have been on this one.
June 25th, 2010 on 2:51 pm
I'm only watching it to see the one and only, Karen Clark Sheard. I just wished it was solo performances instead of being grouped together to perform the Haiti song.
June 26th, 2010 on 1:34 am
I'll be watching…to see PRINCE & others, but mostly Prince…can't wait for that!
I'm actually not very interested in the "gospel artist" performance. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the fact that they are featured, that's a great thing. But with that particular "number" of them, it's obvious that they're all going to be in ONE HUGE segment, singing the most obvious song(s), and getting a very underrated/overlooked portion on the show. BET has always done that every year with every gospel musician.
But that's just me. I'm sure many people are supernaturally excited about it.
June 26th, 2010 on 1:51 am
In my thought to your comment,
"only thing that I am concerned about is the secular stage…However I really hope that those gospel artists remain the light and not try to devoid the message of Jesus Christ."
I like the point you made with that statement. I actually don't have a strong attraction to the "gospel line up" for the show, but like you said about them "remaining in the light". That is what matters to me most, that the artists maintain their integrity of ministry in music while on it. I pray they use the limited time to an advantage.
"I do have to wonder if there is a sudden agenda in this whole thing? Are they now respecting gospel artists or not?"
I don't think that there's a "certain motive" or agenda behind them being on the show. It has always seen a gospel performance since the first year, as well as the category recognizing them. And you can't forget about the other ways that BET shows support/recognition toward the gospel community…but like I said before, as long as they remain true to the calling, it's all fine with me. I'll be watching Sunday
June 26th, 2010 on 3:31 pm
Thanks I agree, that is all I want to see. I don`t really have a problem with gospel artist(s) performing, I just want them to be the light to the world.
Yea you are right they do tend to have a gospel artist on the BET stage, I was just wondering.
June 27th, 2010 on 10:05 am
Will not be watching, after Bob Johnson sold BET it just went downhill from there. And the award show is just one big joke.
June 28th, 2010 on 3:00 pm
It is just absurd to hear secular artists send Kudos to God for presenting vulgar music. That's like thanking God for letting you choose to do wrong- absolutely contradicting and inappropriate, simply ridiculous. However, people have different perspectives and interpretations of Jesus. I am not saying that is right. It is actually very sad because the bible tells you what to think about and what subjects should be used for meditation and music. Pray for their lack of understanding.

I love fred hammond new project unstoppable love i have been following him for a very long time when he was with commission and i get so much from the songs that he writes they really lift my soul heart is truly bless by fred song take my hand, its like the lord told him to write that for me.Im feeling that song in my heart word by word to end because i know my breakthrough is on the way,my change is on the way
